i live near the prison, it freaks the crap outta me, and its in the top 100 scariest places on earth list....i went on halloween as well few years back, i cant ever do that again...i will never stwp foot in that dungeon again....but i really wanna go do a daytime tour soon, they always have those. ;)

@Junka0506 The film crew had to do a lot of renovation before they could film at the prison. When they got there, most of the rooms in the prison had extensive paint peeling. The director said in an interview that it looked like a confetti factory exploded inside and confetti was hanging on the walls and ceilings.

I heard they filmed in the actual mess hall and the other areas were built for the film. How did the mess hall end up looking so good still? I wonder if they redid it for the film, but why redo it and not other areas......great video though. I live 3 hours from Mansfield and am hoping to get up to the reformatory soon........

@shagger67 Yes it is....it is called the Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio......it is a historical location and also has haunted tours. One of the most haunted locations in America.

@KissaFishaStudios It's not a prison/reformatory anymore. They just have it running for people to go in and do tours, ghost hunts, and ghost tours. it is preserved, but not in use to hold inmates.

@ItsAnAliThing101 It is still called Mansfield Reformatory....I am apart of a Paranormal Group and one of our members runs things up there......there is a prison behind it that does hold inmates......its kinda creepy when one escapes and you are in there investigating.....ya they will never say it but you can see them scramble. It isn't a prison in the sense that it holds humans anymore.....but it holds a lot of spirits and also some really amazing memories for me.

It's really cool seeing where they film good movies. I was in the USN on submarines when Hunt for Red October was filmed. Part of that was filmed where I was stationed on the San Diego SubBase. Some of the extras were actual active duty Navy personnel. The director and all those people from Paramount came through and toured out command.

i was just at the ohio state reformatory last night for the haunted prison. i got to see all through it and saw the cell blocks, dining hall and everything. its really deteriorated. when i got home i watched shawshank redemption just to see what was actually used. it was a cool experience.

Incorrect. The cell blocks were newly built 1.5 miles away in a vacated Westinghouse factory. They did not use Mansfield Reformatory for that. The closest they got to the actual cells was the mess hall. Nice video though.

@riotgearhead It's amazing just how many people overlook that. It should become obvious when they see shots of the actual cellblocks since the cells don't even face one another. I always wondered how they would've gone about caputuring certain scenes had it been more cost-effective to restore and use the real cells in the movie.

SmackDownDivaNo1 you're right.  Those cells in Mansfield Reformatory do not face each other. Those horrifying cells at the real prison could never fit a camera or lights inside either. I think "Tango & Cash" filmed the cells from the outside looking in.

It's been so long since I've seen "Tango & Cash" that I don't remember a single thing about it, besides the actors who starred in it. The cells are extremely small though, as you pointed out. I remember thinking how hard it must've been for some of the larger inmates to have squeezed inside the doors when I was there this past summer.

A little more than half of the days were at the real prison. I threw out my call sheets and schedules, otherwise I could recall the exact amount of days shot there.

Great Video! I often drive on Ohio St. Rt. 95 (Where Morgan Freeman Red rode the bus at the end of the movie). Im also familiar with the intersection of Hagerman Rd. And Snyder Rd. where Red jumped out of the old red Ford truck. I love the fact that than majority of Shawshank was filmed in this area.

If you tour the prison, you can see the areas that were refurbished for the 3 movies that were shot there. My tour was interesting since I work in the Ohio prison system and there was also a former inmate in our group!

The prison cell scenes weren't shot there. They built another set in an old distribution center in Mansfield. They said it wasn't cost effective to restore the old cells, so they built cells out of wood in the distribution center. Essentially those cells haven't been touched since the prison was closed years earlier.
