yes u can,but its always better to model your base mesh in an external application like max or maya and model this shapes on your base model , if u dont do that you need to add alot of resolution to your mesh so it wont brake when u try to model this stuff
@Geoxile mudbox has no need for these tools. mudbox is used for the autodesk pipeline, applications such as maya or max can be used to create low poly base meshes which can then be transferred directly into mudbox for further detailing.
@kiviplz Saying that it has no need for those tools seem short sighted. Even if I modeled in mudbox I would simply return to Max for retopo. Having concepting tools would make it better as a standalone program and make it more competitive with the likes of 3Dcoat and Zbrush, which seems to be everyone's favorite sculpting solution these days.
What's the cost of animation if poly counts high, would geometry detect errors, say you built a planet at insane quality but clouds and such were moving in high quality what would suffer.
Is there a plan to include something similar to the clipping brushes found in Zbrush 4? I also was wondering if there is a way to extract a new surface from the existing one similar to Zbrush?
I really liked this video. Been using Mudbox for a long time now and haven't really made good use of the wax tool. Been building up, smoothing, pinching...etc and basically that's a big fight. Thanks for this.
Just a note, I'm not really sure if you noticed this while sculpting it, but the chest piece looks identical to The Brain from 'Pinky and the Brain'.
what model Wacom tablet are you using and do you think it makes a major difference like in the illustration realm or as long as it has pressure sensitivity should be fine?
@MrMattWebb you would actually export a lower level out to Max, along with the displacement maps. Check out @noggity His Mudbox videos are very informative
@AtrocityFilms i just tried and applied them using the general maps system in the materials. The displacement and normal map together do not look good at all.
hey, deos enybody knows how can I achieve a model with polygonal surfaces?. Something like in the movie at the moment 0:06 3d max can do this or any other software?. I need it for paper craft (pepakura designer)
Is it possible to make horns/ wings from normal head or sphere without using a base mesh?

I just overflew the video... but what I got from this: is this guy doing this whole model just by using the Sculpt, wax and smooth tool?!
Great skill!

Does Mudbox 2011 have tools to start from scratch like Zbrush's spheres or 3D Coat's voxel shapes?
Geoxile 5 months ago
@Geoxile IT doesnt have anything like zspheres, but there are bases meshes. e.g. box, head, human body ect..
hensun91 2 months ago
@hensun91 Yea, I tried the student version... Too bad, those kind of building blocks can be useful for concepting basic shapes

u can do the same thing in 3ds max 2010 if u convert to editable poly and use the push and pull tool.

You can do the same thing with notepad and just write down the coordinates for each vert and make an obj.
But its not quite as easy :P

would you say is better than zbrush? i have to choose between one of them
tsuikjoshiomatsu 1 year ago
As of right now I LOVE zbrush3.5 r3 and it has several robust features that, imo, make it a more powerful workhorse overall.
However mudbox is faster, has better maya/max integration, and amazingly powerful features and such of its own like those display filters.
In general since these apps eventually mimic each other over time I would say demo each one and see which interface/workflows u like better.
if u are new to highpoly and familiar with autodesk products definitely box.
diogeneslaertius666 1 year ago
But try to get a hands on for both and look at some tutorials for both and get some more opinions from other people :)
