wow i have visited all sites here because i love this movie ...i felt like I was watching it again for the first time. your editing skils will take you to a fantastic life if you can find the path to the right job. You did a majical job thank you so much for sharing the labour of love ......Tom
I rented this recently and it was so powerful without commercial interruption and censorship. A true work of art in film and storytelling. Thanks for the video...
@Junka0506 The film crew had to do a lot of renovation before they could film at the prison. When they got there, most of the rooms in the prison had extensive paint peeling. The director said in an interview that it looked like a confetti factory exploded inside and confetti was hanging on the walls and ceilings.
The beam that Brooks hung himself from that is shown in the video is a reproduction. Some time after filming, one of the workers decided to cut out that part for a souvenir.
WOW! What a great video! This is the best vid I have seen in a long time! You did a great job on it. I have seen the movie many times, and it never gets old to me. I love to watch anything that Morgan Freeman is in. He is a great actor and narrator as well!
I remember that older man, he had been in there for 50 years. You think 50 years, he spent the better half of his life there. He didn't want to leave, sad! :(
What an absolute incredible video... Thank You! I might just spend ANOTHER 11 minutes of my life, and watch it again ;) Then, pull out the "Shawshank Redemption" DVD and watch THAT!!!
I heard they filmed in the actual mess hall and the other areas were built for the film. How did the mess hall end up looking so good still? I wonder if they redid it for the film, but why redo it and not other areas......great video though. I live 3 hours from Mansfield and am hoping to get up to the reformatory soon........
um, I live like 5 minutes away from it. I know, haha. MANCI is the new one. It is a high-lockdown place. A lot of people from all over OH and even some other places are sent here, because it's a strict facility. But I do get what you mean, it really does hold spirits though. I really do believe that.
@shagger67 Yes it is....it is called the Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio......it is a historical location and also has haunted tours. One of the most haunted locations in America.
@KissaFishaStudios It's not a prison/reformatory anymore. They just have it running for people to go in and do tours, ghost hunts, and ghost tours. it is preserved, but not in use to hold inmates.
@ItsAnAliThing101 It is still called Mansfield Reformatory....I am apart of a Paranormal Group and one of our members runs things up there......there is a prison behind it that does hold inmates......its kinda creepy when one escapes and you are in there investigating.....ya they will never say it but you can see them scramble. It isn't a prison in the sense that it holds humans anymore.....but it holds a lot of spirits and also some really amazing memories for me.
It's really cool seeing where they film good movies. I was in the USN on submarines when Hunt for Red October was filmed. Part of that was filmed where I was stationed on the San Diego SubBase. Some of the extras were actual active duty Navy personnel. The director and all those people from Paramount came through and toured out command.
i was just at the ohio state reformatory last night for the haunted prison. i got to see all through it and saw the cell blocks, dining hall and everything. its really deteriorated. when i got home i watched shawshank redemption just to see what was actually used. it was a cool experience.
Google Maps: To find the prison, search "100 reformatory road, mansfield oh"
To find the beach at the end of the film, search " 17.676903,-64.902669 " (referred to as Zihuatenejo, Mexico in the film, but is actually the South-West shore of the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge in the Virgin Islands)
The Oak Tree is here " 40.653951,-82.391843 " (3357 Pleasant Valley Rd. Lucas, OH)
@michealsparrow blonde moment? (since 'shawshank prison' is actually the old Ohio State Reformatory--'shawshank is supposedly in New England according to the film...I don't think Ohio is New England...so no Shawshank isn't an actual prison.)
Incorrect. The cell blocks were newly built 1.5 miles away in a vacated Westinghouse factory. They did not use Mansfield Reformatory for that. The closest they got to the actual cells was the mess hall. Nice video though.
@riotgearhead It's amazing just how many people overlook that. It should become obvious when they see shots of the actual cellblocks since the cells don't even face one another. I always wondered how they would've gone about caputuring certain scenes had it been more cost-effective to restore and use the real cells in the movie.
SmackDownDivaNo1 you're right. Those cells in Mansfield Reformatory do not face each other. Those horrifying cells at the real prison could never fit a camera or lights inside either. I think "Tango & Cash" filmed the cells from the outside looking in.
It's been so long since I've seen "Tango & Cash" that I don't remember a single thing about it, besides the actors who starred in it. The cells are extremely small though, as you pointed out. I remember thinking how hard it must've been for some of the larger inmates to have squeezed inside the doors when I was there this past summer.
@riotgearhead ur so lucky u got to see one of the greatest films ever made but what i dont understand is why didnt this win one academy award that movie was so inspirational i watch at least ten times a year
@riotgearhead that isn't true,I lived in Mansfield,Ohio when this was filmed and it was filmed at the Masfield Reformatory. The only parts that weren't filmed there were the ones away from the prison. How you got your info I'll never know
@asphaltcowboy07 I worked on 52 of 73 days of filming, and have a credit in the film. The 6 tier cells were sets a mile away from the prison, used at least 20 days. A little more than half of the days were at the real prison. I threw out my call sheets and schedules, otherwise I could recall the exact amount of days shot there.
And the winner of this years Oscar goes to Herve Attia. Another legendary piece of work this time on my most favourite film of all time. Outstanding! Thank you :-)

If you tour the prison, you can see the areas that were refurbished for the 3 movies that were shot there. My tour was interesting since I work in the Ohio prison system and there was also a former inmate in our group!
The prison cell scenes weren't shot there. They built another set in an old distribution center in Mansfield. They said it wasn't cost effective to restore the old cells, so they built cells out of wood in the distribution center. Essentially those cells haven't been touched since the prison was closed years earlier.
this was the very finest film I've ever seen. The cinematography has not been matched in anything I have seen in the past 15 years. To everyone involved, my hats off to you. I have much to learn from the level and quality you presented in this film. Thank you for your hard work!
Excellent job. Bravo. You should string together a half hour of these shorts and pitch it to somebody in Hollywood. yeah, Networks show stuff like filming locations, but they always have some talking head rambling on and on, never letting photos, or video like this do all the talking.
