Born Behind Bars: Inmates Raising Children in Prison

In India, if a mother doesn't take her child to prison with her, then the kid could wind up on the streets. It's actually considered the norm there for women who have kids to take them to prison with them because the bond between mother and child there is so considered such a sacred thing, apparently it's considered almost child abuse to let someone else raise it. Frankly, I think it's a good idea because it gives the mothers a reason to want to do better.

I'm sure ALL those mothers don't want to raise their babies behind bars, but I don't think it is an awful idea I think it's a great idea. I'm sure those babies are being loved fed and taught a lot more then they would be if they were out of the program. The people that run the program I'm sure aren't stupid I'm sure they have strict measures as far as dangerous inmates around the babies.

awful. raising your babies in a place with rapist and murders. if you arent smart enough to stay out of prison you arent smart enough to raise a baby. if you care about your child AT ALL you wouldn't want them raised in a place like that. sick people.

This issue really splits me. On the one hand, it's good that people are finally realising that if you're pro-life, you should give a damn about the kid after it's born too, providing support so children don't slip through the cracks. On the other hand, these women are criminals. Most of them have more than one child. They should be offered sterilisation (note "offered" not "pressured into having").

actually wat they should do is build a separate prison just for expecn mothers n the day care type thing from the prison nthen it wouldnt be around other cell mates who rnt expectn since it might not be safe an also since other r jealous about the fact mohter have a lil more privlages or even treated better...

I never thought I would be for that, but I actually am. If the parents aren't child molestors/murderers and they are expected to meet this strict criteria, I think it may be the motivation they need to get better.. I'm glad that they don't let mothers keep coming back if they aren't learning. This doesn't seem like a "vacation", it seems like they are really learning. It looks great, we'll have to see if it really changes things.
