No need to compare him to Coltrane or Ayler, although I suppose calling him the greatest Free Jazz saxophonist WILL raise such questions as "WELL ISNT AYLER WAY BETTER?"
Either way, a lot closer to Ayler in sound than Coltrane (abrasive n beautiful, unlike Coltrane who was much free-flowing in his chaos), but in terms of what he expresses, he's far different. Ayler n Coltrane usually went for a sort of spirituality on a greater level, but Abe's is a lot more personal than far-reaching. Lovely.
There are some artists which go beyond the attempt to relate and compare without misunderstanding by the accuser. Take Abe for what you hear and don't relate or compare or else you will miss it. Music has never been about music. All of that is in the mind. The heart is the origin of the expression. Before you relate the superficial colors to everyone else and critique him, try letting his notes destroy any thought that comes to mind.
@ssleb Well don't get me wrong, I said 'one of'. I love a lot of free jazz sax, Coltrane being another fave, but Kaoru is definitely up there. Especially the Winter 1972 album. See if you can get a hold of that, it should give you a good feel for the range of his awesomenes...
One of the all time solo sax gods for sure. What flows out of him is just pure searing emotional honesty, so beautiful and true that it's hard to take sometimes, as an earlier poster said. And of course, any emotional honesty will also contain harshness, spots of rage. That's just part of beauty.
All time? Doubtfully. You're dismissing Coltrane's religious and emotional melodies for this? What about Brecker's soul?
Speed is not skill. This is random noise as far as most saxophonists are concerned. He uses the same rhythm over and over and over and over ad nauseaum.
His tone is fresh though, I have to give him that.
with such violent playing, one would imagine he died of a lung disorder, and not a drug overdose. Abe always reminds me of Chet, two greats whose drug problem never affected their talent on their instrument of choice.
this isn't even that difficult I mean it's amazing playing if that's all you think about it's totally easy to listen to and enjoy . . . it's not like the whole piece is him just blowing as hard and loud as he can he is playing plenty of fantastic music here.
i do find this music difficult sometimes. it burns when you listen, like scolding water or something. and it is powerful, truly - yet i rarely find myself prepared; like, i dig the purity of his playing and way it's presented, yet something holds me back. ah, another year perhaps.

he is on par with Braxton in dexterity. i feel this recording is more sincere than most of Braxton's work though.

@drum1953 Chet's drug addiction never affected his talent? Didn't he pawn all his instruments to buy heroin?
