James Burton just plays the DAYLIGHTS out of this in every live version I've heard; not laid-back, as on the record. Live or studio version, it's a wonderful, soulful song that showcases Elvis' passionate singing.
I'm never disappointed in any version of Suspicious Minds. I don't care if it's live the first night or the 100th time he's performed it. Studio version or live it's always, always good and one of my favorites.
From what I hear Elvis did not want to go to the studio to record,so the studio came to Graceland many times and every one had a hard time to get Elvis to record a song.
@Aboutjohn747 that was only true in his last years when the song selection sucked and in the 60's when he was stuck making them lame ass movies that he hated. when he was given great stuff to work with he was all business. his best years in the recording studio were 1954-1963, 1966-1971. sometimes he would have some sucess like in 1972 and 1973 and 1975 but the songs he really wanted to do werent there. he pretty much hated nashville or los angeles and ny where the song writers gave him nada
i think its a damn shame that there are lesser recording artists out there today hitting number 1 while there is so much unreleased material elvis recorded still in the vaults. epe and ftd should comercially rellease what hey have and promote it. it could give elvis a number 1 record. cstanchik
@Zecalran Don't be daft, not all artists are great and unique, unless you mean true artists, but there are not many of them about today, objectively speaking, you only have to turn on the tv, pc, or radio to see and hear there are few artists around sadly.
suspiscious minds was elvis last number 1 record. it wasnt his fault as colonel parker placed his greed before elvis creatiity. there were many quality songs elvis could have recorded but wwasnt able to do s because wanted the royalties up front. he was the BERNARD MADOFF of his time. cstanchik
No, it wasn't his last no. 1 record. He had several on the country charts in the 70s. Moody Blue and Way Down were his last ones.
In fact, Elvis had 14 different no 1 albums on the Billboard charts - not only 10 as it is always said. He had 9 no 1 albums on the pop charts during his life time plus another 7 on the country charts - if you count the Aloha album only once (Aloha was no 1 on Country and Pop) he had 14 altogether during his lifetiem. Check Joel Whitburn's Billboard statistics.
You can definately hear on this early live version that Elvis was more faithfull to the original studio recording. He had yet defined the faster up-beat live version he had develop later on with time! Very interesting to hear how is sounded then and how it evolved later! Thanks for posting!
elvis is the man this song owns any pop music today

I have been a big Elvis fan since 1955,
but I don't care for this picture at all.
Its a grainy black and white that does
not show what an attractive man he was.
To me the pose looks like he's
smoking a joint.
After 7 1/2 minutes this gets boring
pornguy2 2 years ago
lol it does kinda look like he's tokin on a j..

@phonegalfitness
It wasn't a j. He was smoking a cigar.

whatever, everbody smoke joint in a life, that's the way it is for Elvis in the 70's
Long live the king !
