This is a scream to anyone who grew up in the Sixties. My brothers and me always thought that, somehow, they had actual people's lips behind the pictures. I think the technology was invented by a photographer as a way to animate animal mouths speaking.
Hey man its all in fun, I'm 53 and I was watching clutch when I was 6 years old. I guess he must have been a role model since my dad could have given 3 shits about me. Thanks for the reply. By the way, Wazzz up!
First, 9 out of 10 people have never seen Clutch Cargo, Second, they can't associate beer with ANY kid related programing. I knew they would never use it, but it was fun to do just the same!
Thanks for the positive comments!
Please feel free to check out my other YouTube offerings!
@JohnsonBrand2000 For the time, it was great stuff...and not so cheap. That was 1959 you know....no computers....no hand calculators....you actually had to do math. Can you do math?
Well, I'm not going to diminish the the talents and capabilities of the people behind Clutch Cargo, but to pretend that this is as good as it got in 1959 is just silly. Look at the stuff Chuck Jones, or even UPA were doing at this time. Their budgets were limited, but they made the most of their resources. Besides, '59 wasn't the dark ages. Computers and calculators did exist. They were just large! Did you work on Clutch Cargo?
This is an excellent take on one of the weirdest cartoons ever! Even as a kid, I thought it was so "Huh? what's with their mouths?" that I watched it all the more. Great idea, very funny!!(this, not cartoon)-; well, it too, in a campy way
See my post, JohnsonBrand 2000. Clutch Cargo was a cartoon that was on TV back in the 60's. It was one of the cartoons featured on Sally Starr's Popeye Theater on WFIL (now WPVI), Channel 6, in Philadelphia.
I captured stills from the original show, imported them into Photoshop to clean up the backgrounds and painted out the mouths. Then I shot my friend lip-syncing to the original audio. I loaded the all the parts into an AVID editing system and put it together.
I actually did this when the "Wassup" spot was still current several years ago. These days I could do a much better job compositing the lips, but what the hell. It's still fun as it is.
I'm glad so many people are enjoying it. Up until a few months ago, only about 10 people saw it, and half of them had no idea who Clutch Cargo even was!!
Well done???? This is lack of imagination....Can't you leave the classics alone?. Bunch of non-creative morons that have to copy everything because their brains would not know the word creativity if it bit them on the ass...
Actually this project was part of an assignment I got from Leo Burnett, Budweiser's advertising agency. Bud was so pleased with the Superfriends spoof that was circulating the internet, they were interested in exploring other ways to spoof their popular spot. Needles to say, this one was rejected, but many other ideas came out of this exercise including the parrot spot, and the spot with the old ladies.

It was originally a short film. Then some ad guys saw it and sold the idea to Budweiser. The rest is history.

How did you make this video? How did you make Clutch Cargo, a cartoon from back in the 60's, talk like today? How did you do this?
