a healthy dose of influence from "THX-1138" in this video for sure, man i love this tune! Grace is still one of my all time fave Rush albums, fucking amazing stuff!
"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" 1968 novel about a man who chases down android escapees who have assumed Human identities. The movie "Blade Runner" was based on this where androids were trying to crack their termination codes. RUSH "One humanoid escapee one android on the run seeking freedom beneath the lonely desert sun, trying to change its program, trying to change the mode, crack the code"
Gee- I wonder if Neil read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" or saw "Blade Runner"!! :))
1 0 0 1 is a binary code which indicates a malfunction has happened. Apparently the cyborg in this song experienced this kind of breakdown. Bring me more songs about malfunctioning machines!
@MultiMarkle That is why Rush kicks ass. They always have songs based on scifi stories or some clever idea and are able to rock the hell out of it. Cant say that about most bands these days.
they sound good...i understand that this kind of deviant rock n roll ...i mean deviant... by their very original sound...not like the other...their sound can really trouble people (as xyz said)... like a band who try to go in a very own and new aera in music... it probably won't really surprise people who have a real wide rock collection...and specially in prog music... but for all the others (so the large marjority) ...it will be like a "waooowww" to themselves...at least at the begining...
Anyone seen "The Body Electric" cartoon on TV? I think it's from Canada and had a pretty much all Rush soundtrack. It's about a domed city with two humans, dodgy robots and a fat kid running the show from memory. Anyone know where I can get this cartoon?
my first view - that was frickin cool. i like the escape into the sunset - beautiful. so great to see a band that wants to entertain and not just have some "hip" and outrageous image.
This is actually a political song about the obots who replay each of the days, a hundred years of routine. . . They bow their heads and pray to the mother of all machines. . . Dinglebarry Soetoro.
I saw them perform this at Radio City Music Hall in late '83 or early '84, prior to the release of 'Grace Under Pressure' in April of '84. I don't know if they do it anymore, but Rush used to hit the road just before a new album would come out and test out the new material before anyone had heard it. As I remember, this song got a very positive response from the crowd. It still holds up today. Awesome song. Awesome band.
Video reminds me of Blade Runner the movie, but not so much the song.
Now, the song + video together, remind me of Philip K. Dick, which is close enough (not specifically 'Androids', if you read his stuff, more along the line of his short stories).
@loooooooo65432 I 100% agree!!! You have great taste I wanna say it was the Presto tour 90? they played this song and also wanna add Countdown but i heard they did it on the Vapor Trails tour and some old stuff they almost ended their tour in the USA and then to Europe to close it out I always get worried it maybe their last im thinkin of a rodie and seein them before they leave the USA RUSH always gives you your moneys worth awesome shows full 2 hours plus take care
Great,it never seizes to amaze me how 3 guys can make such powerful music.I discovered them roundabout 2 decades ago when I was more into Saga.So Rush was a swell completion of bands I just had to tune into.Funny how I listened so many times to this song & dived deep into it and finally seeing this video. The '' Grace Under Pressure '' album is still one of my favorites. But then again I haven't listened to all albums yet. They've made a lot of good music & lyrics, that's for sure. Thanks a lot.
@Ace4Tree1 the amazing thing is.. they sound just as good live! I've never heard a band sound live...just like they do on the studio album. They sound so rich, so harmonized, so orchestrated.. So COOL!!!
just a moment .. what I am about to say -you will not believe..this band has not only seen a space shuttle take off in life but also they know about programed generated life forms..In which military has been involved in human abductions -also the grays and the reptilians who extract information from the military and vice a versa who in turn screw each other as I might say..Niel seems to after the death of his daughter and come along wife has interacted with the elite..who are going to kill us..
@sify11 1001001 into text code from binary means " i ". In the context of the song as if said by an android, its god damn amazing. But hey that's just the power of Rush, and the power of Neil Peart's sandvich, that gives him the ability to write bad ass lyrics.

This album could have been so much more with better production. It is a very good document of the rock "art form" in the Western world during the Cold War. And, yeah, this tune fucking jams.
Completely agree! I always thought the production on this album was lousy and didn't do the band's performance and the songs justice. Compared with the amazing production on the previous albums, it sounded like this was recorded on wax cylinder using Dubly ;-). It's such a great album material-wise though and very much of it's time. Remember the good old 1980s? We all thought the end of the world was nigh!
No other band sounded like this. Literate and technical
with amazing content. So many people missed the boat on this band. I remember playing this for my sister and she looked totally confused. She later admitted hearing songs coming from my room and stopping to listen. She now totally appreciates them..
@xyz321123 I hate it when you play people older rush like this and they wont give it a chance when they hear the synthesisers and such. I try to get them to listen to the MUSIC but they just don't have taste most of the time, dicks.
@xyz321123 Never saw them in concert but they are the best I've ever heard. Getty Lee has an amazing voice and their style and sound differs from others. Agree with you.
Hey RUSH Nation, video concept alone was very very cool. My Bro Eric and I loved this one big time. MTV was gracious enough to play it on a liberal basis, but we managed to crank it over and over! 2112.
@goldrush255 Of course...it comes from Rush's best era of music 1980-1986. Not saying the other era's weren't good as well but this was a time when everything they did was flawless. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a total tool. When I hear people comparing Snakes and Arrows to anything off of Grace Under Pressure or Power Windows or Signals or Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves, I automatically know they have no clue what the fuck they are talking about.
I have a question hopefully someone can answer. This video and song was one of a many variety of songs from different bands in a movie. The first time I saw this video was in that movie. It was about some young guys who played videos on a TV program. The movie was some low grade movie from what I remember of it, .Does anyone know the name of it? I would like to find it to see it again! Thanks!
Its the digital binary code that form bits and bytes used in computer data transmission (1=on, 0=off). 32 bit binary code is the current state of the art.

Great song. To bad the video has nothing to do with what the song is about. ie after man is gone robots/computers trying to make it and survive where we could not.

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
go get aids motherfucker?
what are you fucking twelve?
i came here to see if there were any stupid fucking rush zealots who think EVERYTHING by Rush is amazing.
you fall into that category.
and also, you can have your opinion on your music but there IS such a thing as bad music, hold your fire and grace under pressure were BAD albums, that's why they NEVER PLAY THEM LIVE. god damnit your fucking stupid.
I knew you'd go off about that. When i say majority i mean look at all the comments of the people who are saying that its a good song/video and everything. If you calm yourself down you'll notice that most of these people like the song and band.
Lemme get this straight, you say we can have our own opinion yet you still go rambling on about how we're alll "FUCKING STUPID." Fucking hypocrite. YOU think you know everything?? I went to one of Rush's recent concerts (6/15 in Boston, MA). And you say that Rush doesn't play Grace Under Pressure because its so bad?OH YEAH? Well i have video proof that they played Between the wheels, Distant Early Warning, The Enemy Within. So yeah your totally wrong if they're playing those songs 24 yrs later.
Hey fucking jakkass! This is a good song stupid fuck, and indeed i dont like all Rush songs, but 70% are good. So shut the fuck up when you're talking about something you dont know jagg about it
You must be some sort of purist or something. Come have you lsitened to Grace Under Pressure. Seriously? It's so good, and they DO play those songs live (moron), obviously not every song is fantastic but so what?
This is one of their "sleeper hits".Not alot of radio play, but the drums, guitar and vocals are on point as always. One of my favs, and my 3 year old boy will not singing 1001!!
I can't help but wonder if the song/song title may have been partly inspired by the 1962 Twilight Zone episode "I Sing The Body Electric". The episode was written by famous sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury (Farenheit 451). Neil Peart is famous for having been inspired by sci-fi and fantasy writings.
@StKittsDave Yeah they have a number of bad videos but I would say most of them fall under mediocre. Plus they do have a couple of very good videos, Mystic Rhythms is one that comes to mind.
I saw bits of the "Enemy Within" video in there. Great song, but I'm not much a Rush video fan. They always seem somewhat corny to me, especially "Time Stand Still" lol.
Does anyone know what 1001001 actually means in binary?
um no - actually it means nothing since it's only 7 characters and not 8. You'd need 8 for a single character. If the last character was a zero then it'd mean ' and if it was a one then it'd mean "
Seems to me the producers of the Hunger Games movie must've used this video as an influence, the robot security guards look alike.

Dude are you some kinda retard? Didn't your mother gave you engough love?
First of all, i gave MY opinion...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
go get aids motherfucker?
what are you fucking twelve?
i came here to see if there were any stupid fucking rush zealots who think EVERYTHING by Rush is amazing.
you fall into that category.
and also, you can have your opinion on your music but there IS such a thing as bad music, hold your fire and grace under pressure were BAD albums, that's why they NEVER PLAY THEM LIVE. god damnit your fucking stupid.
steveatthedisco9 3 years ago
I knew you'd go off about that. When i say majority i mean look at all the comments of the people who are saying that its a good song/video and everything. If you calm yourself down you'll notice that most of these people like the song and band.
raptor750r 3 years ago
Lemme get this straight, you say we can have our own opinion yet you still go rambling on about how we're alll "FUCKING STUPID." Fucking hypocrite. YOU think you know everything?? I went to one of Rush's recent concerts (6/15 in Boston, MA). And you say that Rush doesn't play Grace Under Pressure because its so bad?OH YEAH? Well i have video proof that they played Between the wheels, Distant Early Warning, The Enemy Within. So yeah your totally wrong if they're playing those songs 24 yrs later.
raptor750r 3 years ago
permanent waves, and moving pictures.
best Rush albums EVER
YOU LOSE.
steveatthedisco9 3 years ago
Actually I was also at the 6-15 show at the Comcast and they only played "Between the Wheels."

Hey fucking jakkass! This is a good song stupid fuck, and indeed i dont like all Rush songs, but 70% are good. So shut the fuck up when you're talking about something you dont know jagg about it
kevinst17 3 years ago
You must be some sort of purist or something. Come have you lsitened to Grace Under Pressure. Seriously? It's so good, and they DO play those songs live (moron), obviously not every song is fantastic but so what?
oreoguy55 3 years ago
who really gives two shits what you think if you're just gunna flip out on what the MAJORITY thinks???
raptor750r 3 years ago
MAJORITY?! Who the FUCK have you been talking to about rush!
The main reason it's bad, is because it's like Rush, without the distinct Rush sound!
Rush isn't so mellow, and Niel Peart is almost ALWAYS drumming more impressively than that. It's PROG ROCK, it's supposed to be complex!
That song has abandon all of the great aspects of Rush.
steveatthedisco9 3 years ago
Dude you must not like to think because this songs great, just because its not exactly prog doesnt make it suck.
oreoguy55 3 years ago
This is one of their "sleeper hits".Not alot of radio play, but the drums, guitar and vocals are on point as always. One of my favs, and my 3 year old boy will not singing 1001!!

will not stop that is..

Oh yeah - that episode was about androids.

Rush. Best band worst videos.
StKittsDave 4 years ago 3
What can I say? This video was made during the early to mid eighties. Video was still very primitive back then.
g4ste 4 years ago
no, even recent videos to their songs are equally lame. They never had the cinematic vision thing down ...
like I stated before, I am a HUGE fan and have been to every show since Roll the Bones (my first concert), so I am allowed to critique :p
paragshah2112 3 years ago
Well, I doubt they direct the videos.
I like Subdivisions, Driven, and The Big Money.

@StKittsDave Yeah they have a number of bad videos but I would say most of them fall under mediocre. Plus they do have a couple of very good videos, Mystic Rhythms is one that comes to mind.

that was an amazing video. you really need to have a more open mind to really appreciate the work of Rush in the 80s and 90s.

I saw bits of the "Enemy Within" video in there. Great song, but I'm not much a Rush video fan. They always seem somewhat corny to me, especially "Time Stand Still" lol.
Does anyone know what 1001001 actually means in binary?
CKnoxW 4 years ago
1001001 means EGG...Hence the "egg" in the vice on the inside cover of the album...
Cheese71 4 years ago
um no - actually it means nothing since it's only 7 characters and not 8. You'd need 8 for a single character. If the last character was a zero then it'd mean ' and if it was a one then it'd mean "
Egg BTW is: 011001010110011101100111
