They would like the choice to keep the child, but they feel forced not to. Poverty is what is controlling women, not the anti-abortion crowd.

That should make us address poverty but it still does not justify forcing a woman to bear a child, again either through individual action or through government (that in a democracy represents the collective). Sure, the conditions under which the decision is made can (and sometimes should) be changed but that does not invalidate the decision.

Did you see the stats at Notre Dame? There were four times as many who signed a petition in favor of Obama's speaking there as who opposed it. That's 4 to 1. Good odds, I'd say.

But the issue is more complicated than the gov't trying to control women. Women in poverty feel they have no choice but to abort. It's not about freedom for them, it's about desperation. They would like the choice to keep the child, but they feel forced not to. Poverty is what is controlling women, not the anti-abortion crowd.

That should make us address poverty but it still does not justify forcing a woman to bear a child, again either through individual action or through government (that in a democracy represents the collective). Sure, the conditions under which the decision is made can (and sometimes should) be changed but that does not invalidate the decision.

Whether you are for or against abortion, its pretty ridiculous that an institute built upon the Catholic tradition would honor someone who is outspoken in his ways which defile the tradition of the religion. I'm Protestant and pretty indifferent to the issue because I'm a guy, but I went to Georgetown University. When I enrolled their I expected nothing but the tradition of the place, just as I would if I enrolled at an Islamic school.

The "fetus" has brain waves, individual genetic information, a beating heart, fingers, toes etc etc... the baby is even protected from its mother so the mothers body doesnt recognize the child as foreign material Sounds like a human being to me! The state always has the right to defend itself from violent criminals, even by capital punishment when absolutely necessary. Now, when it is absolutely necessary--if ever--is another question; I am inclined to say that such occassions are extremely rare. However, the fact remains that the state has that right. Now, when speaking of abortion, we are not concerned with a violent criminal but a totally innocent, defenseless child in the womb with the inalienable right to life. Much different.

You assume, without evidence, that the state has a right to capital punishment. Certainly, if we assume that a state's rights are derived froma) its constitution and b) a set of globally normative practices that have evolved over centuries I think that the conclusion would in fact be different. Most liberal democracies no longer use capital punishment. And, correct me if I am wrong, but the right of the American state to promulgate capital punishment is not guaranteed by the constitution.

The right of the state to defend itself is not a matter of producing corroborating evidence, as if we were a prosecutor in a criminal trial or a chemist in a laboratory; it is a matter of logic. Take it on an individual scale. If a violent criminal rushed me with a gun, and I had a chance to defend myself, I would be entirely justified in doing so, even if it resulted in the death of the criminal. Thus also with the state. Capital punishment--though usually unnecessary--is defense.

Hobsbawm's Nations and Nationalism since 1780: Programme Myth Reality. Its great, he details the rise of the state system as we know it. This would provide you with a little more insight on the development of state rights post-Westphalia.

2) The heartbeat starts at about 3 to 5 weeks, depending on whom you ask. The mother won't even know about her pregnancy before then. It would eliminate virtually all abortions, excluding the pill.

FredFoothand, Nope. I'm not saying people should use abortion for birth control. I didn't even mention that. I was saying that the government has got their hands in something that isn't even their business. It's just ridiculous. I believe people given the choice to either use this or not will make a morally sound decision, and to impose any beliefs on anyone else is like an insult to someone else's beliefs no matter how much you think your own beliefs may be right.

To the point where extracting an unborn baby for the sake of science seems minuscule. it simply dosen't matter, abortion WILL be legal for the sake of the democracy!!
