referees get a lot of discretion though. they get to decide. it's literally written in the rule book for the NHL that referees are allowed to make the call how they see it within the general boundaries set up.
As far as his hit on Downey being dirty or knee on knee I have no idea what people are smoking. I guess to some perception is reality. No matter how vivid your imagination is that hit was not even close to being dirty or knee on knee. People need to stop just making stuff up every time Ovie gets within a few inches of anyone. Having said that no one with a functioning brain can say now that Ovie is not willing to drop the gloves. He was absolutely ready to go and even took his helmet off during both altercations. Ovechkin can be allowed to fight---against someone who is an established leader in the league (i.e., a Jarome Iginla), where it would be equals fighting - captain versus captain. But Ovechkin fighting the league's punk? Are you kidding me?
Sean Avery may be a pest, but Steve Downie is many rungs below that.

Downie plays first line quite often, he may have came into the league as a bit of a nut job, but he's developed into quite the player. either way, all players are on the ice and all players are equal to fight, it doesn't matter if your the top goal scorer fighting the shittiest player in the league, your all players and you all have to fight if it comes down to it.
Ovechkin is no different, All the top stars in the league drop them from time to time, are all their fights with other stars? no

To codymo32791---it's not that Ovechkin can't do his own dirty work, it's that Caps management doesn't want him fighting because if he's hurt in a fight, especially against a punk like Steve Downie, that hurts their ticket sales and the team's offense.
An exception could be made if Ovechkin were fighting say, a Lecavalier or an Iginla (leader against leader). But Downie is a punk.

They played well when OV was hurt and suspended, I think they were 6-2.
Semin is good but they got alot of depth too like Knuble, Backstrom, Morrison and Fleishmann, and Fehr is a decent player.

Whether or not Ovechkin can hold his own in a fight is a moot point. You don't let you're superstar fight some random goon. never. The result of getting taken off the ice for 5, or worse injury is just not worth it.
Matt Bradley was a clean planned line change; it was just an extremely heads up play by him, too see that an make a bee across the entire rink to intercept that. Coach had nothing to do with it

AUTOMATICALLY. bradley had to know that jumping in. he did it simply to protect ovechkin. he knew they were both getting a penalty going in, he had to. everyone knows that. you learn that when you're a kid.

You see the phaneuf video where he dropped his gloves for a fight then just like, slipped and did an embarassing fall? he didn't get penalized, if you drop your gloves and go after the guy it's a penalty, if you drop and he skates away and you just pick them up again, it's not in alot of cases

lol no i didn't see that. not surprised though. it matters if you drop your gloves first or not. dropping your gloves first is always suppose to at least get you an instigator penalty. once someone punches it's a fight. it's automatic.
referees get a lot of discretion though. they get to decide. it's literally written in the rule book for the NHL that referees are allowed to make the call how they see it within the general boundaries set up.

As far as his hit on Downey being dirty or knee on knee I have no idea what people are smoking. I guess to some perception is reality. No matter how vivid your imagination is that hit was not even close to being dirty or knee on knee. People need to stop just making stuff up every time Ovie gets within a few inches of anyone. The last time I checked hitting was allowed in the NHL.

Having said that no one with a functioning brain can say now that Ovie is not willing to drop the gloves. He was absolutely ready to go and even took his helmet off during both altercations. Proved once again that he's a class act and has utmost respect for the traditions of hockey. In the eyes of everyone who understands hockey he earned respect for what he did here. There's no other way to possibly look at it. He can't control other people's actions & didn't even see Bradley coming.

As I was watching the game I was all excited to see Ovie fight when he dropped the mitts and slightly disappointed that Brads jumped in, but with my head I understand that it was the right thing to do. If Ovie's gonna fight he should start with someone who is a little closer to him when it comes to pugilistic experience, not go straight for one of the opposition's tough guys.
