This will always be better than Whitney's version. Dolly wrote it about the break up of her singing partnership with Porter Wagoner. Other songs you should check out if you don't think she writes her own songs, "Coat of Many Colors" from the heart about her childhood and "Jolene" about her husband being tempted early in their marriage.

The pop, soft rock, blues, and soul markets Whitney targeted are much larger then the country music market Dolly has focused on. When sales are adjusted proportional to the size of the chosen markets, Dolly easily achieved greater success.

Whitney Houston sings "I will Always Love You" loud and hit some high notes (in her original version, not the crapped out Seoul tour version lol) - I give you that. Yet Dolly's version give 100 times more emotion. If you ask 100 brokenhearted people which version reflects their feeling, I bet you 99/100 will say it's Dolly's.
To me, Whitney's original was good, but it's a pop song. Dolly's reachs another level.

I have heard that version. That came out in the 80's when the movie was made in Austin, Tx. I set up the security for the movie set.
Dolly's original version came out in 1974. It is almost the same as this version, but a bit diff in parts.
