Good idea. I tried it and discovered that one thing to keep in mind though is that the scale is only accurate as long as the weight is hung an equal distance from the balance point. Or rather, if your container on one side hangs 8 inches out on the arm of the coat hanger, then the other container on the other side must also be 8 inches. Might be helpful to use one with notches cut in it.
