I think the filmmakers were going for a pulp Sci-Fi feel here. The acting was mediocre and the plot was generic, but the visual effects were what really made up for all that. I actually ended up not minding the acting or the plot at all because I truly felt like I was reading an old Sci-Fi serial from the 1940-50's, and that was what made the film memorable.
I remember being super excited for this movie when I was 14. It didn't disappoint me. Thought it was a blast and enjoy it to this day. Very underrated! I know we'll never see a sequel, but I do hope Kerry Conran directs again. Surely Hollywood can see beyond the mediocre box office returns and realize what an impressive directorial debut he made. Surely...
To be honest, this has to be one of the worst movies ever made, the actors (expecily jude law) looked like they were uncomfortable in their roles at some points if i recall, 20s-40s something eras planes and laser technology?? And robots that looks like they can only go in one direction? And the lame story really? Not to mention the acting feels like a really bad B-movie or worse? I'am sure they tried to make the movie good and i applaud that. Imo this is super cheezy movie. Just my opinon :S
@EddieMotorhead your mind doesnt have enough capacity to realize whats going on. obviously. Simple: Its not todays Science Fiction where everything is made out of carbon and plastic. Its the science fiction of the 50s and 60s and thats what makes it epic. Its like the movie version of modern science and 60s sci fi comics COMBINED.
@Buemmo I rarely watch movies or TV at all thsse days, mainly because everything has turn into shit and this movie is also rather crap but still decent in it's own way. I don't like it though personaly.
It was a very good movie. It was bashed a lot of multiple reasons-- because of the cast, the long time in development, etc. But forget that and watch it now.
I know many complain that it's mostly CGI, but unlike many films that go into CGI overload, Sky Captain uses it mostly for style, much like films like 300 and Sin City.
@nmoravec1 Well, I don't really agree. I say that both 300 and sin city use it for style really quite effectively. Sky Captain not so much, it felt for me that the visuals were really open and spacious which just makes the whole film seem overwhelmingly bland. I get that it was trying to go for a neo/post-noir sort of look, but it simply didn't agree with me unfortuntely.
Dude I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for 6 years and someone finally knew what I was talking about. It's always nice when you learn the name of a song or movie you watched or listened to long ago.
You don't know how frustration it was to remember this movie. I couldn't remember the name, actors, anything. All I had was a vague image of this trailer that I saw almost 7 years ago. haha Glad I found it. I wanna watch it now cause I never did.
I really wanted to see this movie when it came out, because the aesthetics were very appealing, but I don't know why I never did, should I go rent it now?
the reason I didn't like this movie is for a few reasons one Gwyneth Paltrows acting was terriable. and the Biggest reasons I hated it IS they filmed it on a Green Screen and You can EASILY TELL! It looks too unrealistic. It disapointed me because I love the 30's and 40's aircrat and I was hoping this would be like Crimson Skies
@Sanimangas You can make a good Steampunk movie without using really bad CGI, you can easily tell its on a Green Screen which doesn't make it look steampunk or diesel punk at all makes it look like a bad movie which it was.
@skatepunkzero I agree with you on Gwyneth Paltrows acting but DUDE! Seriously! You dislike this movie cuz of the green screen? Films like these are featured in a classic silver screened style since the beginning of this was in the 1950's. It can't just stop just cuz you think you got your influences from a fancy video game. I played that game. Its cool, but Its not supposed to be that realistic cuz most of these retro steam punk Metropolis like films are based on science fiction fantasy.
@jasonlee0290 Yeah but this green screen was terriable it looks really fake when you watch it. Go watch Sin City if you haven't, Rob Rodriguez did a great job of making the Green Screen look real! This Green Screen looks really bad and fake it looks homemade, it looks too unrealistic. Hell even Stars which was filmed on a Green Screen looked Believable. Sorry this Director did a really bad job. If a Director can't make a movie look real or believable than they are a bad Director.
@skatepunkzero I watched Sin City, Watchmen and The Spirit a million times and those movies including Sky Captain actually used the same concept, equipment, budget and that same classic look. All those films have been critiqued badly on their special effects because again, "Its too unrealistic" " It looks iike a crappy like an old movie" dude...... thats the style. I know the director didn't have that much success because obviously not too many people enjoy watching a steampunk movie.
@jasonlee0290 Actually both Sin City and Watchmen were well reviewed and well Liked and actually looked good with there Special Effects, all had great acting and everything blended together well in them. Watchmen was given mostly a B review and was really well loved.
@skatepunkzero As far as the acting goes. Well I give the director a bit of credit cuz he didn't make the movie too modern. Its supposed to be a bit cheesy with classic hollywood punch lines. it was never meant to look realistic anyway. Since your a Robert Rodriguez fan I'm SURE you noticed that since he has worked with Tarantino both of their styles ALWAYS always always have that cheesy, classic, semi-crappy edited opening of every one of their films.
@jasonlee0290 You do realize the almost all of Tarantinos movies are Dark Comedies right? Thats why Death Proof had the intro where it says thunder bolt than it quickly changes to Death Proof. Thats why Pulp Ficiton had the cheap 70's Fonts for its intro. Its all part of Tarantinos Violent dark humor style. Which Tarantino is really really good at. This Director tired making a serious Diesel/steam punk movie and did a bad job.
i think they made this movie in order to remind us of what movies and life was like during the old days. thats why they made it so similar to black and white style.
I watched this movie just now and i can very much admit this movie is awsome made into a classical style. its even better if you watch it with a high definition tv!
the most underrated movie of all time. The storyline has deep meaning and roots its not for those who are dumbasses frankly. Thats partially why it gets hate cause you idiots dont understand the story.
Yes, it's CGI, but what's interesting, instead of trying to make everything look as realistic as possible, they tried to make it look as though they were using actors, model planes, model robots, and such, to make it feel like a 1930's sci fi movie. They did a damn fine job.
i know for fact that i've seen this. i wonder why i forgot that i had. i think i was too young and tired to understand any of it, lol. but i love steampunk
Terrible, terrible movie. The music was one of the most pathetic parts, in the most simple scene you hear heroic music like Indiana Jones is escaping from death in a exciting moment but not in sky captaint, woman coming out of the car and entering building, incredible heroic music?? Sorry for the bad english
I think this movie has a very nice concept, but the CGI is just plain terrible, the characters look fuzzy, and the whole thing looks like a videogame (not in a bad way). If they where to make the movie now, it would look GREAT! but in whatever year they made it in, it looks bad.
@healthyobsession801. That's because most people out there have never even seen the old black and white serials, such as Blackhawk and such. That is why they cannot appreciate such a wonderful film.
OMG! Ive been trying to fine the title to this movie for the longest. THis is the one when they find the scientist dead towards the end??? This movie was GREAT!
The problem with this movie is that it did not appeal to younger people. I loved it, my dad liked, but my kids and my wife were bored by it. A shame, all that great work in designing, modeling, lighting and compositing, not to mention great performances by the cast. Sky Captain showed us what the old 1930's serials would have looked like with quality special effects, nobody had done such a groundbreaking thing before. Peoply nowadays don't realize how difficult and time consuming CGI is.
Any movie that hitches up a dirigible to the top of an Empire State building in the first five minutes is worth watching. This is a great film. Everything in this movie(other than the actors) is blue screen, for good reason. When you're creating a fantasy, what better way to do it. Who knew about the hidden capabilities of Curtiss P-40's, not to mention British flying carriers and submersible airplanes. I love the sepiatone colour of the film. Finally, for heaven sakes, don't forget the lenscap.
@errolfan. You probably already know this, but when the Empire State building was first built it had a Zeppelin conning tower. You can see it in the original King Kong movie. I guess people back then thought airships would become widely used, in a world in which WWII never happened. The conning tower was removed long ago, and no airships ever docked on it, at least not in the real world.
@errolfan. It would have been awesome. Hard to believe that a spectacular and horrible accident like the destruction of the Hindenburg would put an end to the giant airships. Many people thought that they would be back after the war, but nobody has ever had the guts to build them that big and offer luxury commercial flights in safer helium filled rigid airships. Maybe someday...
@Humbertusmarius With our aging baby boomer population, this could be an idea whose time has come. Personally, I would love to fly anywhere in a rigid airship. Non-smoking in the hydrogen version.
@13Knives1 I liked it a lot visually, but would have been way stronger with a director who's worked with actors before. Jude Law plays 2 versions of the same guy here - and sometimes he's trying to figure out which.
Disappointing film. They tried to include too much in it -- everything in the production designer's sketchbook, the good stuff and the rightly rejected alike. Terrible, wooden love story, with juvenile sexual tension/triangle between S.C. and the two underdeveloped (except physically, that is) female leads. Note to screenwriter: Lesso is moreo on the technologio.
This movie was awesome. It was simply marketed wrong. It's an epic kid's movie, as good as The Secret of NIMH or the Lion King. Only they portrayed it as an adult's movie, so adults arrived and became disappointed, and kids didn't go see it. If you watch it expecting an awesome film for kids, you'll like it.
Great Movie , its kind of like either you get it or you dont much like Watchmen, Master and Commander which i also love, very creative entertaining movies worth watching several times and sadly probably no sequels . .
I hate it when people post "I wish they made more movies like that now" in EVERY MOVIES. This movie is what 7, 6 years old? Dammit YES there still good movies. hahah can't wait in ten years when people will says on a Slumdog Millionaire video "ah I wish there were more movies like that"
All I thought when I watched this was 0:33 WATSON!!!

@Humbertusmarius But, they could.
errolfan 1 year ago

@Humbertusmarius Well look on the brightside, at least it became on of the most awesome album covers of all time.

I don't understand the hate for this movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you watch it expecting an awesome film for kids, you'll like it.

theme dynamics and mechanics of box office hit and flop is beyond my comprehension. How can a "brilliant" film flop?

This was a good movie but you have to appreciate its very retro style homage.
I imagine a cool sequel would have Polly and Frank working together to rescue Sky Captain from some kinda mythic creatures.
I liked it more the 2nd time watching....I wish it was a trilogy.
