I absolutely love this song and think it's an utter masterpiece, but I like owl city very much too. let's not flame other artists, okay? if you knew both artists' stories, you'd see that owl city didn't copy postal service. just saying. Anyways! I love the way the rhythm kinda breaks apart occasionally in this song. it's pretty much the perfect touch.
This song has so many great qualities, but the lyrics are what capture me the most. Ben Gibbard touches a lot on the subject of isolation, and i can appreciate that. "I know there's a big world out there, like the one that I saw on the screen in my living room late last night, it was almost too bright to see." So sad but soooo good.
@blackmoon4441 It's about drug/alcohol addiction- the metaphors are all there if you pay attention to them. The drugs make life a prison; the "guards at the on ramps" he speaks of can symbolize friends or enablers that keep the drugs/alcohol in his life. Then most of the other imagery- the tv screen, the lack of a party, the drinking by candlelight each night further represent an inability to escape addiction.
@blackmoon4441 Exactly. I'm tired of songs that give addiction a positive spin- the "drinking until we puked," etc. sort of songs. Really enjoy this spin on it.

Nostalgia...especially the line "It's not a party if it happens every night." Wouldn't necessarily call them bad nights, but I had enough of them.

They're right. They're entirely right. The Cascades are on one side, the sound on the other and theres no way out. There might as well be guards.

I consider this the sleeper song of the album. Seems bland at first, but then it grows on you.

I know there's a big world out there like the one i saw on the screen
In my living room late last night,
It was almost too bright to see
And i know that it's not a party if it happens every night
Pretending there's glamour and candelabra
When you're drinking by candlelight
What does it take to get a drink in this place?
What does it take, how long must i wait?

@dunefall This place is a prison
And these people aren't your friends
Inhaling thrills through $20 bills
And the tumblers are drained and then flooded again
And again
There are guards at the on ramps armed to the teeth
And you may case the grounds from the cascades to Puget sound,
But you are not permitted to leave
