Fools, Muddy Waters and BB Kind didn't and don't play a thousand notes a minute, they are "simple", and geniuses. Anyone who rates Alex Lifeson above Robbie doesn't know music
@tdawg1294 this is from the Rock of Ages concert New Years eve 1971/72. Would have been an awesome show. First live performance for the horn section featuring Howard Johnson.
I don't think you are following what I am talking about. I said that Robbie has better "phrasing" than John. That means the WAY he plays notes and chords and the WAY he writes the music to go with a song. I am not talking about blues chops or how many notes he can hit in a solo. Robbie writes his guitar parts so that the guitar sings the song. I made my comment on the Rolling Stone list because I thought it a bit of an over reaction to say Robbie is mediocre at best.
@CapeBass508 Rolling Stone also put Robertson ahead of Dickie Betts (which is a travesty), Bruce Springsteen ahead of Alex Lifeson, James Hetfield ahead of Dimebag Darrell, the guy from U2 ahead of Muddy Waters, and Johnny Ramone (the king of down strumming power chords) ahead of ALL of them. Needless to say, I don't value their opinion much on ranking guitarists. Robbie himself even said that he doesn't do anything difficult. In this video he's just going back and forth between G and C.
To the person who commented "pure southern soul", The Band was all Canadian except Levon. And to the guy who compared The Band the CCR, you are waaaaay off. Dont get me wrong, CCR is one of the best ever and one of my personal favs, but the musical abillity of the band was unmatched at that time, also, Fogerty couldnt hold a candle to Robbie when it comes to song writing and guitar phrasing.
@CapeBass508 I agree that The Band was more musically talented overall, but to say that John Fogerty couldn't hold a candle to Robbie Robertson's guitar phrasing is just ridiculous. Robertson's guitar playing was mediocre at best. His song writing is where he shined.
Sadly, no. *see comment from faribell* I wouldn't be opposed to seeing the survivors get together with a few others to have a few more gigs, though. But Levon is already past 70 and I think Garth Hudson is older than he is, so .....
But yeah, I really wish we could see them get back together for one more farewell....
seek the obvious. this a warmup to rock of ages. the best band live album . its they're hey day new year 70-71. the best horn men in nyc? how you got last waltz from this is comical. any levon fan near the east coast who hasn't been to a midnight ramble must go
This song in total is beyond amazing, but I dare you to try to try to just focus on the drumming and singing as a unit. Only then can you you truly appreciate the god that is Levon Helm.
Levon Helm is one of the last living legends of that great era of music. Guy has had a tough life at times whether due to illness or life "on the road" and yet he is still knocking out great tunes & steady rythyms at the grand age of 71.....Rock On Levon!!!!Your the best!
Great video, but the audio is from the film 'The Last Waltz' released in 1978. It is the first song of them playing on stage in the film, but was actually the last song that they played as the Band that night. Martin Scorsese chose to open the film with this tune.
@65spitz Aye, you're using four limbs at different times, add vocals thats like 5, that just makes it mathematically THAT much tougher, I can hardly play drums, man to even do back up vocals is real tough, an Im just not a very good singer. He seems to just have a natural voice too. Another interesting thing about The Band is Robbie Robertson. He had a mic, but they usually turned it down durning songs. So even the guitar player couldnt sing an play at the same time! Amen Levon!!!
@Ballhogmusic funny... absolutely true. It's funny to see him up there looking like he's crooning during the tunes and you know the mic is muted basically. Then between songs turn em up so he can talk to the audience. Could he play guitar? Yes, quite well. Not everyone can sing, thats ok, and the mic was useful as I said he tended to communicate w the audience most outta the guys... Anyway, funny, thanks fer the laugh!
@jimtheejim Well actually its a Holand Dozier Holland tune produced by them with Gaye singing lead. The Band's version sticks it right in the back of the net though.
yes, it is very difficult to play drums and sing, but oh my god is it ever fun! This is one of the best live performances ever by a musical group. You should read the background of how the horn charts came to be...
@TheTestingGrounds Hey sorry just saw this reply now. Ya I figured it was from that album, its my favorite one. I was hoping there would be more video of it.
Saw them in Wembley Stadium in London September, 1973, with Joni Mitchell & Tom Scott and the LA Express, and CSN &Y....and 80,000 friends. My greatest concert experience ever. Period.
Funniest moment.....one guy kept yelling "Play LIFE IS A CARNIVAL". Another guy yelled back, "Wrong- life is a fucking bitch!". 38 years later that still makes me laugh.
you will never find a tighter rhythm section than levon and rick danko! so so so fcking funky! and the horns are just killer. i was very lucky to see rick and garth play some very small intimate shows right before he died, rick had put few pounds on but his voice could still make you cry. the best!

what a great tune. i had never heard this tune when i went to this concert, but it sure got my attention. when those horns came in it made perfection even better!
@dormontphilippe1958 They're called The Band because that was the collective name by which people knew them; nothing else was really more fitting. And you obviously haven't listened to the Band in any seriousness or open-mindedness. Stage Fright is probably their most ryhmically enriched album; Northern Lights, Southern Cross isn't bad either. I mean it has Ophelia and It Makes No Difference. And The Basement Tapes with Bob Dylan is epic. You are such a fag. Who doesn't like the Band?
One of the Greatest Jam Bands in Modern Music! Dylan knew what he was doing when he had them as his Back-Up Band! Very Very Underated to this Day! The best compliment I ever heard about them.....when Eric Clapton quit Cream.....he wanted to be in this Group!
Anyone notice how sloppy this number sounds on "Waltz" compared to this? I can't even listen to that soundtrack after discovering Rock of Ages.

w/ all respect to Robbie detractors' I recall him, in his prime, as being quite economical

"The Band", "The Band", "The Band"... what a comical name for a BAND...
These guys made 3 strong albums: "Music From Big Pink", "The Band", "Rock Of Ages". Eveythin' else is shit. Sorry for the word folks.
dormontphilippe1958 1 year ago
@dormontphilippe1958 they are THE Band. As in the band above all other bands. The culmination of everything a band should be.
n17c 1 year ago
