All the so-called music lovers, who just want "everyone to stop arguing and just enjoy the music," must stop inculcating their assumption that "all music is equal" to the unwitting majority. It simply is not. Music criticism begins with this realization. Eventually, we must be able to say that Muse is better than Radiohead or Radiohead better than Muse. When we just throw up our hands before the idol of our "enjoyment", we all lose.
George Orwell, genious don't you read? they make you read this in Elementary School. i love this song live better, so much energy! didn't you read the other comments. it's obvious...
@brurucy Holy shit dumbass. I fucking love Radiohead and this song. I totally get the whole 2+2=5 thing. Its from 1984 which I have read. Its a fucking comment.
I`m beginning to suspect that well viewed popular movies seen by the group the video is made for get a ratio of about 50 likes to 1 dislike. I have seen one Boards of Canada with a ratio 330:1 but thats the best I`ve seen so far. I liked the star system better but even that didnt work...
I agree. It's a great book. The ending is so sad... I thought Smith would join the resistance, but it was all a lie. And after all, they brainwash him... it's very sad....
His protagonist Winston Smith, uses the phrase to wonder if the State might declare "two plus two equals five" as a fact; he ponders whether, if everybody believes in it, does that make it true?
Essentially if everyone tells a lie often enough then everybody will eventually believe that it's true.
@fredceilo it's horrifying that you missed the whole symbolic nature of that lyric. But I guess it's normal in this totalitarian society we live in, and it's suppression on art. I think he's talking about the irrationality that education provides people.
@Kperson123 The song is about people in power today. It's basically saying the government can say whever they want and we'll just take it in as the truth. Hence the name; two plus two is five. Watch the official music video carefully and you might get it better.
I didn't understand the concept until I finally got around to reading 1984 when I was 13. Before that, it was just a funny song name, but it's really interesting how they referenced this.

We shouldn't, however, impose how we feel about these things on everyone and call them ass hats if they don't back us up. (clearly I am aware of the irony there.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Radiohead has a handful of great songs....so does coldplay what makes coldplay better is that radiohead has a lot of outrageously horrible songs and not one of coldplay's songs are bad;]
I don't know why you compare Coldplay with Radiohead. Coldplay is a far too overated band. Radiohead is the same as watching a Tarantino movie. Not a lot of people like it but its fucking genious.
Radiohead are to Modern Music what Leonardo da Vinci was to Italian Renaissance Art. They go far beyond being mere musicians, songwriters, & performers. They've become cultural mirrors, producing Art that not only defines the very culture surrounding it but simultaneously & unabashedly reveals to that culture everything that's wonderful and horribly wrong with it.
Muse and Radiohead are two of my all-time favorites, but saying Muse is ripping them off is ridiculous. Their music is actually quite different. They are both incredible bands. And when it comes down to it, see Radiohead live and then see Muse. Muse blows them away.
I've done it. Seen 'em both live. They're both amazing. No rock band who's come into existence since Radiohead hasn't been influenced by them in 'some' way. They're 2 different generations of Artists who cannot realistically be placed beside one another and judged fairly. They're two different animals. Arguing about who's 'better' is just opinion. So if u simply wanted your opinion stated for the records, I guess "well done" then.
I think the world is a far better place w/"both" bands in it.
Just stop comparing bands with Radiohead. Its a helpless matters. You can say Muse sucks but hell you just can't listen Radiohead 24/7. It would be my death someday.

fredceilo 1 year ago
at fungusuarus and fredceilo:
2+2 CAN equal 5.
If you times any number by 0, then it becomes 0. soo...
doesn't (4x0)=(5x0)? and if you divide both sides by 0 then you get 4=5.
so, as 2+2=4, and 4=5, logically, 2+2 can equal 5.
but seriously- not really the point of the song is it?

@truthemulator I actually agree with that. However, what I implied by making such a statement was not that only the beauty be recognized, but that we, you know, talk about it. I hate seeing flame wars break out over music. We can express our interests and disinterests, that's cool that we can, and we should allow others that right. We shouldn't, however, impose how we feel about these things on everyone and call them ass hats if they don't back us up. (clearly I am aware of the irony there.)

Radiohead has a handful of great songs....so does coldplay what makes coldplay better is that radiohead has a lot of outrageously horrible songs and not one of coldplay's songs are bad;]
yehudaful1 1 year ago
@yehudaful1 Did you just say Coldplay are better than RH? You fail at life.

Yes, Radiohead is an incredibly intriguing Tarantino flick, but I'd have to say Coldplay is at least a Speilberg film

RADIOHEAD and COLDPLAY are the Best!! ; )
Sebastian0093 1 year ago

Muse blows them away.
kylwntr 1 year ago
