This is beautiful....how can you disagree???? This moves my soul, my heart and my mind..I have chills in my body from this.....it's simply magnificent
@KTeKanawa I completely agree with you. The singer is very good, and I'm not saying it isn't Lynne Dawson, but it sure as heck doesn't sound like her!
The problems between authentic and non-, began with not understanding the difference between instruments and voice. Don't project abilities (or lack of them) from Baroque instrument on the voice. Dawson beautiful and natural voice cannot be forced into uncertain and vague 'authentic rules of Baroque style'. I assume that also in Monteverdi's time there were many kinds of voices and vocal-techniques.
it's so unbelievable how many music genius write comments on this site, i mean you know so much about music and singing and style, you should be writing on a magazine or paper, not being here writing nonsense
Unless you actually lived in the 17th century, then obsessing about authenticity of vocal technique is a waste of time. None of us have ever heard a singer from that era and so criticing Ms. Dawson for lacking authenticity is simply unwise. The orchestral music can conceivably sound more authentic because the intruments can be constructed to closely resemble those used by Monteverdi. However vocal technique can't be replicated. In all, she has a marvelously pure tone and eloquent diction.
@legato699 i liek dawson more, but i think she just has more experience singing opera opera while figueras is better at renaissance genre. at any rate have u heard figueras sing ohime chio cado? monteverdi i think. hers is awesome
@moghedien13 Thanks for reporting me Ohimè ch'io cado sung by Figueras. Really great.
Now my turn: watch?v=V4bfCWt1wXk (Lamento della ninfa) The soprano is not the blond girl you see. The real singer is Claire Lefilliatre. So moving, so intense. I have a feeling it will make your day. If it doesn't, sorry about that. ;-)
@legato699 you did indeed make my day with that. what a lovely performance especially by Claire! the blonde dude and the lute player were hot too hahah
She is much much better than Figueras, she doesn't have FIX notes, she respects the composer, but she is natural and with a very beautiful sound. I think Monteverdi wanted THIS type of sound, and not fix voices, with lack of intonation....... I think Monteverdi was a baroque composer, ok, but he was not deaf..........
I fail to see why you have taken the trouble to make the comparison. They are both beautiful, but in very different ways. Figueras gives, in my view, a much more authentic performance in terms of period.
Dawson is perfection in this rendition as she usually is in her Early Music performances. The Gardiner 1988 performance of l'Jephtha' is another of her famous performances. Yes, one must understand the style of singing that was 'correct' in the Monteverdi era. She is magnificant!!!!
You have to look at the aria in context in order to understand why Monterrat sings it the way she does, but the way she sings it is undoubtably the way that Monteverdi would have wanted it. Mrs. Dawson has a wonderful voice, but she does not understand the true style or character of this aria...
The problem with Montserrat is that none of you are putting her singing in the context of what is going on in the opera. You are looking at the aria as absolute music, but it is not. The style is not supposed to be pretty or particually "expressive," it is a narrative to set the stage for the opera. When you actually know what it going one, people singing like this makes the aria more like a soap-opera than a serious drama.
This is horrible in terms of historical style and the context of the aria within the opera. She takes what is essentially a recited text and trys to turn it into a romantic style art song... and it does not work.
aah. it works...so i can add that the cd i was referring to is a production of Gardiner (1987 it says on the cd) and it is a fan-tas-tic cd. I only think his toccata is much too fast. Savall's is better.
...why wasn't my comment here? anyway..i wanted to say i have this song on a cd i bought a week ago and i absolutely looooove it and think lynne dawson has fantastic controll over her voice. But Montserrat was not bad and she is live indeed. Now let's see if my post works...
really don't care too much for this singer. Sure she has good phrasing, but it's too fast and empty of the character that is Dal Mio Permesso, and Orfeo; something I saw much more in the latter performance; plus, this is not a live recording, and that is something that speaks much more of of how a performance plays out.
This is beautiful....how can you disagree???? This moves my soul, my heart and my mind..I have chills in my body from this.....it's simply magnificent

Singers don't sing to please people, they sing to communicate emmotions through wonderful music.
Thank God for the varied styles and voices, and different ways of singing!
Take it or leave it, love it or hate it. But don't assume there is ONE way of singing Early Music of any kind of music for the matter.

Why should we love only one singer?
Please do visit Maria Cristina Kiehr's version; she is divine!

And just because Monteverdi's works were called drama con musica does not mean that singers back then used recitative instead of "singing."

Beatiful voice but the style is not right
she's sung this almost like a bel canto period aria
Monserrat Figueras dons't have the voice but respects more the style of the prologo
L'orfeo is not really an opera it is Dramma con musica so the prologo must be more a recitativo than a aria

I'm sorry, but she sounds absolutely pedestrian compared to Monserrat. Pretty music but totally misses the point of the style.

This is really pure and lovely, but my favorite La Musica remains Natalie Dessay, she gives tasteful embelishments and is more expressive.
