Funny thing - of all Andy's "Taxi" castmates, only Carol Kane (Latka's wife "Simka") attended his funeral. The movie "Man in the Moon" shows Danny DeVito and Marilu Henner in the temple, but they actually didn't attend the service. There were really only a few celebrities present, including Freddie Blassie.
I saw this segment the night it originally aired. It seemed as if Dave actually didn't know what was going on, but he played along with it anyway. He had no idea that Kaufman was gonna start cussing and throw his coffee at Lawler. Dave was involved in wrestling back in his home state of Indiana - he did some ring announcing for Dick the Bruiser's Indianapolis promotion before he started doing standup.
Sound worked fine.....Andy was a genius. So were all of the people around him. Long live the big joke....our lives, and all the hilarious things that happen in it:)
if ur wondering if this is real or fake then go home and watch the movie (man on the moon) and if u dont have a video store in the area , then just go on netflix, they have it.
THIS IS SO FUCKED-UP. Violation of WHAT copyrights???? Fuck you TouTube, Fuck You Warners and/or ANYONE responsible for this ridiculous act of censorship!!!
@bergduck tomorrow was two months ago buddy. take this off or write "no sound" in the description. thanks for the post but this no longer helps anyone trying to watch the real vid
That would be Warner's Music Group I believe; or Wanking Moronic Gobshites as I call 'em, they have a habit of yanking music scores on certain YouTube videos that they feel violate their copyright, (which seems to be almost everything on YouTube) they also have yanked just basic audio tracks from films, TV series, cartoons, or they'll just sometimes pressure the YouTube video holder to substitute some other audio track.
I remember this when it originally aired..I was fooled..The best part of the video is the expression on the stagehands faces when andy takes off...lol GREAT stuff...
This is great. Yes, they were friends and working together. Comedians didn't get why he came to Memphis. Lawleer was the king of the dupe! Held his own (first time national), lol.
@TheLiberalsSuck Do you lick fat old white republican cock? From what I see here you like Obamas fat cock shoved up your filthy ass hole huh teabagger?
@seedstar67 nice assumption...I'm a Conservative first...and a Liberal jackass like you last...and if you like dick--no matter what party shoved up your ass go to Massachusetts or San Francisco to "get your groove on.." OWNED!
The look of total disdain on Lawler's face is perfect. You really buy that he hates Kaufman. Kaufman is so serious, almost totally sincere. Brilliant.
If they were not friends and were really angry, they would not be sitting so close to one another. Think about situations where you don't like someone and the physical distance you keep from them in the process. When Andy moved his chair closer to Jerry, Lawler would have moved away out of contempt.
How badly do you think it hurts Vince McMahon to know that the greatest wrestling storyline was not done through his company? I like Vince, but hell never have this.
This was an act. The two were good friends. I've never been a big fan of Kaufman, but I got a chuckle out of how he was able to string so many people along with this.
@ps0u1159 I have to agree because you didn't know if it was real or not. Especially at this time when all the secrets of wrestling was not brought to light.
Of course its fake.... actually it was a joke, but everyone thought it was 4 real.... it took many years after Kaufman`s death for lawler to admit it was a joke...
@TheHockeyCentral dave didn't play along. lawler and andy were the only ones that knew it was a work. they kept it going for months and everyone in the media and even the other wrestlers in memphis thought it was real.
@dobyblue yeah i know the story. bob zmuda decided to tell the story so then lawler wrote about it in his book. i think it's awesome that they were able to keep it quiet for so long.
@meccadon434 Yes, it was staged, but only Andy, Lawler and Andy's manager knew their entire feud was a joke. Letterman and his crew were not in on the joke. They didn't reveal the joke until the movie "Man in the Moon" about Kaufman came out (Lawler played himself in the movie).
Are you kidding? You can hear the slap. In professional wrestling when we slap each other we really do it. It isn't pulled like a punch. Watch it again and you can hear it.
This was one of his best. But, his greatest work is getting many many people to believe he is still alive. I'm amazed at how many don't know how he did it. He clearly knew he had a cancer before he revealed it to ANYONE. Then, he told a few individuals he was going to "fake" his death by having cancer (BEFORE revealing that he actually had it). The man was brilliant.
Speaking of waste, you wasted your "precious" time commenting on him. And, I know this is not the first video you have viewed of his. You're an Internet Troll. You most likely have the brain power to get upset & offended at my calling you stupid. But, I guarantee you will never figure out why you have been labelled as such.
This was very well done. Now, look at TV we have today, so-called "reality" TV where this is all you ever get...and it's done very badly with no real passion. Andy knew exactly what he was doing and did it well.
I remember being about 20 when this happened, and this fooled everybody. Such a great staged and fake fight by both guys. I think even Letterman thought they were really pissed at each other. It was revealed about 5 or 6 years ago that this was all a big put-on...RIP Andy!

Of course they would have aired it, when they realized Kaufman was fine and uninjured, knowing the ratings it would get. The NBC execs were probably in on it but not by that reasoning. I would say the only key in that (some of) the cast was aware of the prank was the fact that the band continued playing music after Andy was slapped.
Andy Kaufman was a huge fan of wrestling, as well as a very good friend of Jerry Lawler. However, this was a performance piece that lasted quite some time.
