Read EC's biography; read his own words about Jimi and Stevie Ray. It's better than typing a bunch of conjecture.
Also; - there is a cat on The Gear Page web site that actually opened for Cream during a good chunk of their initial U.S. tour. He wrote a thread about it, and it's great reading. Oh; the guy on TGP also posted quite a few cool photos from various gigs he did when his band opened for Cream.
NICE ONE Joe for not trying to blow Clapton off Gary Moore made some bad comments about joe in guitarist mag but claptons never guested with him he knows class
Eric have a touch like no one else, so where other guitarist try to blow him of, he kicks back with class and taste... Watch Buddy Wittington (John Mayall and the bluesbreakers) try it on Eric.. Gary Moore said that no one can and ever will blow off Eric..
@Bigbluesboy Just goes to show how subjective this stuff is, because I thought Buddy blew Clapton into a deep hole and then filled it with cement. I, however, aren't going to pretend that my opinion is definitive. You should try it.

Where Clapton's playing has 'mellowed' with age, Joe's playing always seems to be right on the money - even though he's only 32! Don't get me wrong, both legendary bluesmen... but Clapton was a country mile off of Joe's talent at the same age. This seems to be a sort of 'student' surpassing teacher coming of age type deal here...
Clapton at 20 was more raw and original than Bonamassa . Both are experts and clapton now is more refined in his playing but in his Cream days no one could match him . Even Jimi hendix looked to him-
That's true. Eric is great and I love him, but Hendrix tore him another hole.. And he said simply that he did that because Eric didn't do blues comping, which is true. In that incredible Bluesbreakers albums, where his soloing was incredible, no comping... except first position chords like a beginner...albeit with awsome tone.
By the time Clapton was 32, he had influenced just about every living rock guitarist including hendrix, page, van halen, stevie ray vaughan, etc....i listened to a radio show from bonamassa's website where he picked Clapton as his second biggest influence...actually, he said he wanted to be Clapton growing up...but picked BB King as his number 1 because of BB King's influence as both a musician and a mentor...Clapton with Cream was remarkable...even the old blues guys were impressed
I was in the choir row 7, as you say a joy to watch been following EC since 1960's and JB since 2005 so what an unexpected pleasure when Joe annouced his guest. The first time they've played together as well I believe. Thanks for posting such a good clip.

not to be a dick but clapton actually feared hendrix, along with a lot of other british bluesmen like beck because he was getting so huge
hendrix even blew eric off stage at a cream show no disrespect to eric im just stating facts

I dont think so man, Eric Clapton is a legend, Joe is amazing, but has not really invented anything new. Clapton was in the FIRST supergroup!

Totally agree mate. I know alot of Creams music was covers but the originals were and still are un touchable in my view
gazzaboy2531977 2 years ago 2
@bluesman841 Neither of them invented a damn thing. They just wrote music, and most of it is sweet.
