sad to hear about your Dad Robin , but he did a fantastic job with the tourists , i absolutely loved their music when I was in my teens ( nearly 47 now ) but just thought of having a listen :)
well he wrote this Robin so he achieved more than many - its a beautiful song - I saw the band at the Marquee when I was just a whippersnapper - cost 50p to get in.. so sorry to hear he has passed away - I lost my Dad 10 wks ago ..
i was privileged to meet Peet in 1991 or thereabouts... he looked like a vagrant but we had a wonderful evening at the Rifleman's Arms in Glastonbury and then he stayed overnight at my friend James's house and we played some music and just generally "chilled"... he was very pleased that "The Loneliest Man" was one of my favourite songs of all time, having written it... I am glad that i gave him that opportunity to be proud of a song that is awesome and always will be.
Tourists were such an under-rated band,me and a mate use to listen to Luminous Basements all the time, such a fine LP,Walls and Foundations was a classic,Peet Coombes was every bit the genius as much so as Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, just a fine fine band that the late 70's started to see popping up all over England.
people dont realise excellent harmonies dont come along very often lennon mccartney the hollies everlys peet and annies harmonies are right up there with the best of them chesk out everywhere you look on reality effect
I'd totally forgotten this one, sounds even better now. The Tourists always seemed a much more cosmopolitan lineup than the Eurythmics, remember being pretty upset hearing they had disbanded.
I'm Scottish, living in NY now, and this was the first time I heard them, on "TOTP" in 1979. I was so impressed, and Annie's voice still sounds lovely today. I didn't know Peet had passed away, how very sad :(
my favourite Tourists song - how Germany managed to ignore them during their active days is a mystery to me. they really had a lot of strong material to offer.
these guys were one of the first bands i ever saw live at newcastle city hall in feb 1980, can still remember that night, and it was 30 years ago! still blown away by it!!
... I always thought Annie had much more spikier hair during her days with the Tourists, or am I getting it mixed up with the mid-80s. If any fans out there could direct me to any - absolutely any picture of her with spiky hair around these times and up to very early 80s - I will be extremely grateful.
Wow! I used to love the Tourists and this is my favourite song sung by Annie bar none. The album version was produced by Conny Plank but Dave Stewart's production on the single was so much better.
I always preferred the Tourists to the Eurythmics. When I heard Annie sing Shining Light I thought that it needed more guitar and would have been a great Tourists track.
Farmajesus - Your dad was a legend in my book and I miss him too. I didn't realise he was dead until tonight - such a shame.
Just wanted to echo the sentiment of others I've seen on here. You're dad was truely a fantastic artist. I was very sad to hear of his passing and the difficult time he had over the years. I have spent many a day googling for acid drops music or other music from your father but alas nothing has ever turned up. I would really love to know if your father recorded after the tourists and if anything is out there. Many thanks and regrets once again. Nick

I saw the Tourists at Ipswich Gaumont late70's iirc - Peet was so flamboyant on stage.

Was at the Tourists first Aussie gig many years ago at a venue called The South Side Six in outer Melbourne.
About 12 people turned up.
Annie tried in vain to get us out of our chairs and on the dance floor, no one did.
The band gave their all, even to an embarrassingly small crowd.
I went to their next gig in trendy South Yarra, the venue was almost full.
That was a gig where Annie almost knocked her self out hitting her head on an overhead structure.
Ahhh the memories!

One of the best songs of the late 70's, a lost classic in my opinion.

Hey David,
How are you---- I always thought The Loneliest Man In The World was written about Alistair, not you. Well you learn something new every day.
Kind regards,

Lyrics that turned out to be sadly prophetic when ones considers the tragic trajectory of Peet Coombes' life after the band split
