get a flyback from old t.v, get a driver and start from there. i did! got one coil working. only at 20% maybe. i used .004 dia wire for my secondery! 1341 turns! primary has 51 .0159 dia
Ok, I'm confused. So you can plug this into your wall and it generates 137 kHz of energy? I don't understand how it does that. And where does that energy go?
hello, my coil is a 4 inch pvc secondary, but it needs over 12 turns to be close to in tune, do you know how I can reduce this ammount? my toroid is home made, its much like a 3 inch dryer duct toroid but a little different, my cap bank is at 13 nf, with a 12kv 30 ma nst, and a static spark gap, 1/4 inch tubing for my primary... thanks
hello, I am building a tesla coil and am planning on running it in my basement, (its not as large, but close to yours). I am wondering if a steel support beam is enough ground for it to arc to, and for me to attach the bottom of my secondary windings to, thanks
yes I should be OK - Ive run one with a bunch of steel plates sitting on the ground (concrete) as an earth, poured water all over the ground first - just be safe - even tho that was not
That's a fairly good explanation, however it is now well accepted that the 1/4 wavelength explanation is not correct for Tesla Coils. Bill Wysock from TTR (maker of the world's largest Tesla Coil) wrote a good explanation explaining why that theory doesn't hold water; a quick Google search should net you the paper...
Im honored u watched it! Im a fan of powerlabs/your&Slavas work.Ive read Bills findings & I could'nt explain all in a 10M vid. Most ppl who view know a bit about TCs but not the full pupman level stuff.I did not go into skinEffect, transmissionLine or resonant rise/charging. just to keep to a med level.I had a uniprofessor tell me a TC is n1v1=n2v2 ie turns ratio txfmr-so at least I've taken it a step beyond that;)
Thanks :) Bill's 13M made the largest spark, at 55 feet, but Electrum is physically taller. I asked Bill this question (I consider him a friend and I worked with him for a year while I was working for kVA Effects) and appearently he's heard it one too many times, if you know what I mean ;)
Funny think was I lived in NZ for the first 27 years of my life and was into TCs/Oudil coils from about age 12 and never heard of the Electrum. There was a show called "thats fairly interesting" and they had a TC on there which was the only real NZ one I saw - Ive been to Griffith Observatory in 95 and 99 to see that coil Bill's worked on ;)
That is the best tutorial on the Tesla coil I've seen on video. You are the first one who has mentioned the metal top is really a capacitor in resonance with the secondary inductance. Why does the spark need to be quenched? Isn't the ionized arc like a switch in conduction that keeps the the primary LC resonance tank circuit oscillating?
yes but you want the spark to fire just on the peak of the AC cycle and not stay on (sustained by the supply) when the cap is charged to the peak ( sqrt(2)*Vrms) its got the most energy in it E=1/2cV^2 (double voltage 4x energy!) anywho you want it to fire at the max voltage and stop after the rf cycles ready for the next AC charge cycle
i gave you a five star because you're talking so far over my head i don't understand a thing you're talking about AND you're very good looking. Now what does this thing do? I know it gets electricity out of the earth or something, but can you use it? Is it practical for anything?
in a smaller form the principles are used in TVs and what not. In this form its just a hobby/side show attraction for big sparks - watch 'singing tesla coil' for a kind of practical application (public address)
guess so, primary cct can (hi Voltage and current(Amps) and low freq) Some tazer/stunguns have a TC of sorts in them - the secondary coil output spark of a TC is low current and high freq (look up skin effect) which both help negate its killing effects but still dangerous I expect
i cant see any useful application for tesla coil , and if it used as a weapon .. u cant control the big sparks coming out of it .. its randomly ... but it might works for border control.. but hey who wanna visit Russia .. still would it be possible if the crosser insulated his feet .. i mean make an open circuit with the ground .. will the crosser spend his life in Russia or will he be fried ... ??????
I think it would not matter if you insulated your feet. insulating your feet basically makes a capacitor between you and the ground. the load from a tesla shock would be so great that any small capacitance created on your feet would be insignificant. The towers to be used were said to be 300 ft tall! dont quote me though. That sounds ridiculous to me aswell :)
Large scale wireless power transmission is a good use. Teslas are not used for any purpose outside of the lab, but they've proven effective for transmitting power. i don't understand algerbra, so these important values won't make any sense to me. but thanks for instructions. you should get a patent but there seems to be a lot of these on ebay and youtube. it seems to be making a big influence on people as i told my brother i know a chap on youtube who has a predicting machine that tells you the value of fish and many other things and he won't stop laghing? i think he does'nt believe me. never mind though, i always did know better than everyone else.
Ive got a 2 electrode gap on a vacuum cleaner motor.B'cuz its about a 1" gap It must be the biggest loss of Q in my primary cct.I should make/buy a salient-pole synchronous rotary spark gap as its about the best/most efficient for ac input IMO.I did use 6 electrode quenched gaps but they caught fire and got too hot at 2.5-3KVA input power.Check out pupman - there is probably some way to cool them with fans etc but I'm impatient & just like to fire it up ASAP w/out filters or good gaps
Nikola Tesla (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Тесла) (10 July 1856 -- 7 January 1943) was an inventor, a mechanical and an electrical engineer. Born in Smiljan, Croatian Krajina, Austrian Empire, he was an ethnic Serb subject of the Austrian
you Brits....its pronounced the way it's spelled... a lu min um! four syllables NOT a lu min E um five syllables. you're as bad as our moronic President. He can't pronounce the word nuclear to save his life. Cool video though!
To me a TC is just a RF resonant transformer, I personally don't buy into any of Tesla crazy free energy magic etc. Not to detract from Tesla as a great inventor though - Newton had crazy theory's too about little men (himolecules or something)
My primary is not bifilar (its aflat/pancake that looks the same)
I think Tesla made bifilar secondaries to increase self-capacitance. Counter/anti-series bifilar used in wirewounds almost remove self-inductance.
just because I don't personally believe in something that does not mean I begrudge people or aliens, spooks, wizards, goblins, dragons, fairies, gods, ewoks, goddesses, deities, monsters, cylons, elves, gollums, pugnogs, nebapers, scabores that do.

Hey! well I finaly unpotted my transformer with success! thanks for all your help. Now im gunna build an 8 in diameter coil, with 4 mots.
I just had a quick question. what kind of spark gap do you use?
thanks!
teddybear114 3 years ago
Ive got a 2 electrode gap on a vacuum cleaner motor.B'cuz its about a 1" gap It must be the biggest loss of Q in my primary cct.I should make/buy a salient-pole synchronous rotary spark gap as its about the best/most efficient for ac input IMO.I did use 6 electrode quenched gaps but they caught fire and got too hot at 2.5-3KVA input power.Check out pupman - there is probably some way to cool them with fans etc but I'm impatient & just like to fire it up ASAP w/out filters or good gaps

awesome. I wouldn't have ever noticed had you denied it to the end.

from wikipedia
Nikola Tesla (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Тесла) (10 July 1856 -- 7 January 1943) was an inventor, a mechanical and an electrical engineer. Born in Smiljan, Croatian Krajina, Austrian Empire, he was an ethnic Serb subject of the Austrian

Did you fart in this video at 0.12 seconds?
baggie00001 3 years ago
yes, in my experience the only gas that effectively combats the ozone is methane (Also gaseous shit molecules bind covalently to ions)
This is explained fully in any bible eg king james, VIZ or OK magazine

Yeah, America doesn't decide how everything in the god damn world is done.
Who invented English? Oh, right, the English.
(I know, the video guy is Australian.)
Stop making a fool of yourself.

You say either and I say either, You say neither and I say neither
Either, either Neither, neither, Let's call the whole thing off.
You like potato and I like potahto, You like tomato and I like tomahto

To deal with people asking to see it run, try placing a link to the video where you show it running, at the top of your description.
How does Tesla's coil relate to his work on free, or, radiant energy?
Is the inductor at the bottom a self-inducting bifilar coil?
renderrob 3 years ago
To me a TC is just a RF resonant transformer, I personally don't buy into any of Tesla crazy free energy magic etc. Not to detract from Tesla as a great inventor though - Newton had crazy theory's too about little men (himolecules or something)
My primary is not bifilar (its aflat/pancake that looks the same)
I think Tesla made bifilar secondaries to increase self-capacitance. Counter/anti-series bifilar used in wirewounds almost remove self-inductance.
I'll take your advise on the links-cheers
