Back in the 80's (oh lord, "OK, Grandpa...") there was a DJ at the best bar in San Francisco. In between the usual dance music: New Order and the Cure, he would play Van Dyke Park songs. I loved that!
What a joy to see Van Dyke with a large ensemble, not crammed onto a postage stamp sized stage. And what a pity that such a concert couldn't happen here in his home country.
In addition to Symphony Sid Page, my guess is that Syd Straw is the female vocalist. Sounds like her (check out her stuff with the Golden Palominos) & matches with the few photos I've seen. VDP contributed keyboards and an arrangement on her 1st LP, Surprise. This is gorgeous. Wish I could have sucked up the ambiance of such a classy presentation in person, but this is the next best thing. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful! A note - the concertmaster featured here on America The Beautiful is reported to be Sid Page. Mr. Page is an amazing violinist. One of his early career gigs was with Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks (check out their music on Rhapsody). The musical world is one of the truly diverse and inclusive of human endeavor. My son is a concert violinist (amateur), leads his own chamber quartet and plays violin and keyboards in a rock band. Now that's getting around wouldn't you say?
He can sing in Japanese? Mind bloooown.
