@AkilahAmazight Roma hate being called Gypsy, its kind of a negative name that "everyone else" calls them. In my country Ciganska and gypsy are same thing and it is associated with dirty thief
Some have disowned the word as it's a misnomer (it comes from the incorrect old assumption that we came from Egypt, when in fact the Romani almost certainly spread out from India about 1500 years ago), some haven't because it's more identifiable to the general population than "Romani". Some just don't care, just as some people of Native American don't care if they're called "Indians" or not. In a widely varying culture like that of the Romani, there is no universal standard.
"Being a Gypsy" means that you have a Romani ethnic background.
"Gypsy" is not a "state of mind", a fashion statement, or a lifestyle. It's an ethnicity. Saying that "being a Gypsy" is a state of mind is no different than saying that anyone could be Asian or Native American or African because of "state of mind" as opposed to via bloodlines.
It's just not so. Please stop perpetuating the mistaken notion that "Gypsies" are fictional characters or a lifestyle choice.
p.s. you see it alot with tribal fusion troupes using the word "gypsy" in their names -- actual gypsy people sometimes take offense because they just want to see their native dancing, and instead see a tribal fusion troupe.
i don't think anyone sets out to intentionally exploit someone else's heritage, but that's not to say there can't be some less-than-thoughtful fusion dancing. these ladies are professional, though, and have loads of time to spend on research, actually going to the native places these dances come from, etc etc. i think it's just important to say "this is FUSION." fusion = blending. sometimes people don't make the distinction and there can be confusion there.
That's why I said I didn't feel that way all the time. It's just a beginner's concern. I really don't want to step on anyone's toes. I studied ethnomusicology and anthropology in college. I have so much respect for everyone. I would like to see more innovation from the people I know are creative enough to do something of their own. I do think this is very beautiful and well put together. Thanks a lot for your civility!
fusion...it's a coming together of different styles/cultures in a modern setting. just like people that are 1/2 something and 1/2 something else....they're a fusion of two cultures. well, heck, never mind...
I don't think you understood what I was saying and I sympathize with your defensiveness. Thanks for the response anyway. Also, making bank was a dumb term of phrase to use. Sorry I offended you.
This is not an attack. I don't always feel this way. I'm just wondering if anyone else feels like americans are exploiting the artistry of other cultures? I mean, we're all humans and have the right to express whatever we want, but if we take something, call it our own, and make bank, isn't that stealing? I'm just a little confused today... any help?
@tinashriller everything is stealing because NOTHING is original. Think about this: America is the melting pot of the world. So many of our founding people came from other countries, other civilizations, other ways of life. Those people brought with them their culture, their superstitions, their foods and so much more. To steal is to take from without asking that which is rightfully someone elses. Stealing something such as a cultural dance is impossible. It belongs to no particular ONE person.
I think they're called thai dancing fingernails. If you google it you'll probably come across quite a few stockists. After seeing this vid I want some myself......probably put my eye out knowing me tho! lol
So wonderful to see a new Kami. Sabrina and you are so well matched and synched! Kami! Nice to see the a dance with the accessorized fingers! Are those things sharp?
