  • Good explanation, and good playing too!

  • easiest and best machine for the money if you know what you're doing. I did a polished song on this thing and told my friends it was done at a pro studio and they believed it.

  • Hey, we have the recording all set and we're trying to put it onto a cd. We've tried the trim function and we can't seem to get it to work so we can burn it. Could you help us?

  • hi mate, i got one of these around 4 years ago , did u manage to do a prt 2 like u say in this vid cos really want to get the drum thing goin. thanks

  • wheres part 2 ??

  • Hi how do i record the drums and bass onto a track. i dont understand the manual.i have a zoom mrs1608

  • @elvismemphisgs hey..let me know if you still need help i might be able to help ya

  • how do you get the drum machine beat without the bass attached?

  • I picked one of these up off of Craigslist, thanks for sharing! Looking forward to recording live bands.

  • hi! thanks for the step by step video it was very useful. can u also do a video on zoom r16? want to compare the two units. thanks

  • I own this studio and it works GREAT! I too am a drummer and yes you can easily mic up a drum kit. It has 8 inputs. Once you filled up your inputs.... hit the 8 track recording button and turn on all your mic'd tracks and away you go.

  • can i record with this with addictive drums without going into pro tools?

  • Mate G'day from Australia, great vid, my question is this. We have a Yamaha desk mg16/6fx can I ind sends from the desk to this one and record that? I want to capture the live feel of our band BobKats... Cheers.

  • I wonder? Does anyone know how well this would work with an MPC 2000xl?

  • How can I record more than one thing at the same time. I want to record drums. Is it possible?

  • I would like to record 4 vocals, guitar and the keyboard at the same time on Zoom HD16. How to set all those buttons to record mode???

My problem is that I have no idea how to turn more than 2 buttons to record mode. When I press one to red (recording mode) it's OK but when I press next one in line for multiple tracks recording to red, the previous ones turn off automatically. How do you turn them all to red (recording) without getting some of them turned off themselves.

  • i pushed in the v48 button but no sound went into the mic when i spoke into it

could it be the microphone cable or something else?

  • Easily done. Just hit the button that says 8 track recording, mic up your drumset, turn all the inputs on and then turn on all the tracks to record (red) . This will make each mic go to the corresponding track. Hit record.. Before you master, Go into each track and EQ it...add reverb or effect and there you go.

  • I have been waiting over a year for part 2, where is it?

  • I really apolozie everyone, I have changed careers and am no longer in the music store. I do plan on doing some more videos, but it has been very difficult to find time. However, I am an insurance agent now with Farmer's Insurance, so if anyone lives in indiana and needs help with their insurance let me know. Also, my new name on here is nbcguitar so you can find me there a little easier. I will get some videos up I hope soon. Again, I apologize for the HUGE delay...

  • Can I record a live recording setup with this easily enough...micing up guitar, bass amps, drums etc. and then lay vocals over the top of that? and as far as vocals go, what is the quality like recording straight through the hd16? Does it require a high quality condenser to get crisp vocals, would I be wasting money to buy a $700 mic for a recorder like this?

  • Sorry guys, Im no longer at the Music Store, so I don't get on here as often. What you do is you hit the button that says 8 track recording. This allows all 8 inputs to act independently of each other. You can then record, and go in and EQ each track the way you want it. So you can beef up the kick by dropping some mids and adding lows and maybe a little high end click. Also, don't be afraid to use the reverb and delay controls on your drums. It can really bring them out or set a mood.

  • Recording live is really cool actually. You can do it a couple of ways. If your band is completely miked through a soundboard, chances are that it is probably subgrouped. Meaning : One fader controls all the drum faders, one controls all the vocals, one controls guitars, and one controls the bass and keys. You come out of the subgroup outs on the board with regular 1/4 inch cables, and run them into individual channels on the HD16. Hit the button on top that says 8 track recording.

  • hey - was wondering if you could talk about or possibly make a video showing how to use the HD 16 as an interface and hook it up to your computer

  • would a mxl-4000 work on the HD16 need to know have the hd16 was thinking about getting the mxl-4000?

    LET me know please

  • Again, sorry so late to respond. The large diaphragm condensers will work fine with the HD16, just push in the little 48v button for phantom power and you are good to go.

  • @TheMusiciansDen can i use this with a daw

  • Thanks Aaron,my first post ever on internet.Vidhelped a LOT.Did pt 2 of HD 16 get made ?Self teachin on pc an HD 16.I,m guessing Zoom ,if you,ve not time w will answer,"How to do a v take ?So nice to see something, someone friendly, pleasent giving something FREE.Well done, more please.Terry London

  • Is it possible to use the HD16 as a normal audio interface straight into the computer with USB?

I own an HD16 but it's currently at my friend's house.

I want to be able to record my tracks through the HD16 right onto Cubase instead of recording on the HD16 and then transferring the files on my computer.

Is that possible in any way?

  • part 2>?????

  • This is a great video! It's too bad this series wasn't continued.

  • when you record vocals on the zoom hd , do you have to light up two fader buttons to make it stereo ? -basically if you have a mic , must you use two track faders to record vocals? i bought a Fostex mr8 and i want to throw it out the freaking window because even though its 8 tracks you must light two tracks, bacicly makeing it a FOUR TRACK! - any help would be appreciated . thanks .

  • @Fo0dStamps i knew nothing about it when i started messing around with my hd16 and tried alot of different things... clearly i still have learning to do if i'm looking up videos like this... but no, i found no difference in the sound when recording vocals to a single or multiple tracks

  • part two?

  • does anyone know if this recorder can be used as an interface with cubase le 4. if so how?

  • I have and love the HD16. I also have Cubase 5 and a pc (Windows Vista), I need tips on how to use the control suface, DAW.

  • Can you do a video using the drum machine on the HD 16? please and thanks.

  • R.I.P. ZOOM HD16. :-(

    It is discontinued by ZOOM.

That's why I cannot buy one (I'm in Europe).

  • Can anybody tell me how long you can recored using all 8 tracks at the same time on the hd16 a ? as i want to recored my band live for a 2 hour set

  • if you dont have a whole lot of projects on the hard drive then as far as I can tell it will record a very long time....I just recorded a 45 min long live set and i have made several projects since then...it should do it easily

  • what speaker are they? they sound great? any ideas?

  • those are also Samson Medio O-N-E- speakers. I bought the 5a and they are little ass kickers, i love this entire set up, wouldn't use anything else that i've seen. Till you've seen it and used it you cannot believe everything this unit will do.

  • does any one know how good this is for using in recording a drum kit with mics??

    thanxs

  • it is awesome if you keep it under eight mics. the level of control through each mic is very articulate

  • p art 2

  • i gotta say man. Nice solo. Good lines

  • this guy has style :D

  • PART 2 !?!?!

  • Is it possible to adjust the volumes of each track and have the adjustments show up in the final mix as they were performed? Example: If I were to turn an acoustic guitar track all the way down for two or three measures then turn it back up. Is it possible to make that adjustment show up in the final mix?

  • yes, it's an amazing unit for the price

  • yes, you do that as you're recording your master track.

  • This is BY FAR AND HANDS DOWN the best instructional video on the HD16 I have seen. I can't wait for the next one, thank you so much, I had no idea that I could edit my effects till I read teh above comment. 5******

  • Come on, make a part 2

  • where is part 2

  • Aaron, when are you going to add part II of the tutorial?

  • my instruction manual came in another language...lol. Part 2 would be great mate, cheers for the vid.

  • G'day Aaron,

    Just bought one of these.

Thanks for this lesson... I really look forward to part two (2).

    Cheerios

    Bridie O'

  • hey this is brevin i take lessons from musicians den thanks for showing me this video

  • Is there an instructional video on dvd on this anywhere? if not please make one, it would be such a big help, as this video is. I have this unit and love it but I am nowhere near understanding it.

  • very good instructional hanks alot!

  • OK i have this problem, why is it my guitar sustain seems to be much longer on normal amps but in HD 8 Zoom,it seems to get a signal cut, how to eliminate this signal cut, thank you?

  • what brand are those small monitors?

  • Samson Media ONE

  • Can we have the next tutorial please that was very instructional.....

  • which is better?!! this product or boss BR 1600cd ?

  • excellent..many thanks..i bought one after seeing this..too bad i dont live in IN..sure hope you do the next lesson!

  • I am seriously considering purchasing this product. My question is...During the final mixdown to the master can you pan the various tracks?

  • Question : -----can you Please explain why the first 8tracks are single lit Leds ,,, meanwhile the last four faders have duel lit leds?

  • The last four are stereo channels. for example 9/10. When the two inputs are lit, you can dual mike something, for example on a vocalist you could sing through a dynamic mic (sm58) and a Condenser at the same time. Or you could have two mics on two guitar amps, or a close mic and a distant mic. By hitting the track parameter button you can pan from one to the other, as well as control the virtual tracks for each. You can also just use one input by turning one of the two off.

  • Ive got one, but i cant figure out how to record to tracks 9-16, and mix them too..

  • All you have to do when doing one track at a time, turn on your input and then turn the track status button on 9 - 16 to red, hit record and you will have recorded to the track lit up red.

  • great video. i got the hd 8 and i want to know if you can record 2 tracks at same time if so how, when i try to select both the other one goes off

  • To record two tracks or more simultaneously, you need to hit the button that says 8 track recording, up next to the inputs. Now when you turn the inputs on "say inputs 1 and 7. When you record those will automatically go to tracks 1 and 7. You can actually record up to 8 tracks simultaneously, this is great for recording live bands or drumset all at once!

  • can you use external effects/amp or do you have to use the ones on the machine?

  • By all means mic up your amp and use your effects. The internal amp models sound great, but nothing beats having your own personal tone on a recording. Experiment with mic placement on your amp, as well as dual miking and distant miking. Use your imagination and make it your own!

  • great video, thank you...i ordered mine today. please put the drum vid up soon x x

  • I've had one of these for a short while now, but I've been too busy to really throw some music onto it. I've got everything set up now, and after watching this helpful video, I can't wait to get stuck in and start recording some great sounding tracks. Thanks for the video, it's very informative and handy, especially for a short video!

  • If you are recording with 6 tracks: 2 for guitars, 1 for bass, 2 for electric drums and 1 for vocals - can you assign different effects to each of the channels, or do you have to have the same insert effect for all the instruments? If you do, can you change the effects after you have recorded the tracks? Thank you. (Please ask if this doesn't make sense!)

  • this nice and all butt you are much stuck with the sounds where in you can do anythang you whant

  • Actually, when you find a sound close to what you like, just hit edit. You can adjust your gain, equalization, add or subtract effects, change the tone, the cabinet, any number of things, not to mention after you record it. You can use the bounce function and the insert effect to use other effects or mic simulations to change the sound. Not to mention, just the good ole miking up a good guitar amp and letting it rip. Part 2 is coming,

  • cool ty i thank i need to save a get one than right now i have digitech rp 150 usb and adobe audition 1.5 with wht you showing and wht i got now would be nice ty again

  • Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2! Part 2!

Sorry I just really want to see it!

  • How can i record tracks 9-16????

  • what distortion settings did u use for your rhythm, I just got this recorder and I cant get anything that heavy and clean...Im using a Gibson Explorer

  • I cant remember the exact ones I used in tis video. I think this is right. I know the lead was one called MultiLd, I used I think the clean with light chorus on the clean part. And the 1959MS for the basic distorted rhythm part.

  • Here is another suggestion for your sound derek, make sure input source is input, hit shift+ insert effects, arrow down til you reach distortion, and then use the jog wheel to listen to different dist settings. When you find one that is close, hit edit and arrow over to what you want to change (pre, comp, effect, etc) then arrow down and use the jog wheel to turn things up or down, do this while playing to find your sound. Good luck

    Aaron

  • hi there,

this is the best demonstration .i cant wait for another one

    thank you.

  • hi there ,

ive had a zoom 8 for a year and its still in the box , is it much the same as the 16 to use , hell you make it look so damn easy

    cheers

  • good job cant wait for the next one

  • I have the MRS 802 and love it. I am thinking of upgrading to the MRS 1608 or the HD-16. Is the HD16 worth it over a used 1608? Also, I haven't been able to do starts, stops and fills with the drum machine in the MRS 802.

  • The HD16 is definitely worth upgrading to. The meter bridge is great, plus having 80 gigs of memory is awesome. Its pretty easy to program your drums as well.

If you want one, we sell them at the Musician's Den, and I have one in stock ready to ship. I always include a couple of cheat sheets to help my customers get going a little quicker.

    Aaron

  • heya, im looking at doing my bands recording on one of those bad boys, i was wondering, can you record drums on the without having to use the presets on the product, and if so how?

    All the best

  • No problem doing drums, Just hit the 8 track recording button. Plug your drums in, turn all the inputs you are using on, and set all the corresponding track buttons to red(rec) Then record. You can hit Shift+Pattern and choose the metronome pattern usually 4/4 set your tempo, and you have a great click track to play along with. Then once you EQ your drums and get them mixed, bounce them to a stereo track like 15/16 that way you can open up the other tracks for the rest of your band.

  • how exactly do you get just the metronome? i cant find it.

  • Go to the pads up on the top right. Hit

Shift+Pattern, Then Turn the Jog wheel to the left til it says PTN 510 Metro44, this is a 4/4 time metronome, hit play and turn up the rythym fader to hear it, then hit tempo and adjust the jog wheel up or down til you find the tempo you want!!

  • Please do part 2!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey guys, still working on part 2. Sorry its taking so long, I've been real busy with the store and the band and all that, and haven't had time to do much video lately. The next part will show you how to use the drum machine in the zoom to make a complete song, with starts, stops, and fills. I will try to get it done soon.

  • can you connect 3 guitars and record them at the same time in 3 different channels??

  • yeh i got it

  • what do you mean i got it??

  • i mean yeh u can and i know because have 1

  • Just hit the button that says 8 track recording up near the inputs. Then plug in your guitars either from the direct outs on the amps, or mic the amps. Then turn on the inputs for what you are recording. Then turn the status buttons for the corresponding track faders to red. (if you are using inputs 1-2-3, they will be recorded on tracks 1-2-3 respectively), after its plugged and your gain/trim level is set where it isn't clipping. Hit record+play and start recording.

  • ill be waiting for part 2

  • i wish the zoom had a sequencer

  • can someone explain to me how to bounce on the hd 16 i dont get it at all.

  • Here's how to bounce. Make sure all of the tracks you want to bounce are lit up green. Hit the Bounce button, Turn the track you want to bounce to to RED. Hit play and listen to it and adjust the levels of the tracks you are bouncing, when you get your levels set, go back to zero, then hit Record and Play simultaneous. After its done, go back to zero, press the status button to green on the track you bounced to, and listen to how it turned out. Hope this helped!

  • Nice Demo! Any $529 B-stock/demos available?

  • Thanks so much for the dem! I just purchased mine today based on your video and can't wait to get into it. I am very much lookingh forward to your next demo showing how to create drum tracks. Thanks again, great job.

  • these are sickkk

  • I ordered mine today. I should have it by Wednesday. Can't wait to get some new stuff recorded! :)

  • I have a Zoom HD16 and I love it!!

  • Please do part 2!!!

  • there is no undo function, but there is a swap function that saves the track you're editing temporarily on the hard drive, if you make a mistake you can restore the track and start over. they really should include an undo function though.

  • Very helpful tutorial - thanks :)

I had the Zoom MRS-1608 which I liked a lot. Zoom recorders are very easy to understand and use. I might just buy this little beauty!

  • Thank you so much for the help.

Just one problem... i have burned the cd now and everything did go perfectly.

But ... when i put the CD in my computer it sais " No CD "... cant find it / scan it...

    Any clue what this is?

    Thanks. Mads!

  • You have to put the disk back in and choose the "finalize" setting. I had that same problem. It explains it in the book though. I would be lost without that thing lol

  • Oh thank you man! :)

  • You can tell from my vid response that I've managed to make some decent recording but never tried the master effects. I'll play with that. Thanks!

  • Hi there!

I just bought one yesterday so thanks a lot for the tutorial. I wish you could make the part 2 soon cause it's easy to learn this way. Thanks!

  • At last! A tutorial for the Zoom HD16.

    Thank You!!!!

    Look fwd to part 2 & 3 & 4 etc :-)

  • I believe I'll be getting one of these now. You've convinced me.

  • Excellent Tutorial.I Look forward to Part 2

  • Hello!

    okey, example:

If i record a guitar solo, and i start to play wrong and do mistakes, when i record... how do i regret/delete/remove that solo, to try it again?

    Thanks! Mads.

  • The easiest way is to just stop. Hit Zero (to go back to beginning, or just rewind to before you do the solo, and then re record. Another thing is to set the recorder using the auto punch in and out function, this allows you to program the recorder to start recording at a very specific time and stop at a specific time, this is great if you have an amazing solo and you just flub a couple of notes. Look up in the manual the auto punch function, it is incredibly useful for this problem.

  • I'm getting one of these things in about 5 days, and I can't wait! I have a Mac and run Pro Tools LE, but I find myself not using it much, because I have young kids, and it can be time consuming. I have a Boss Micro BR, and that thing is really cool. I use it a lot. So, I figured that something simple and easy like this would help motivate me, since I can do everything right there on the machine.

Question... where is Part 2 of this video? It says this one is Part 1, but I don't see Part 2?

  • Part 2 is coming soon. The store has been very busy lately, so I haven't had time to do another yet. I havent decided to do a quick tutorial on the drum machine, or on a few editing functions. This thing does so much its hard to do it in just one video. And I am still learning things myself. I will get one done soon I hope.

    Thanks

  • You can. You can pull tracks right off a cd using the cd drive and put it right onto a track. Then... you can take a section of that track or the whole thing and loop it. Or of course you can just use your cd track. Another way is also to just use an audio out from a cd player into an input on the recorder. A customer of mine is using it to take 8 tracks from an old reel to reel recorder to the HD16 this way. Works great!

  • hey, do you know if it's possible to use a loop cd with the zoom. I have some loop cds and am trying to decide if i can use them without an instrument on this recorder

  • Master tracking is pretty easy, I kinda jumped thru this tutorial pretty quick. Make sure input source is Master, Shift+Insert and choose mastering, choose the mastering effect u want, exit back to main menu, then press the button above master fader til its red, and then hit record+play. make sure your levels are where you want them, and then listen to your master track (hit button above master til its green). There you go. Good luck guys.

  • thank you very much

how do u master a track?

ive looked at the book and it just confused me

  • he explains it shortly at 4:50 and up ... i think...

  • oh whoops

i skimmed through the vid and completely missed that

    thanks!

  • Thank you very much !! !!! :D
