In reality, the German ace, "Red Baron", Baron van Richthofen was outnumbered & downed, by Canadian, Roy Evans & French gunfire (on the ground), as World War 1 was nearing. He was downed, on Sunday, April 21st, 1918, after he had shot down 80 enemy aircraft, atleast. The Treaty of Versailles was signed & the war was finalized on wha became Veterans' Day, Monday, November 11th, 1918.

@gmccord1970 makes sense, I watched a program on aircraft once and they said the DR.1 was an unstable flyer that you could never take your hands off and that the wooden sticks on the wingtips were because it was want to bounce from side to side when it landed (PS what most people don't know is the DR.1 was apparantly a Dutch design or so I hear)

To tell the truth, the Fokker DR-1 (Richtofen's triplane) was a beast to handle as far as steering control and response were concerned. Richtofen couldn't remove his hands from the controls for even a moment or he'd be corkscrewing into the ground. I think that the difficulty in handling the DR-1 was just one factor in the Red Baron's undoing.

@gmccord1970 What you say makes perfect sense. Three wings will work wonders for your RC plane's manuverability but the tradeoff comes in the increased difficulty of handling. I don't think von Richtofen himself would be much surprised by your reaction either.

Roy Brown (a Canadian ancestor of Charlie) was credited with shooting down the Baron, but the autopsy showed the bullet came from the ground. (He was hit below the right armpit and the bullet exited through the chest near the left nipple). Most likely it was the Australian gunners, although nobody is certain which one.

Still, I vote for the Beagle.

@dallan007 Actually, "Roy" was a nickname for Captain Brown. His real given name was Arthur.

On the 21st of April, Richtofen singled out and pursued one of Brown's wingmates, Lieutenant May. Brown flew to May's rescue and unleashed a barrage at the Baron. Richtofen took evasive action to avoid Brown's fire, then resumed his pursuit of May.

At this point, the Australians on the ground at Vaux-sur-Somme enter the picture.

Most people died because they made the same mistake with the Baron that our boys did with the Japanese Zero, getting into a turn fight...in a turn battle the DR.1 Will have you every time...what most didnt know was that if they dove or flew straight...they'd outrun the slower Dr.1

@jeffhardy0963 Nonsense. Richthofen was involved in fewer dogfights than most. Most of his victims didn't even know he was there in the first place. That's how a real ace does it, the first the enemy knows about you should be a burst of fire between his shoulderblades . . .
