  • If bird strikes by wind turbines are such a problem why do the RSPB, probably the most respected voice on the topic, object to only just over 1 in 14 (7%) on such grounds?

Go to RSPB, "our work" (at the top), "policy" and scroll down to "wind farms" if you dont believe me.

  • THE RSPB HAVE OBJECTED TO THIS WINDFARM as it is in the wrong place. They are very concerned for the Golden Plover which over winter in the fields where the windfarm would be built. Golden Plover are on the RSPB red list.

The starling you can see in this video are also on the RSPB red list. There are other endangered bird species using the area as well - gulls fly over every day from the coast to drink the fresh water from the reservoir. Hen Harrier over winter here too.

  • Fuck the birds. Eat Chicken..

  • You know what would be a greater concern to the bird population? Killing our earth with excessive consumption and utilisation of non-renewable energy.

Saying that wind farms are modern technology destroying heritage is ridiculously off the mark. What is it about wind farms that these people believe not to 'work'? Can't help but notice the demographic of the anti-wind farm fella's... Could these folks be a wee bit fearful of change? Smarten up guys.

  • Please don't use the term NIMBY unless you live in a beautiful area that is being invaded by hundreds of industrial turbines. You have no right. People who say screw the NIMBYs are usually energy-sucking urbanites that won't do the simple things (unplug your gadgets, turn off your lights) to save the lousy 5%-10% that will be provided by all these expensive, invasive machines. Do you have any friends who are real people who live in a wind farm? I do and they hate it.

  • I don't live in, near or within view of a wind farm.

  • blah blah blah!!!!!!! just get used to it

  • I don't necessarily agree with the viewpoint of the people featured in this documentary, but I must say this is a great video!

It is nicely composed and edited. The camera work is top notch. This is BBC quality work. It's nice to see such a quality production on YouTube.

    Cheers!

  • Birds will soon learn to fly over or around these - like they did with powerlines and chimnies :-)

They are not all bird brains - hehe

  • Chernobyl alone has poisoned 100's of 1'000s ans will continue to do so for 100,000 years.

  • Noise - you don't know the half of it!!! Check out this Nuke power plant carrying out its regular siren testing, see NHEQaXqaIv4, it does this regularly!!! And anyway, why does it need a siren, is it to warn everyone to run for their lives when it all starts to go wrong!! Give me a wind farm any day!!

  • "And anyway, why does it need a siren, is it to warn everyone to run for their lives when it all starts to go wrong!! Give me a wind farm any day!!"

Here's a fun fact, wind turbines kill more people per TWh than nuclear plants even if you include a certain soviet plant that was illegal to build in the west since the 1960's.

  • redneck!

  • they produce 300kw an hour that's allot dumb ass

  • "they produce 300kw an hour that's allot dumb ass"

300 kw an hour is a nonsensical unit, that's an acceleration power production.

If they're rated for 300 kW, that means they produce between slightly than zero and up to 300 kW with an average of about 100 kW(capacity factor is between .2 and .35).

100 kW is a pittence. That's the power consumption of about 3 cars at cruising speed on the highway and less than a single car when it is accelerating.

  • Well, most large windmills these days produce between 1 and 3 MW, at least around here. There are even smaller islands here in Denmark (with 1000's of people !) who get ALL their electrical energy this way ( from 3large ones). A normal household spends around 0.5 - 1 kW on AVERAGE.

300 kw an hour is nonsense, yes ;-)

Many people - including many journalists ! - get units of power and energy mixed up this way ( thinking 300 kw is energy - and then

expecting it to take an hour to produce ).

  • would you rather have a nuke plant in your back yard?

  • How can anyone who drives a gaswasting terrorist supporter call wind turbines a "blot on the landscape"? Motorcars are the blot on the landscape. They kill tens of millions of birds, and tens of thousands of people each year. World oil production has peaked and will soon go into irreversible decline. It is amazing how ignorant wind-NIMBYs are.

  • Turbines are a low maintenance form of power generation that can run unattended. 8,000,000 birds are killed every year by flying in to things like power station cooling towers (I know!).Most people love turbines, and I speak for the 90odd percent majority in my appreciation of these beautiful machines. Clv, contracted engineer to the power industry.

  • Nothing wrong with wind farms, we have plenty in Cornwall. Good arguments about the lack of pollution etc... but with the biggest startling population in Europe? Not everything is down to pounds and pence. We could simply use less power? (switches off computer to save electricity)

  • Thank you Birdman. I am all for green energy but not at the expense of millions of birds - I've seen these birds myself and the windfarm is planned for exactly the same place as the birds coming in to roost. It will be a twice daily massacre and millions of birds killed - starlings are already on the Red List of endangered birds so this proposal cannot be allowed. The planning application is now submitted and letters of objection need to get to North Cornwall District Council by 28 Cornwall.

  • hey birdman, just how much does BP pay you and your buds every month to bitch about FREE,non polluting energy?

noise, birds, ground vibration,...those are some pretty weak arguments in light of slowly killing this old woman(and ourselves) we're calling earth....don't ya' think?????

  • six protesters and six vehicle what carbon footprint have they left on our moor?

  • And how are you going to power your homes?

Maybe you like better the cheap energy from COAL (fresh and clean) or Nuclear (not that it is bad, but it's finite)?

The world has to go forward and wind is one of the ways.

And the arguments about the birds are all very shabby.

  • kkl

  • they say they are inefficient. in what context? they pay back the embodied energy matter of months, and wind turbines generally take up 1% of the land on which they are built. many wind farms have grazing etc on them. they also require a negligable amount of manpower to run. or energy for that matter. compare that to a coal power station or nuclear. how much energy comes from those weighted against all the manpower, energy, space etc it takes to build, operate, and decommission them.

  • Where did you get the idea that wind farms make backk their cost quickly? If it wasn't for massive government subsidies no wind farms would be built. The people speaking in this video are correct. Industial wind is not worth the all the costs involved. The investors put up the money because the returns are so good it makes them hyperventilate. The only reason for that is the return comes from the taxpayer, not the wind.

  • Pure NIMBYism. As mytm says, they are completely selfish, disguising there own selfishness as fighting for some cause. It says it all really, more than once they mention not wanting them in their area. Yet have no real arguments against the concept as a whole.

  • first words are ugly and inefficient- both matter of opinions.being a renewable energy engineer having to listen to this crap disturbs me.its said'minute amount'- well its a step in the right way.i ask you, irresponsible polluters,to look into the eyes of your children and tell them how you openly opposed a clean source of energy, for they are the people who will suffer. we have merely borrowed the planet from them.the most common words in the video are 'i dont want',how selfish, irresponsible

  • I wholeheartedly agree - especially with your last sentence. The views of some will have to be put aside for the wider benefit of the many.

  • its an eye soar to know your not polluting the earth with Cleanly made energy? anyone with any common sense would know a blade spinning a mile an hour isnt going to do shit to a bird you guys are fags

  • Unfortunately there is no way to stop this madness.

  • Im with the Anti windfarm @ davidstow! I love the place! Wev already got windmills at Laneast! I hope it doesnt happen?
