The list itself is good...with only a couple of exceptions. The biggest exceptions are not having both Wall-E and Beauty and the Beast on the list somewhere. Pull Titanic and Toy Story. The biggest problem is the order. The top 5 needs an overhaul. Leave Citizen Kane and Godfather but Schindler's List, 2001, Lawrence of Arabia should be the top 5...in that order. Most of the rest of the list needs to be reworked on order.
I would have put Pulp Fiction in the top 20, taken off Titanic and replaced it with Beauty and the Beast, moved Schindler's List to top five, Star Wars to top ten, leave Citizen Kane where it is, moved up To Kill a Mockingbird, and moved Lawrence of Arabia into the top three. Wizard of Oz is overrated. And where the fuck is the Big Lebowski?
Ive seen 49 of these, still got a bit of catching up to do I do plan on seeing all of these. But honestly eventhough most of the films ive seen are deifntietly worthy of making this list some were extrmemely suprising and some seemed to low whilst others seemed to high. I'm a bit shocked these guys didn't add Paths Of Glory,Night Of The Hunter,Rebel Without A Cause,Dog Day Afternoon,The Shining,The Exorcist, The Killing,Close Encounters Of The third Kind or Scarface
@EnterTheWuTang1 oh and American Beauty, how can that not be here?. Seems it was missunderstood by so amny people it's one of the best ever invented without a doubt
i think the original 1997 list was more accurate. Toy Story was definitely awesome to see in 1995, but it shouldn't be considered one of the greatest movies of all time.
I started watching movies on this list last year; I have seen 70 of them so far. Most of these movies are from the 20th century but that is because without many of them, movies would not necessarily be how they are today. Bonnie and Clyde (1967) was the start of a very violent era of film. A Clockwork Orange (1971) inspired a whole new dimension in film making. Just because our favorite movies of today aren't on this list, doesnt mean they will never be. Some just need time to be appreciated!
@Shonesurcin....."Back To The Future"???? Really???? While it`s an entertaining movie, I`d question if it would even crack the top 1000 movies of all-time...."Dumb And Dumber" was entertaining too, and I`d never suggest that it makes any "Best Of" list....
AFI pisses me off because of how biased they are to movies from the 20s-70s. There are so many movies from the 80s-200s that deserve to be on a list. People who say old movies are better than new movies are just as closed-minded as people who say new movies are better than old movies.
Also, like so many people have said, Pulp Fiction should be higher. WAY higher.
this list doesnt make sense. Ben hur is the exact example as an Epic yet 100?#100-7o's are the best movies ever... this list needs to be re thought hhaa
I'm not sure what The Sixth Sense is doing on this list. Yeah great twist, but I don't really think the movie will hold up that well in decades to come. Biggest snubs: The Third Man, LA Confidential, Beauty and the Beast, Amadeus, Pinocchio, Paths of Glory.
Great video and great music. I personally think that AFI did a good job with the list. But the order could definitely be better especially in the top 20
@aerocheder I know that but that doesn't mean it has aged well. Some movies are good for their time and only that time. Watching it today you'll notice that it's pretty boring and uncomfortably racist. The truly great movies are the timeless movies. The Birth of A Nation is not such a film.
A Complete list of suggestions: Should take off: 1. Titanic and some others I ll talk about later Should have been on this list: 1. The Shining 2. The Green Mile 3. The Usual Suspects 4. Fight Club 5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 6. Reservoir Dogs 7. Se7en 8. The Seven Samurai 9. The Third Man Should have been higher up: 1. The Shawshank Redemption 2. 12 Angry Men 3. Goodfellas 4. Pulp Fiction 5. 2001: A Space Odyssey 6. The Godfather Part II 7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
@MrTayyabSaeed The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an Italian film and Seven Samurai is a Japanese film so they can't be on the list of the 100 greatest American movies.
Casino? 7 magnificent? 3 days of a Condor? Kramer vs Kramer? ... and wtf are the Johnny Depp movies... that's just the missing movies, don't want to comment the ranking that is completely ridiculous...
are these AFI guys serious? The Shawshank Redemption at 72, 12 Angry Men at 87, Goodfellas at 92? really? shouldn't these movies be a little higher up the list?
@griffin324 Reservoir Dogs? Honestly? That movie is really good, but it's a CULT classic meaning that it's only significant to a small group. Also, Full Metal Jacket is hardly worth mentioning.
@Grogxong the thing with these lists is that they always put the first ones because they're not going to waste time and space putting 3 films on the list.
Should be in the list: Amadeus, Dog Day Afternoon, Patton, Dr. Zhivago, Reservoir Dogs, Dead Poets Society, Fargo and Ed Wood (Tim Burton´s movie)
Take off of list: Cabaret, Titanic, The Sixth Sense, Blade Runner, Shane, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, The General, and Duck Soup
Should be higher in list: The Deer Hunter (#10), The last picture show (#24), Goodfellas (#15), The bridge on the river Kwai (#11) and Unforgiven (#27)
Should be on:The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, Frankenstein, Planet of the Apes, Deliverance
Take off: Titanic, the Sixth Sense, The Apartment (it was alright but not that good), Tootsie, Cabaret for Christ's sake. Terrible. 2001 is a compl;ete snoozefest.
Should be higher: King Kong (should be top 5), 12 Angry Men, BC&TSK,
And Star Wars is not as good as Empire or Jedi so take it off and put them on . You know I'm right.
having spartacus at 81 when rocky is at 57 and jaws is at 56 really pisses me off. how are those movies better? ridiculous. everyone should watch spartacus
Pulp Fiction, The French Connection, The Last Picture Show, American Graffiti and The Bridge on the River Kwai should be way higher and the ones that should be in the list are:
Fargo, Reservoir Dogs, Fight Club, American Beauty, Patton, Amadeus, The Truman Show and Adaptation.
really great choice of music you did there. i didnt know this song should impersonate jupiter but it really contains the spirit of optimism that hollywood had when most of these films were made. at least thats the way i unterstand
How come "Lawrence of Arabia" is on this list? Mind you, I think it deserves a spot even higher than #7, but as far as I'm concerned it's not an American film. Or am I wrong? The director, David Lean, was British; one of the two screenwriters were British; the producer was Austrian; the production company British; the composer Maurice Jarre was French; the cinematographer was British; the main lead Peter O'Toole is clearly British, as for most of the other actors.
My Top Ten: 10.Rocky (1976) 9. Pulp Fiction (1994) 8. Ben Hur (1959) 7. Taxi Driver (1975) 6. The Godfather (1972) 5. The Exorcist (1973) 4. Jungle Book (1967) 3. The Dark Knight (2008) 2. Reservoir Dogs (1992) 1. Seven (1995)
The AFI only started this top 100 list in 1998, but the sight and sound poll has named it number one since like 1960. look up "films considered the greatest ever" on wikipedia for more information.
This list is ridiculous. Raging Bull at #4? Now, it deserves to be in the Top 20 but not the Top 5. I mean, that's dominating films like 2001 - ridiculous. Among other things, this list is definately flawed - and not based on opinions, but based on cultural/future-film impacts. In 1991, 2001 was deemed culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry. In my mind it should be 2001 at #4.
i liked this video because the music really climaxed when the top few movies were being announced. As for my top few movies, I'd have to say C. Kane isnt on there. I know that it was a pioneer in great movies, but honestly, movies have improved since then. 1. The Godfather 2, Saving Private Ryan 3, The Godfather 2 4, On the Waterfront 5, The Sting 6. Psycho 7. Bridge on the river Kwai 8, The Great Escape 9. Singin in the Rain 10. Some like it Hot
Citizen Kane is not overrated. It is perhaps the best character study in all of film history, and it really set the standard on how movies will be made.
These movies are based on creativity, invention of ideas, the effect on the country, and what they created with what they had. NOT ON ACTING, people need to understand that
WOOO Vertigo top 10! Seriously though, somebody might hit me for saying this, but I think Citizen Kane is one of the most overrated movies of all time. The Philadelphia Story and the Graduate should've been higher.
And also, whoever said the Mist should be on there...I hang my head in shame for you.
on terms of innovation, then citizen kane easily blows everyone else away. Every movie on that list that came out after it was affected by citizen kane. Not, judging by innovation, then it is arguable, for sure.
While there are a lot of great movies on this list I don't exaclty agree with where some of them were placed. Vertigo is not better than Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest should be in the top 10.
Shonesurcin, this is from 1900 to 1999, so alot of the movies you said that should be on there where not made yet.
and beside the fact.
THE DARK KNIGHT IS NOT THE GOOD A MOVIE
it is really over rated and the action in it is really repetitive. Their are like 3 different plots, its not inventive. The only good thing about it is the acting of Health ledger. When there is a list of 100 best movies in 2099, i do not even think the dark knight should be on their, but thats just my opinion....
@Shonesurcin Seriously? You think The Dark Knight and The Mist deserve to be on this list? Maybe if it were the top 500. They are definitely nowhere near as good as the films already listed. I can't comment on Back to the Future because I have not seen it.
@Shonesurcin good thing the dark knight came out after this list was made. and i love how your idea of "greatest american films" are all big money making action flicks. should "transformers 2" be on here as well ya think? its called "100 greatest movies" not "my personal favorites"
I agree most of these films deserve a spot, although some of the exact rankings I would disagree with. Some of the choices are strange to me, and sadly my favorite movie of all time isn't on here, but of course the job of compiling this list has to be absolutely overwhelming, so they can't make everyone happy.
Dude Godfather part II was Awesome it was number III that was a bad movie. Some of my favorite movies are The Lord of the rings 1,2,3 The Godfather I, II The Silence of the Lambs Star Wars Indiana Jones E.T.(loved that as a kid) Forest Gump The Dark Knight The sixth sense the shawshank redemption Schindler's List Why is Raging Bull on their Rocky is a million times better.
sigh... raging bull is masterful. Rocky is great too, but they are totally different movies. they should probably both be on here, but raging bull is better... it's more then a boxing film... It's the guys life story.
Yes, and Star Wars is also now viewed as a sort of modern mythology, which is of course how Lucas intended it to be, he studied under Joseph Campbell, so between that, the technology, re-invigorating the genre, and really kick-starting SUCCESSFUL independent film-making, Star Wars deserves its place, maybe a bit higher, I'd like it about 10 or so.
I LOVES Star Wars, but I understand why TESB isn't ranked- high. I think it should be down in the 80-100 area; if Godfather II can make it........
As for The Fellowship, I like the choice and spot; if they do thi again in 10 years, I'd put Return of the King on there for the same reason I'd put TESB: a rare great sequal that turns a story into a saga.
I can't fathom how Jawas even GOT ONTO the list; I really see it as a hugely overrated movie- fun, but nothing to compare with others on the list. Raging Bull is also too high; if anything, I'd have it swap spots with Rocky, or better yet give the #4 spot to Gone With the Wind.
Toy Story, for its impact on the industry in the FX department alone, envermind the great story, deserves a little higher, close to Goodfellas. I'm RELIEVED that Titanic is so low- good movie, but overrated. The lack of westerns disturbs me, they're a staple- WHERE is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? And if you're going to put in animated pictures, then you must include Beauty and the Beast.
And, finally, as much as I love Orson Welles, I have to give the nod to The Godfather.....
It didn't have the impact that Fellowship did. Fellowship had a bigger impact because it was the first. At the same time, Empire Strikes Back wasn't on there, and I dont know why Godfather part 2 was on there.
Can someone please tell me why LOTR is on this list?? This means, according to AFI, LOTR is the best movie of the 2000s, since is the ONLY movie in this list from that decade, and #50???? Come on, this list lost all credibility with that.
I have two ideas. Someone should make a top 100 list of the movies that were significant in the history of film making, i.e. that made the art, technology, etc. move forward (ex. Citizen Kane); and then a similar list of movies that changed the world itself.
What about: Dances with wolves, Rain man, Heat, Casino, Scent of a woman, The Departed, Braveheart, Gladiator, Leaving Las Vegas, Usual Suspects, No country for old men, There will be blood...? Really not fair!
Well, no country and blood hadn't even been released yet when the voting took place...and I know dances with wolves was on the old list...but its so hard to make a list of only 100 w/o leaving some great ones out.
Intersting. Half of those you mentioned are some of my favorites---Jaws, Apocalypse Now, Lord of the Rings, Dr. Strangleove, 2001: A Space Odyssey---I LOVE all of those!!! but Blade Runner??? I cringed when I saw that on the list! Besides the awesome looking sets and "look" of the film, I found it to be repetitive and, most importantly, VERY dull, even lifeless---I didn't care for it at all! I actually fell asleep near the end.
I hated the five movies I and you mentioned for some reasons, main one is coz they get extremely overrated.
lets take jaws for example, i'm not saying the movie is really bad, but i'm also not saying that it's perfect, like many others say, which frankly get on my nervs.
I hate apocalypse now for one reason, the story didn't make any sense to me, and that's why i hated lord of the rings, there is just no good story in both films, that's my opinion any way.
Haha . . . well, I'm just going to have to exremely disagree, and that's just it . . .
It's all opinion. I personally think Saving Private ryan is overrated. For Ryan to be in the low 70's ranking, and then Goodfellas to be ranked at 92???!!!??? Goodfellas should be lower, in my opinion! Dfinately lower than Ryan!
Saving Private Ryan has one of the best opening sequences ever; in fact, it's some of the best filmaking ever in those first 20 minutes. The photography and effects are increidlbe. However, after that the film kind of falls apart for me. Still good, an 8/10.
Apocalypse Now is, in my opinion, THE best war movie, followed by Patton(also on the list)---both 10/10.
Jaws is definitly overrated, I'll agree with that, Annie Hall is an ok movie, but Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, and The Lord Of The Rings are all classics. Some people like them more, some like them less, but you can't take any of those three out of the top 100.
To be frank with you I just didn't get the point of Apocalypse Now, Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Especially The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. On turning down The Lord of the rings role down, Sean Connery said, 'I had never read [J.R.R. Tolkien], and I didn't understand the script when they sent it to me. Bobbits? Hobbits?'
And I'll say the same, I never understood The Lord of the Rings novels.
well, Star Wars was a huge technological marvel in 1977 with its special effects. It also laid the paved the way for sci-fi in the future, and it was an enourmous success with a lot of new and untested concepts, not to mention that it was made on a budget that was tiny compared to Empire or Return. What Star Trek did for sci-fi television, Star Wars did for sci-fi film.
I think it's great they included the lord of the rings the second go round. Even though it's recent it earned it's place. Perhaps that's because it's based on the 1935 books
What's left out here- An Officer and a Gentleman, The King and I, Planet of the Apes, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pinocchio, Finding Nemo, and several others. No list is impeccable, but I think I could definitely make a more inclusive one.
its good to see the afi finally bumping up movies made for the pure enjoyment of cinema, such as pulp fiction, goodfellas, rear window, casablanca, rocky etc.. rather than ''culturally significant'' films (i.e. shit) such as blade runner, intolerance and the graduate, which are only made to be torn apart and analysed frame by frame by film students.
Pulp Fiction is a piece of crap

Among other things, this list is definately flawed - and not based on opinions, but based on cultural/future-film impacts. In 1991, 2001 was deemed culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry. In my mind it should be 2001 at #4.
jakespick 2 years ago
Agreed (concerning 2001).
CitizenBrown 2 years ago
I agree
tisbutafleshwound 2 years ago
yeah, i really like raging bull, but 2001 should be way higher than where it is now.
griffin324 2 years ago
@jakespick That is just your opinion. IMHO it rightfully deserves it's place in top 5, but that's just me and everybody has their opinion.
makilovi66 1 year ago
@jakespick Raging Bull deserves to be there (It's my favorite film of all time).
ErikC1985 11 months ago
@ErikC1985 It definitely deserves to be there, but not #4.
jakespick 11 months ago
I think that the old list was much better.
They had Bonnie and Clyde at #27, which was better then the 40-something that this list put it at.

One could say movies have evolved/improved because of Citizen Kane, therefore it deserves a spot high up.
MrRoekkum 2 years ago
Citizen Kane is not overrated. It is perhaps the best character study in all of film history, and it really set the standard on how movies will be made.

I luv Schindler's list!!!!!! amazing movie! it should have been higher!!!

Ben-Hur just making it at 100. Ridiculous.

The deer hunter and taxi driver should be a lot higher.

These movies are based on creativity, invention of ideas, the effect on the country, and what they created with what they had. NOT ON ACTING, people need to understand that
WasabiJinn 3 years ago
I'm glad they have Raging Bull at #4 but Citizen Kane is so completely overrated! Pulp Fiction should have been much higher up there
argentozombi 3 years ago
Citizen Kane is pretty overrated. I have seen better.
AmericanGirl5137 3 years ago
I wonder if Citizen Kane will ever not be number one....
blizzaire08 3 years ago
WOOO Vertigo top 10! Seriously though, somebody might hit me for saying this, but I think Citizen Kane is one of the most overrated movies of all time. The Philadelphia Story and the Graduate should've been higher.
And also, whoever said the Mist should be on there...I hang my head in shame for you.
blizzaire08 3 years ago
on terms of innovation, then citizen kane easily blows everyone else away. Every movie on that list that came out after it was affected by citizen kane. Not, judging by innovation, then it is arguable, for sure.
wariowaft 3 years ago
While there are a lot of great movies on this list I don't exaclty agree with where some of them were placed. Vertigo is not better than Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest should be in the top 10.
10secMachine 3 years ago
agree - and titanic? you have to be kidding me
CrazyChickenDK 3 years ago
wow. just wow.
no Green Mile
no Gladiator
LotR 1 instead of 3(or all 3)
nice, a 2007 list of best movies with barely 1 movie newer than 2000(could have just named it "the 1920-1970 list"
also which ones you might add:
the dark knight
the mist
back to the future
Shonesurcin 3 years ago
Who are you talking to? I didn't make this list.

@CitizenBrown haha it says on the info that this is AFI's list

The Mist sucked like nobody's business...
10secMachine 3 years ago
Shonesurcin, this is from 1900 to 1999, so alot of the movies you said that should be on there where not made yet.
and beside the fact.
THE DARK KNIGHT IS NOT THE GOOD A MOVIE
it is really over rated and the action in it is really repetitive. Their are like 3 different plots, its not inventive. The only good thing about it is the acting of Health ledger. When there is a list of 100 best movies in 2099, i do not even think the dark knight should be on their, but thats just my opinion....
WasabiJinn 3 years ago
i think it's for 1907-2007 but nvm...
Shonesurcin 3 years ago
@Shonesurcin Seriously? You think The Dark Knight and The Mist deserve to be on this list? Maybe if it were the top 500. They are definitely nowhere near as good as the films already listed. I can't comment on Back to the Future because I have not seen it.
LttleGrayMen 1 year ago
@Shonesurcin good thing the dark knight came out after this list was made. and i love how your idea of "greatest american films" are all big money making action flicks. should "transformers 2" be on here as well ya think? its called "100 greatest movies" not "my personal favorites"

I agree most of these films deserve a spot, although some of the exact rankings I would disagree with. Some of the choices are strange to me, and sadly my favorite movie of all time isn't on here, but of course the job of compiling this list has to be absolutely overwhelming, so they can't make everyone happy.

sigh... raging bull is masterful. Rocky is great too, but they are totally different movies. they should probably both be on here, but raging bull is better... it's more then a boxing film... It's the guys life story.

What the fuck no Rebel With Out A Cause?.
cheerupkid666 3 years ago
Yes, and Star Wars is also now viewed as a sort of modern mythology, which is of course how Lucas intended it to be, he studied under Joseph Campbell, so between that, the technology, re-invigorating the genre, and really kick-starting SUCCESSFUL independent film-making, Star Wars deserves its place, maybe a bit higher, I'd like it about 10 or so.
I LOVES Star Wars, but I understand why TESB isn't ranked- high. I think it should be down in the 80-100 area; if Godfather II can make it........
obiwanobiwan13 3 years ago
As for The Fellowship, I like the choice and spot; if they do thi again in 10 years, I'd put Return of the King on there for the same reason I'd put TESB: a rare great sequal that turns a story into a saga.
I can't fathom how Jawas even GOT ONTO the list; I really see it as a hugely overrated movie- fun, but nothing to compare with others on the list. Raging Bull is also too high; if anything, I'd have it swap spots with Rocky, or better yet give the #4 spot to Gone With the Wind.
obiwanobiwan13 3 years ago
Toy Story, for its impact on the industry in the FX department alone, envermind the great story, deserves a little higher, close to Goodfellas. I'm RELIEVED that Titanic is so low- good movie, but overrated. The lack of westerns disturbs me, they're a staple- WHERE is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? And if you're going to put in animated pictures, then you must include Beauty and the Beast.
And, finally, as much as I love Orson Welles, I have to give the nod to The Godfather.....
obiwanobiwan13 3 years ago
why isn't the return of the king on there
ThornyHorny101 3 years ago
It didn't have the impact that Fellowship did. Fellowship had a bigger impact because it was the first. At the same time, Empire Strikes Back wasn't on there, and I dont know why Godfather part 2 was on there.
brtshstel 3 years ago
becaues it over rated
sonicfan74 3 years ago
Can someone please tell me why LOTR is on this list?? This means, according to AFI, LOTR is the best movie of the 2000s, since is the ONLY movie in this list from that decade, and #50???? Come on, this list lost all credibility with that.
DNY21 3 years ago
By the way, I forgot to say that I also find Raiders of the Lost Ark, Unforgiven, Dr. Strangelove, The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane very overrated

jben7070 3 years ago
I have two ideas. Someone should make a top 100 list of the movies that were significant in the history of film making, i.e. that made the art, technology, etc. move forward (ex. Citizen Kane); and then a similar list of movies that changed the world itself.
pasfresh123 3 years ago
this is not opinion but by the looks of it, two movies they'll put on it another ten years will be the departed and babel
beauanddustinunleash 3 years ago
Maybe you don't like some of them, but i noticed that they put in the list classic movies, and these ones are real CLASSICS!
(i forgot that no country and there will be blood hadn't been released yet when they voted for the list!)
rapacino19 3 years ago
What about: Dances with wolves, Rain man, Heat, Casino, Scent of a woman, The Departed, Braveheart, Gladiator, Leaving Las Vegas, Usual Suspects, No country for old men, There will be blood...? Really not fair!
rapacino19 3 years ago
the Coen's no country for old men and PTA's there will be blood are only good enough to be in the top 100, the others can below 100.
cinema0fanboy 3 years ago
Well, no country and blood hadn't even been released yet when the voting took place...and I know dances with wolves was on the old list...but its so hard to make a list of only 100 w/o leaving some great ones out.

im glad no country for old men beat it that is such a better movie
benben423 3 years ago
Well . . . I'm just going to have to disagree, and that's that.
larma7 3 years ago
In my opinion there are lots of films that doesn't deserve to be on the list.
For example,,star wars,dr strangelove,jaws, the lord of the rings,,Annie hall,apocalypse now, chinatown, 2001: a space odssey.
I know many of you will diagree with me,, but that's my opinion, and i think there are many film missing from the list.
souaden12 3 years ago
I actually fell asleep near the end.
larma7 3 years ago
First of all thanx for replying,
I hated the five movies I and you mentioned for some reasons, main one is coz they get extremely overrated.
lets take jaws for example, i'm not saying the movie is really bad, but i'm also not saying that it's perfect, like many others say, which frankly get on my nervs.
I hate apocalypse now for one reason, the story didn't make any sense to me, and that's why i hated lord of the rings, there is just no good story in both films, that's my opinion any way.
souaden12 3 years ago
Haha . . . well, I'm just going to have to exremely disagree, and that's just it . . .
It's all opinion. I personally think Saving Private ryan is overrated. For Ryan to be in the low 70's ranking, and then Goodfellas to be ranked at 92???!!!??? Goodfellas should be lower, in my opinion! Dfinately lower than Ryan!
larma7 3 years ago
well here u can see that it's all opinions, coz i think saving private ryan is one of the best war films
I think goodfellas is an excellent film,, but still i think it's also overrated
souaden12 3 years ago
Saving Private Ryan has one of the best opening sequences ever; in fact, it's some of the best filmaking ever in those first 20 minutes. The photography and effects are increidlbe. However, after that the film kind of falls apart for me. Still good, an 8/10.
Apocalypse Now is, in my opinion, THE best war movie, followed by Patton(also on the list)---both 10/10.
larma7 3 years ago
Jaws is definitly overrated, I'll agree with that, Annie Hall is an ok movie, but Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, and The Lord Of The Rings are all classics. Some people like them more, some like them less, but you can't take any of those three out of the top 100.
BrettH2011 3 years ago
To be frank with you I just didn't get the point of Apocalypse Now, Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Especially The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. On turning down The Lord of the rings role down, Sean Connery said, 'I had never read [J.R.R. Tolkien], and I didn't understand the script when they sent it to me. Bobbits? Hobbits?'
And I'll say the same, I never understood The Lord of the Rings novels.
souaden12 3 years ago
well, Star Wars was a huge technological marvel in 1977 with its special effects. It also laid the paved the way for sci-fi in the future, and it was an enourmous success with a lot of new and untested concepts, not to mention that it was made on a budget that was tiny compared to Empire or Return. What Star Trek did for sci-fi television, Star Wars did for sci-fi film.

its good to see the afi finally bumping up movies made for the pure enjoyment of cinema, such as pulp fiction, goodfellas, rear window, casablanca, rocky etc.. rather than ''culturally significant'' films (i.e. shit) such as blade runner, intolerance and the graduate, which are only made to be torn apart and analysed frame by frame by film students.
