Songs like this are why Elton is so great. This song - and, other than Daniel and Crockodile Rock, the rest of the album received zero airplay. This song is the most sophisticated song on the album.
In the early 70's to the mid 80' I worked for WEA Records (not Elton Johns label). He recorded for MCA Records at that time. However, Don't Shoot Me was a huge record for him.
Bernie and Elton wrote a song with very similar subject matter about a year later for Kiki Dee's "Loving and Free" album. That song's called "Lonnie and Josie", and it sort of combines the feel of this song with "Me and Bobbie McGee".
This was the first song I listened to in this Album.. that was a long time back.. but because of the amazing quality of the music..It still stays fresh. Thanks for posting this
i said bye to my pop when i was a teenager, wow, time flies and we die sooner that we think. The HIGHWAY LOOKED LIKE IT NEVER DID - cuts like a blade...
This is without a doubt my favorite Elton John song of all time. It takes me back to my youth everytime I hear it. A happier time for me. I wish I could go back and be that young and carefree again.
This track sends shivers down my spine, truly one of the best album tracks he's recorded !! 1973 was the year for him, what with this and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Takes me back to being a child, listening on my father's lap. He's not around anymore so it's an emotional attachment I have with Elton's music.
So this is where Billy Joel's "Big Shot" came from. Hmmm....

This would be Elton's "Norwegian Wood", because it's a love balled with a sitar.
Davey Johnstone had to have been as influenced by Ravi Shankar as much as George Harrison was.

One of my biggest regrets in life is when I was 19 in 1973, that I did'nt take the advice of this song, just go "West to the sea."
