  • DUDE! OMG! THE VIKINGS DO HAVE THEIR OWN TANK!!!!!!

  • @geko213 we have several :P although this is probably the coolest - from an engineering point of view

  • @F3udF1st Yeah, it kinda sucks that it's not Norweigian, but it's scandanavian all the same... xD

  • "Yank destroyer?"

How is it a 'yank destroyer' when it is said in the video that the Stridsvagn 103 was meant to counter any Soviet armored push to NATO territory through Sweden?

  • I don't see how this got 6th?

  • "yank destroyer"?

    >:/

  • Excellent Tank for defence. It would have been nice to see a redesigned verstion with a 120mm cannon, a modern 1500Hp diesel engine, and an RWS carrying a 30mm cannon for non MBT targets. Maybe the should add some movement to the gun, like the Stug, to give it attack capability aswell. All other tanks have turrets, but when engaging the enemy, it is advisable to point your best armor, the front, towards the enemy. I think that then it could fire on the move.

  • sweds being a relatively small country (in terms of population) have managed to develop their own naval vessels, own tank and own fighter aircraft. wich is an extraordinary achievement!!!

  • Question, does the gun hav to be loaded from the outside?

  • @lotrhalo Thought so too but apparently not, it has automatic loading. We're not that stupid ;D

  • No turret = Self Propelled Gun ????

  • wholly shit. a tank's drift!!!!

  • IKEA tank, allen wrench included! :)

  • HAHA

After every shot it look´s like its taking a shit :D

  • this is really nothing innovative about this design that is clearly based on stug, hetzers, jadtigers

  • Im preatty sure that it is classified as a self propeled gun since it doesnt have a turret

  • how can this freaky looking, untested in actual combat tank be better than the panther? A tank which served as the model of inspiration for all future main battle tanks?

    I call bullshit

  • @TheProjektcc The Panther was a copy of T-34 with sloped armour and technology from the Tiger tank mixed together. It didn't perform good on the battlefield due mechanical problems and lack of supplies. This tank is very effective as a defensive tank in forest. It is reliable and very easy to maintain taking little resources. It can aslo be used as a multi tool working vehicle digging trenches, plowing roads and towing stuff.

  • that's normal for self-propelled artillery. Did you seen what M1 does?

  • Swdish tank against Soviet union on Swedish terrain...

WAIT A SECOND!!! Sweden never was next to Soviet Union... FAIL

  • @Woffelism Is the US next to any of the following countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam or Korea? No! And yet they managed to invade all of them. Do why shouldn't the Soviets be able to invade a country they have been at war with seven times before? Dumb Finns...

  • @Woffelism There was no finnland

  • lol that shell pooping out the back is funny.

  • why the hell did it supprise people ... the germans used stugs against t34/85 versions and still 3/6 T34's where blown against 1 stug in defensive warfare for sweden this was a great tank :)

  • @artacania becuse the stug is a infantry support veichal this is a tank.!

  • Why is this tank ranked higher than the Sherman or Panther? Does this oddity actually have any combat history like the other two or was it little more than a prototype? The Sherman was a very basic tank but nonetheless the war winner in the west and the Panther was one of Hitler's impressive wonder weapons with a very distinguished history but not a war winner due to small numbers although it scared allied tank crews along with the Tiger (not even on the list?). This list is highly questionable.

  • @86celtics the tiger or the sherman for that matter was acualy not a wery good tank especially the Tiger.

The Tiger was not effective or inovativ only good thing about it is it for the time thick armor and its fear factor witch was overated plus wery few Tigers were accualy built

  • @frazzer316 The Sherman was a basic tank but with substantial combat history. The Tiger/Panther tanks also had substantial combat history but due to small numbers couldn't take out the never ending waves of Sherman's and T-34's although kill ratio was very high. The US/Soviet Union chose quantity over quality and the Germans chose the opposite which proved a loser. Regardless, all these tanks have historical significance. The Stridsvagn NEVER saw combat so why is it ranked over ones that did?

  • @frazzer316 Also, not only did this "6th greatest tank" never do anything to warrant such a high ranking but only 290 were built. Shoudn't you have to actually do something to deserve the title of "Greatest Ever"? Like I stated earlier, this list is highly questionable.

  • sweden have nice girls but have ugly tank realy ugly tank

  • I wonder if Finland or Norway ever used this tank in their armies. Since Sweden doesn't border with Russia, the Red Army would have to move through Finland or northern Norway to make it to Sweden, posing an equally danderous threat, especially for Finland.

  • It's like, in design terms, like a big enormous lowrider in that the wheels can be raised and lowered for the vehicle to move up and down and side to side to aim the gun. Super-sized beefy lowrider hydraulics.

  • i am swede and this tank could beat t 90, sweden sitched tank just if a new russia tank like a better then t 90

  • @MultiMarcus99

No sry dude but it cant. T90 has 125mm cannon and A FRIKIN TURNING TOWER and can be a serious threat to even M1 Abrams

  • Served with a S battalion and loved them. Ability to use the suspension to pop up and shoot and duck down for cover. 1 meter longer gun than anyone else 250-300 mm armour autoloading. Outer armour with 10 degres angle.Ability to operate it with one man. Perfect for a figth when you were outnumbered 300 to.24. I can also agre that they werent perfect for offensive operation.

  • does the barrel run through the entire tank?

  • @PirateMcSandwich yes , and it was loaded by soldiers standing behind that tank ,and they ran behind that tank all the time on horses

  • In Sweden, we don't need turrets to kick ass!

  • this does look more like a tank destroyer more like a stryker just older

  • so do you actually have to load that from the outside then? I hope not

  • @Dedfaction

No, it had a automatic loader, one shot every three seconds.... Still hard to beat!

  • @benho278 Christ! thats pretty damn quick :)

  • @Dedfaction

    Here you go...

    armor.kiev.ua/Tanks/Modern/STRV/s_komp.gif

  • 4:34 Tank poop

  • really??? maybe you should make a research yourself, in my opinion, if that kind of tank really works? it should have been developed nowadays, and if it so, abram and leopard2 make and easy target to it because of its sight disadvantage, why??? coz it must stop to make a fire, while those two beasts can sneek-up behind to destroy that crap tank.

  • They forgot to mention that a tank with no turret is much easier to maintain, build and harder to hit. Usually the most vulnerable spot on a modern MBT is where the turret meets the hull.

Concept is not unique though. Germans thought of it first, and the hydraulic system was first used by the French on the Char B in the 1920s

  • Surely this is a tank destroyer, not a tank.

  • The guy at 1:20 says that sweden was surrounded by warsaw pact and nato... Finland never was part of warsaw pact.

  • Wow, this is the first time im proud of what my country is capable of making.

  • looks like a stug IV

  • @nikola2500 same concept in terms of tactics and use as the stug too

  • @nikola2500

it was inspired by the StuG 3 & 4, so you are correct there. the reason why it doesn't have an Turret it that Sweden is a Country with Trees. so a Turret is completly useless there.

  • @devilcruiser it is low

  • @devilcruiser Uhm, which came like years after? This tank could take a whole number of T-72s out before they could ever get close... Do some research, please? :)

  • Nice to see this reviewed

  • nice tank it looks like its shitting out the shells XD no serious its an nice tank

  • @369NICK963

    Fully automatic reloading canon.

  • Brilliant!

  • My favorite tank for home activities, it looks like a sports car, extreme wide and very low profile, and i think the first tank with a gas-turbine build in series.

  • haha this baby is T-72's worst nightmare...really impressive and innovative engineering - swedes are clever dudes it seems

  • Sweden had to get rid of the tank because

we needed a attacktank to be member of the EU! thats the only reason why we get rid of that tank!! the gun have same specific as the 120mm,and germany produced the shells to the tank! and when

other tankproducers start to manufactoring the 120mm the price got to high! as defendingtank its still best in the world! i have drived sleeped and shot with that tank!

  • the engineering is very impressive. i'm sure it would have removed plenty of T-72's from existence :D

  • i d say so too

  • @ec5 Yes but we will never know :P

  • you sleeped with that Tank ? : D

Give me one of those Baby Tanks ^^

  • My favorite AFV design!

  • the swedish should have cept the s tank

  • The 105mm gun isn't as powerful as the more popular 120mm Rheinmatall gun, so it's understandable why they got rid of it in favor for the Leopard 2.

  • You clearly know fuck all.

  • it's a tank that can destroy any tank with a single shot and that can't any modern tank do

  • dude its gun cant its 105mm which isnt neccesarily weak but contradicts ur comment nyway i would say its the best tank ever for defending ur homeland but for attacking it would fail hard

  • IS2 too destroy any tank by single shot. but reload time is bad.

  • THat isnt a tank...its some weird Assault gun haha....kinda looks kewl imo tho

  • Its a tank without a turret.

  • This tank is a piece of shit. In order to aim it's gun it has to move a few tons of earth and knock down some trees while moving the whole tank. A complete failure

  • it was designed for a DEFENSIVE warfare

when lying in defense position you don't need a turret, the tank destroyers of WW2 worked the same way, and that worked brilliantly

  • that tank just shit itself... scary indeed!

  • whats the point of the fence thing in the front?

  • All enemy rounds that hits the fence will either blow up there or change direction so that they won't harm the tank. Same thing has just startet to be used by others

  • Fence armor doesn't work like that.

It's a defence against shaped charge warheads. Makes them detonate before reaching the armor proper. An armor-piercing kinetic shell will simply go through it like a rifle bullet through a piece of paper.

  • odd thing about RPG and Sagger missiles is they detonate from a small button on the end. The fence can trap the round often without the little button being pressed. That is the principle of the fence armor or the (Russian developed) slat armor seen in Iraq. Western AT weapons mostly use a nose crush detonator, which would go off if used against slat armor, and that has its effectiveness very slightly reduced by incorrect standoff.

  • so Sweden copied the German stug?

  • The Stug could move it's barrel

  • many thanks for post all this doc!!

  • GO SWEDEN SVERIGE

  • loved how the shell comes out of the rear =)

  • Gotta be the first tank in the world that poops =)

  • it was actually an auto loader, which cut the crew size to 2 people.

  • Well, since Sweeden will probably never wage offensive war, this tank is perfect. It would be employed in defensive actions, in "hull-down" tank ditches.

  • Gotta admire the creativity.

  • WTF!?

First off, Sweden was not neighboured by Warsaw pact, but Finland. Another neutral country.

S-tank has great features as a defensive tank, and unconventional does not mean poor performer.

  • Finland was sort of more leaning towards the Soviet Union then it was towards the West. Finland had very good relations with the soviet union after 1944.

  • Very good relations is a misunderstaning of situation. Paasikivi himself was actually a traitor to the state.(Finns will get angry, but it does not mean he was not a traitor)

Communistic elements got a foothold in Internal police.

Communistic youth organizations were guided from USSR.

Soviets dicated many things in post-war Finland and they got Porkkala occupied.

Relations were not good in any place, save between communistic elements.

  • Yeah and I bet we would´ve invaded Sweden with USSR.. come on!

  • thast the reason why the finnish army only uses soviet equipement

  • They don't anymore. Their main battle tank is the GERMAN Leopard 2A4, no longer the SOVIET T72.

  • T-55 is still in use as engineering vehicle. FDF also uses BMP-2's.

  • I wouldn't call Leorpards, Crotale NG's, CV-90 and Hornets soviet made.

  • kinda nifty, like a stug but it needs a bigger gun

  • Whaddya mean? It has a 105 MBT gun, same caliber as the M1 Abrams has.

  • All Abrams, no matter what model, now have 120mm.

  • Its still very good, and the proven 105 mm gun is very good for taking out the days tanks for the opposite side.
