  • So this is where the inspiration for the 2004 film "Man on Fire" came from

  • 3:27...Makes me sick to my stomach.

Things are really put into perspective when such tragic events happen.

Football isnt important when 56 people die.

  • RIP to the 56 dead. Can't help but think of certain parallels with the Stardust nightclub fire of 1981 in Dublin, as people weren't able to use certain exits then either. I knew about this fire but had never seen this footage before. Should never be forgotten.

  • Cowdust51 I take it your not from Bradford?? Your sick and I could seriously hurt you you little selfless human been!

  • Sickening :(( RIP to all those who died!

  • This is just awful!

  • The worst part about this was people that were trying to leave via the gate behind the stand. Unfotunatly the stuard that was ment to be looking after the gate was away on his tea break. He had the keys. People were litarly trapped and burnt to death. This video is now shown to all stuards when they do there fire saftey course.

  • The fire was caused by a cigarette which was dropped and fell between the cracks in the floor, underneath the floor was loads of accumulated paper and rubbish, a tragedy waiting to happen. Now there are no wooden stands and no smoking allowed in the ground so hopefully this will not happen again. Shame on those so called fans who were seen laughing as people died and carried on singing.

  • @Meadoway40

Kings Cross fire 1988 - 31 killed by giant blowtorch. When trying to re-create it, scientists had trouble working out how it got so hot and flashed (it was a then-unknown phenomenon called the trench effect) but found when trying to start a fire underneath a similar escalator in the same condition, it ignited on the first dropped match.

Bradford - Respect to those fans and police who showed such bravery to help others - & thanks to those in Lumb Lane who opened their homes to them.

  • Oh my god!

  • To see this you witness those who are running for their lives, and those who've stopped running, stopped pushing others out of the way to save their own skin, and are actually helping others instead of themselves to get to safety. To say this is risky, as it has been said to death over hundreds of years, but watching this makes you wonder what you would do in this situation, whether you would be one of the screaming masses, or you would stand out to help others rather than just yourself.

  • "The Roof, The Roof, The Roof, is on fire... we don't need no water let the motherfucker burn, burn motherfucker burn!"

  • @cowdust51 Imagine the last moments of the 56 that died in 4 minutes. 27 men, women and children running toward exit K to find the gates were locked and nobody there to open them. Imagine your mother, sister, brother, pushing against steel bars as the smoke, flames and heat reached them. Imagine being 11 years old, despite dad, your uncle and grandad there to protect you and not knowing why it hurt, why your daddy couldn't keep you safe. He was Andy and I hope he haunts your dreams.

  • @Long23 lighten up its a song

  • @cowdust51 I know it is a song. Why would you post it here? Why don't you have a bit of respect, and delete it.

  • @cowdust51 Wow! Do you even deserve to be part of the human race? Ridiculous troll.

  • i like and lol how the annoucer is so calm "ohh its so awful."

  • Also, the club had no fire action plan in place. No call was placed to the fire brigade who only attended because they were watching the match back at the station.

  • The reason for so many deaths was that the exits at the back of the stadium had been padlocked shut to prevent people sneaking in to watch the match. The club failed to have enough stewards manning these exits. It is arguable that if these exits had been open, as they were required to by law, many of those who died could have survived. Despite the heroic efforts of the police, they had, at that time, received little to no training in crowd management.

  • Your right but all people regardless of age should be able to watch this to pay respect to the supporters who died during this horrific disaster. It might be very upsetting but that's life, these things happen. YouTube's protecting us all from the truth and all the true real horrors that happened 26 years ago.

  • RIP

  • Why the fuck is this video flagged for over 18's? As horrific as it may appear, this really happened, it's not some kind of pornographic film or a gorefest slasher movie.

  • @MrLooog It might have something to do with the 30-something people that died that day, including the one on the video near the end. I'm not a parent, but I'd say that's cause for restricting access. What say you? Hmm?

  • @squiggleworks9 oh shut the fuck up.

  • Never will we forget

  • @William321123321

I recall seeing it live too, I think they cut to the ground during the broadcast of Grandstand because of the fire. I definitely remember seeing the man on fire. I might be wrong, the memory can play tricks, but I remember this exact footage and commentary on T.V. I've not seen it since that day and I doubt they would have shown the burning man after editing it.

  • only found out about this yesterday when i went 2 footie with my dad and smokin in stadiums came up...now i understand why we cant

RIP to the 56, and major respect to the police and fans who tried to help, must have been awful

  • what a horrible tragedy

  • The reason why the fire started in the first place was just a building disaster waiting to happen. Years worth of trash that went under the wooden stands was piling up and the safety inspectors told the club to clean up a few times and they never did. Because of that all it took was a cigarette that went under the stands and the years worth of trash finally caught on fire.

  • Oh, & the man who was in fire was still so fuelled by adrenaline & it's effects, he didn't realise he was on fire!

  • The most annoying thing about this is that it was started by a discarded cigarette (fire training courses use this as an example of how small items can cause such huge & deadly fires, this was used on a fire training course I went on through work, which is how I know how this was started)! Now aren't you glad smoking is banned in public places? Statistics prove that fire incidents have dramatically fallen since smoking in public places has been banned!

  • damn was this before stop drop and roll was invented... casually walks while on fire.. lol wtf

  • @Muhammad6531 ..... and you believe in a supreme being that doesn't exist ? How sad - don't waste your life

  • Hooligans probably (deliberately) started it, hooligans are mugging for the cameras while they see dozens of people burning, and hooligans are just scum in general. No sport is worth getting violent over. Soccer especially, its a silly game for 10 year olds. Graduate to real Football, Euro-wienies!

  • @HailAnts real football? you mean touch rugby for girls in pads and helmets?

  • @Muhammad6531 You cunt.

  • Soccer holigans are scum...

  • @HailAnts nothing to do with football hooliganism you mong....

  • 1st live televised football game was in 1960 on bbc1 also this game was televised live as a celebration of bradfords promotion, don't want to piss on anyone's parade.

  • @Muhammad6531 you're a very sad person

  • Anyone know if that burning man died?

  • @cookiepfc1 56 people died mate

  • @cookiepfc1 Yes, he was a retired mill worker, and died later in hospital, sadly.

  • @ant259 That's filthy, can't imagine something like that happening!

  • The stand was so obviosly overcrowded....

  • Awful tragedy I remember seeing it live and it was horrible. Unfortunately these comment facilities tend to be a lurking place for trolls to to spew their mindless nonsence.

  • Stupid fucking prick starting the fire. They were really crap at football back then. Today's players much better.

  • Football fans are fucking idiots. Chanting as the stands burn... I'm surprised some of them didn't run into the fire because they thought it looked pretty.

  • @kerimil actually there was a layer of rubbish under the wooden stands that had accumulated over the years and the fire started because someone dropped a match, cigarette. (according to official reports) So it was partly someones fault but moreso the human error of allowing such a fire hazard of a stadium

  • ...

    He commentated the fire...

  • Did the man walking while on fire survive? Poor man.

  • @patch1610 No he died but not because of his burns but from injuries he sustained from the people trying to put him out.

  • my god i am in my 40s i have never scene anything like this what started it how did it spread so fast

  • So strange that many people are cheering as the place, and people, are burning up!

  • How can anyone not watch that without tears in their eyes?

  • This sounds like a 5 minute version of the Hindenburg radio broadcast... how awful a scene... I have a huge lump in my throat.

  • Whys everyone getting cheecky if your not from bfd dnt comment that day was unbeliveably bad show your regard or fuck of

  • This disgusts me. people died on that day and those twats are cheering. It furiates me, footballl is one big joke, it should be banned, footballers being payed millions to kick a ball round a field fucking low lives cheering, have some respect.

  • This was a 3rd division game in 1985. Barely anyone playing at the top level back then was a millionaire, never mind in the 3rd division.

  • remember it like it was yesterday

  • They're lucky the smoke was going the other way; that would have suffocated them. The people cheering didn't understand lucky they are and serious it was.

  • who cares Soccer is a stupid Sport for Dirty Europeans !!!

  • @mcinty12 so oversized cocks wearing helmets and body armour and banging into each other isn't stupid then?

  • First ever Youtube video I've seen that's made me cry. R.I.P those that died, and I only hope that those that did, died quickly, because fire is a horrific way to die.

  • I was there, in the paddock at the side of the stand where the fire started, the singing was because, and please don't take this the wrong way, it was sort of exciting to see, it was so shocking it made it exciting, that was until we realised people were getting injured!!

People were singing "piss on it, piss on it, piss on it" like i said, until we saw people getting hurt and worse, I personally saw an old gentleman trying to get over the wall, he didn't have the strength to get over, nobody c

  • Your just a small team in Bradford ... wankers they deserved to die

  • @CHILxShOtZzx Class A cunt you mate . thumbs up to you mate. well done. you just proved your cock is really dangling from your head.

  • @bve4trainz wow your hard ... oh wait you cant get hard coz you dont have a cock.

  • @bve4trainz your channels good ... not. you clearly dont get out much i mean who records themselves playing a train game, you should think about getting a job, or did you have one as a train driver but got the sack because you were bettee at it on the game than in real life. Cunt

  • @CHILxShOtZzx Let's hoping you die a slow and painful death soon - nice channel by the way, you appear to have a passion for computer games, I'm sure others will make their own minds up about that - sad little life, feeling brave behind a keyboard, box of kleenex - you really really are a true example of what contraception could prevent. RIP.

  • @SteelTurtle74 your cool arnt you looking at my channel, it just shows you are that sad you only come on youtube to watch people burn in a fire, your the sic one not me.

  • @CHILxShOtZzx <=== One of the biggest downsides of youtube/the Internet as a whole is knowing human beings like this exist. I use the term "human being" loosely.

  • that poor guy on fire must have been in so much shock he didnt feel the pain of the fire.. he was just walking out like he wasnt ingolfed in flames...

  • What the hell is wrong with those idiots cheering while this is going on...fucking disgraceful!

  • There is nothing like the feeling of being trapped with no escape knowing that you're going to die a horrific death. Pure dread. It's sickening just to watch it.

  • It's weird that the fire had lasted for almost 5 minutes and some people did still not managed to escape the fire and burned to death! How?

  • @EugenKaalikas they got trapped in exit corridor under the seats, where doors were locked. Burning man was one of them.

  • I pressed the snowflake button and the fire went out.

  • Those sick people celebrating about it:O How could they?

  • Shame on them who clapped and was happy!

  • Sounds like alan partridge doing the commentary

  • horrific,

  • People sang early, but it got quiet later

3:20: "HEY!! Big Fire!! WOO!!!! This is AWESOME!!!" *big adrenaline rush*

3:40: "HAHA! (Singing)" *fun adrenaline high*

4:45: *see injured people being assisted* *stops singing* "...Oh shit, that's no good." *pause* "I hope to many people aren't hurt." *rush wears off*

5:25: *see bodies being dragged away* "I hope everyone got out!" *gets shiver*

5:45: *see burning guy, hear screams* "OH fuck!! Fuck!! Oh my god!!!"

    *all singing has ended*

  • all that from a fag end, the person who that was is a fuckin moron

  • This is so tragic, and extremely upsetting )':

  • It's easy to judge the fans cheering, but it's unlikely they understood the full scope of the situation until later. So many had escaped already, it's possible it didn't occur to them that the fire would spread to kill others. You can hear it in the narrator - he's unconcerned at first, in denial toward the middle, and it's only at the end that you hear him grasp the true horror of the situation. It doesn't vindicate their actions, don't get me wrong, but everything's harsher in hindsight.

  • 0.0 that must have been scary

  • The problem here was the extremes of heat radiation from the fire. This is caused by the structural defects of the roof. Min at 4:23. you can see it clearly, at once begin to burn like the hair of the man, although this is our suite 10 m from the fire.

  • Comment removed

  • they aint fans they r arseholes, hope they watch this back some 27 years later and hang their heads in shame,! i so hope that poor man on fire survived, bless him

  • @k3llz67 The poor guy died later in Hospital, R.I.P.

  • @aggyuvf awwww bless him

  • we were shown this as fire saftey in school, rip lives lost :( xxx

  • this was caused by someone trying to light a fag and chucking the match between his legs which fell through the stand to a place underneath where there was so much rubbish that had not been cleared for 30years.thats why the fire grow so quick as well as the area acted as a wind tunnel so the fire had everything it need to cover a large area so fast.so so sad.

  • Look how happy are thoes football fans when everything burned... then look how meany people die becouse they want to show how cool theya re... No more humans...not even animals... its something worst. Monsters.

  • this was shown as a fire safety video in 2001 at my former work North Bristol NHS Trust !!!! so so sad :'( x

  • 5:44 OMG! God help him

  • I remember watching this on TV that Saturday afternoon. It was awful seeing this terrible tragedy unfold. :'(

  • What rubbish it was

  • what`s the reason of the fire

  • @younoob010 rubbish under the stands and a discarded cigarette

  • @younoob010 a fan was setting off small fireworks behind one of the rhythm drummers and it hit the top roof/curtain and set it off straight away, when bits fell onto the stand they were up in flames almost immediately

  • stupid fucking retarded english cheering for the fire

  • To be fair, I think the fans who were cheering early on were at the front of the stand and didn't realise how serious the situation was. It falls eerily silent towards the end of the video. RIP the 56.

  • @snotty2712 My dad was there and he said he ran back in and saved 5 people and that was the best he could do, so shut up painting everyone with the same brush! PRICK!

  • Soccer Fans are total maniac and complete stupid idiots. Laughing and cheering while other people burning and dying. Why did they not try to help???

  • A tip of my hat to those policemen who risked their lives to get people out when burning debris was falling all around them. That takes serious courage and selflessness.

  • I remember watching that video the day it happened on ESPN.

I still can't believe some of those dumbasses were clapping and cheering. It disgusted me when I first saw it and it still disgusts me.

  • 5:45 has shit me up did the man live ?

  • @ps2peter Unfortunstely this man later died in hospital

  • @ps2peter There is another video on here and that bit is edited out 'out of respect for someone who died'...so sadly, no, he didn't.

Just one of many tragic days for football in the 80s.

  • wow that went up in flames really fast

  • I can't understand, why the policemen are nearly the only ones taking care of the people left behind. You might think, it could occur to everyone, that there were people in serious need of help. OK, nobody can demand from them to risk their lifes, but cheering seems a bit inappropriate then.

  • I flagged this down as a mark of respect xhugzx

  • I saw this broadcast live on the day and couldn't believe how fast it all happened.

My deepest respect goes out to the absolute selfless heroism of the Bradford police and also to those supporters who went back in to help rescue people.

At 5.00 exactly, with the fire raging, you can see people still going back in to the stand (Bottom left)

    R.I.P. The 56 from a Leicester supporter.

  • 5:45 WTF?

  • @1mrhiphop He must have never heard of stop, drop, and roll

  • 6 minutes it took for that fire which was a couple of metres in radius when spotted to swallow the entire stand.

    6 fucking minutes. terrifying.

  • the ironic thing is the most shocking thing about it is the cheering. the fuckin nutters think it's bonfire night starting early.

  • RIP the 56

  • I think the coppers did a great job ..did you see theone putting out the fire on his head :O

  • I remember seeing this on tv when i was 11 ... Ime a Leeds fan and Bradford are probably our biggest rivals. but i have nothing but sympathy for all on that day. very sad,

  • THE POLICE , real heroes who did a fantastic job on that day with no thought for their own lives , but lets not forget the people who died RIP

  • It took less than 4 minutes to burn the entire stand.

I remember seeing this on look north,i couldnt believe there were people in there burning to death. It was so sad.

    SWFC

  • Shows how idiotic football fans are, oh look there is a fire lets cheer about it, fucking idiots.

  • @lyko2 is just the excitement of the moment, but they're really concerned.

  • How did the fire start and did anybody die?

  • @DudeKingTV 56 dead

  • @DudeKingTV someone flicked a fag into a pile of rubbish that was beneath wooden seats

  • @DudeKingTV a discarded cigarette fell through the floor of the stand and landed on a pile of rubbish underneath.

    56 people died.

  • Terrifying how quickly that spread. Is it really nearly 30 years ago?

  • this proves smoking should be banned

  • Most died when they went down an escape tunnel to find the gates had been locked.

  • Like the Station Fire, and Beverly Hills Supper Club fire, this is another lesson that as soon as you see any fire, or even hear a fire alarm or smoke detector, get away. If it turns out to be nothing, or a false alarm, so be it. But it also may grow quickly, and a chance that hesitation will cost you your life.

  • so sad

  • This video and the reaction of the crowd, makes me think that what The Sun wrote about Hillsborough was in fact true.

  • @RbVDK Lies mate. Pure fabrication based on a right wing opinion that all liverpudlians are natural thieves.

  • The guy on fire at 5:48 died later in the hospital.

  • How did the fire start?

  • @godbacks09 someone dropped a cigarette. It fell through the floor of the stand and landed on a pile of rubbish underneath.

  • cheering and clapping while people burn to death in front of them.

    unbelievable

  • this is why theres no smoking in stadiums

  • I remember this..i was 23..I hope those idiots who were cheering are now hanging their heads in shame

  • Amazingly as a huge footie fan I'd never even heard of this until tonight when they showed us this very footage at work to emphasise how quickly fire can escalate. Somebody actually left the room upset when the man walked onto the pitch burning. Horrible scenes

This incident deserves far more remembrance than it gets. I'm not comparing anything, but it really should be up there with Hillsborough and such.

  • Pure disaster. Rest in peace

  • 3:23 many people happy with it

  • @Zheige

I figure they don't realize people have been killed at that point.

  • I see some comments about how the people died, what we don't see here in the video is the worst part the poor supporters who attempted to leave by going back down into the stand and leave via the turnstyles but like today's games once the match is going they are locked, and sadly on this day they stayed locked. Respects to all effected on that day.

  • This film must have been a significant part in creating the stereotype of soccer hooligans who notoriously rioted and stampeded at a number of games through the 80's and early 90's, leading to hundreds of death and many more injuries. Too much booze, too little brains, or both?

  • @inkyguy No not really it was caused by rubbish under the stand catching fire nothing to do with hooliganism

the Heysel disaster was what caused the stereotype as us English being hooligans

after that all English sides were banned from playing in Europe (Expect the national side)

Which lead widespread hooliganism when England played abroad most notably Germany 88' Italia 90' Poland 93' Landsdown Road 95' England 96' France 98' Belgium 00' and Germany 06'

  • OMG so sad! :'( Worst thing I've ever seen in a football game. Also shame for the supporters who where singing and jumping after the fire occured. Rest In Peace <3

  • JUST FROM 1 LITTLE CIG :(

  • if this would have happened today the death toll would have been near on 200 due to health and safety rules governing the police,so many brave coppers saving so many lives R.I.P.

  • So so sad, I beleive it was worse then Hillsborough

  • As a Bradford City fan, every time i see this i cry.I wasn't born when this happened but my mum and dad was!I just wish people would have more respect on this video. We should not be arguing over 'who teams the best' or anything,we should be watching this and remembering the people who lost their lives!<3 C.T.I.D!

  • Why are they still chanting?

I went to Valley Parade last week and saw the memorial, it just makes you think how tragic it really was.

    RIP.

  • Remember watching this on telly as a young kid, my dads face was just disbelief.

    YNWA

  • as a liverpool fan i never knew of this horrific day but the people of bradford i say you'll never walk alone R.I.P

  • rip to all those all lost there lives that dreadful day, mark- chelsea fan.

  • Im not sure how 59 people died. hopefully it was was the smoke, not the fire. Fire is a bad way to go

  • @BeardedClamMeister It would probably be smoke but, apparently, there were bodies found at the back of the stand by the locked doors.

  • harrowing
