Dave Mello is underestimated here. just because he didn't go as far as everyone else post Op Ivy doesn't mean what he did for the band is of any less value than Freeman's or Michaels' or Armstrong's contribution. he could hold a fast punk rock tempo and hit it pretty hard and his technical skills were up to par. if anyone's gonna say shit, Jesse Michaels is 1/4th of operation Ivy.
Tim wrote some of the songs in opivy, Jesse wrote most of them, but Tim wrote some, so with that said, he's just as important, Hell, Dave Mello was just as important...
To this argument before me, Freeman is definitly more important. His bass playing is unlike any other you'll hear, especially for punk bands. Armstrong on the other hand, doesn't stand out. I can tell just by listening to a song that Freeman is playing the bass, but not if Armstrong was playing guitar.
Ehh, Tim Armstrong wasn't as important as Matt Freeman. One of the things that seperated Operation Ivy from other punk was the amazing bass lines. Anyone can replace Tim's guitar style, but not many can replicate Matt Freeman's upbeat, yet intense bass style.
you cant replace his amazing lyrics or arrangeing and for the most part his guitar playing influenced a lot of the people that could replace him, so id say although freemans probably one of the greatest of all time tim is more important than him
Dude, if you've listened to rancid, most of the lyrics aren't that great. The guitar also is unremarkable. The bass, however, is always exceptional. I have heard some of his earlier lyrics that were good, but for the most part, he wasn't exceptional. Freeman is what made rancid and op ivy different than other punk bands musically. Jesse is what made it lyrically exceptional. Tim isn't a bad guitarist, its just hes not as important
