Embryo research is no good. However, if a woman is going to have a period might as well have a use for it. On the topic of gross, in the first place. Why do we find things gross? Why do we find things to be gross? For example boogers, or mucous can carry disease, not washing your hands after touching yourself. Mainly to me "grossness" comes from hygiene. If its not hygienic its gross. So after its been in the lab and harvested and free from disease no longer gross,
Though the source is gross if not cleaned and taken care of. Also for all you women who wanted pride for being a woman. It has also been discovered that sperm can be created from bone marrow of women and the result is that it only produces women. So what do you need us men for at all now?

I think its a good idea if it saves lives. As for the whole baby soul thing who cares COME ON PEOPLE MOVE FORWARD STOP LIVING IN THE FUCKING MIDDLE AGES Bible bashing fucks. YEA THATS RIGHT WHAT ARE YA GONNA DO??? NOTHING!!!! Yea i am for stem cell research.
well wtf do they do at the abortion clinics with the embryo's?no matter what religion women will have abortions it is a choice and sometimes a sensible one from what ive seen from some mothers
The Menstral source sounds like a good idea. Regardless of your religous views, it's a dangerous precedent to start destroying human lives to save others. It seems some people are so desperate in this country that they'd be willing to clone themselves and chain a spare parts version of themselves in the closet.
I think stem cells are an exciting potential discovery and hope that the hype will be worth it eventually.
The menstrul source sounds like a good idea ..Yes agree. People saying "eww " your dumb why because you were from a women and in that women there was menstrual blood involved. its promoting life.
if the menstrual stemcells came from you, then whoptiedoo! hahaha but seriously, i dont think it matters, it just like eating some vegetables, they dont look good, somedont taste good, some even not smell good, but looks doesnt matter because in the end of the day, its good for you...
She's just as plastic as the chick with the fake permagrin pimping the radio stations on the tv commercials that play the songs nobody will disagree with at work. Big yawn to her, the fake enthusiasm, AND to boring music!
lol they didnt 'invent' them . odd word to use. they just have the patenting over the work that a lab grp has done in 1st reporting the isolation ofa discrete stem-like progenitor cell population from the menstrual blood. they are a candidate stem cell population based on various proliferation and differentation assays, thats all.
hi, not exactly to whom or what u r asking but if ur meaing about differentiation, there is symmetrical and non-symmetric cell divisions, the exact models ofhow stem cells replicate is still currently debated. but if u ONLY make transit amplifying cells (part wy differentiated) you would exhaust the stem cell pool, so some divisions need to make more stem cells for maintenance also, and some cells become daughter cells that get more specialised. the model will vary in diff tissues. Daniel :)
I say that those people who still wish to believe in "souls" should go back to the middle ages, to a time of famine and plague. Because religious beliefs are backward superstitions, they are undeserving of respect, and it's such superstitious garbage as "do we have souls?" that is hindering the advancement of our species. The middle ages held a place for such rubbish, however the present should not.
Cool... personally, I don't care where the stem cells come from (OK, maybe I'll pass on the poo stem cells). I think that the research is too important to overlook any potential source of stem cells.
ya i think someday i am just gonna clone me a new body. Then of course i am gonna just transfer the good memories i have into it along with life knowledge that i have gained and all the educational knowledge that i have.
Well Stem cells saved my life in a way. I had a transfusion of my own healthy stem cells after I had High Dose Chemotherapy. I think it's worth it to harvest stem cells in anyway possible..even if it's gross/contriversal. Stem cells can help to possibly cure may diseases that we have no current cure for like Stroke and some extreme forms of cancer.
in the first 30 sec, ".are undifferentiated cell.....without differentiate" i was thinking you and J.madden should be friends.lol stem cells are particular cells that by the process of mitotic cell division differentiate into complex specialized cells.
i wanted to know if your using differentiate?, i can use all dr mombo jombo but that is the proces a cell goes to from being one cell to a complex cell type. if the cells have "ability to replicate without differentiating, they just cant, its medicaly imposible, please let me know if this is what you ment?
Your forgetting stem cells from umbilical cords. They have been used successfully to treat children with several types of cancers. The whole Embryonic stem cell argument was nothing more than a money grab by those scientist that are publicly funded or eligible for grants at the cost of tax payers. Bush's limitations on funding did not constitute a ban. The private sector can and were always able to develop as many lines of embryonic stem cells as they please.
Wrong.........leukemia is a form of blood cancer that will spread throughout the organs and bone marrow. Cord Blood stem cells have cured many forms of leukemia in children under the age of ten......Did you have any other misleading facts on life?
well, stem cells have also been known to come from bone marrow. this is learned in basic biology because where to we get our cells from originally?...the marrow cells are blank so that if there is a lack of a certain cell in the body, the brain sends a message to the marrow to produce that type of cell. So i don't even see why embryos should be used, it is just wrong.
marrow cells are not blank. pls read up before mentioning heresay. MSC are just 1 form of adult stem cells. they arejust the most widely experimented with, for longest time. ive worked with them for 6+yrs. they only make certain cells types by default, and others if pushed, in the dish.
I was just mentioning something I learned in biology that my teacher had said oh about six years ago. the technology has advanced since then, but it was still an option at that point for RESEARCH. I wasn't saying that the cure could be there instead of in embryos. I was just showing that all the discussion is about embryonic stem cells when you could get them from other areas, now this being found in menstrual blood will lessen the debates hopefully.
no not really. ES and adult cells are quite different, so its just simmply ntot a case of comarping or that 1 beats the other. its very much more likely that they will both help medical advances together, like concurrent streams. as far as 'recent' advances.. well MSC biology and the niche hypothesis have been around since late 70s.. so marrow stromal SC and HSCs have been studied a long time. read up, its good stuff.
With the controversial issue of embryonic stem cells behind us, we can set aside the ethical and religious argument and let scientific research take steps forward.
As someone who adamantly opposed stem cell research with human embryos(I believe life begins at conception), I welcome the research from non-destructive collection and research of stem cells.
I dont wanna sound stupid but either way, we should rather try to find cure for these diseases otherwise we're gonna die for cancer - probably all of us. the prediction is then in about 200 years or maybe even earlier, every second person on the planet will have cancer. and of course, this is not only issue concerning us.
btw - just fyi scientist were already able to cure rats suffered with paralysation this way. . .
so.. I didnt mind embryos, I dont mind womens blood either :))
Why not believe like Darwin and Einstein did,,, that their really is a creator!?!?! man can't make a blade of grass (by the way,, its already been done lol), not to mention all animate life both macro, micro, and animal, and, botanical!! Come on,, its one thing to say one species developed into a related improved species, but, its scientifically impossible for genetically different life to cross over into another dna blueprint! thats a fact!! Scientific fact! So,, so much for evolution!
Just a note for those who care for the actual details here. i read the journal article by the main grp who did the work this is all based on anda re funded by/ working under medistem - and its actualy rather iffy, thier actual cell isolation methods and in vitro (no in vivio work) differentiation assays for assessing the cells developmental potential. bottom line- not world lcass great research yet, and very early results. ill pose the link to the pdf article to read their work next! :) Dan.
Hey dan, not to be a dick but that paper won Paper of the Year from BioMed central. When you finish your PhD and get that kind of award then you can start pissing on others work, till then shut your trap
not to be a dick ? haha. well lets not make it personal. i wasnt pissing on their work i gave it my critical view as a person who understands the nitty gritty of thier work. i never said the work was crap. just very preliminary. msg me if you want a real analysis and you know the science. considering we share similar basal views (saw ut page/faves) no need to get nasty, is there?
Much like other innovations that threaten the elitist pocketbook and politicians "base", it's a victim of archaic and nonsensical failed policies and counter lobbying. Much like the stymied "green" technologies that in the past appeared to suffer from suffocation at the hands of powerful oil and car companies and other corporate constituencies, i fear stem cell research threatens similarly powerful corporate entities namely "big drug" and "big insurance". Let's pray that innovators prevail.
EPR89, right. Because they can't be hurting something that will be thrown away, if it is not used. Contrary to what people believe IVF "kills" embryos. Normally 16 embryos are created, 8 are used per trial, but only 1 of 8 "take". meaning 7/8 embryos DIE. If the mother is happy with her child/children then she can elect to have the embryo used for stem cell research. If not used for R&D then they will be THROWN AWAY!!! So I dont see peoples issue with stem cells. source: my biotechnology teacher
The scientists managed to create nine different kinds of tissues with these stem cells. Less than with those from embryos. Of course, this is enough to help many people but not everyone. If you ask me it would be a crime to let someone die although you had an oportunity to help him. It's very unlikley that the used embryos already have perception but the ill people have. The used embryos would die anyway because they use the ones that were created but not used in "in vitro fertilizations".
I believe I saw an article the other day about using embryonic stem cells without actually killing the embryo. You just have to be very careful and take a few of them and then grow them in a suitable medium.
In any case I have no issues about using aborted lifeless husks that get thrown in the trash, although if you are against abortion then you have to be against using the stem cells, otherwise you come out sounding hypocritical.

I don't know where I'll be then doc, he said, but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."
Ted Striker: "Excuse me doc, I got a plane to land."
have you ever heard of planaria its a flatworm that can grow into two perfect seperate worms when the head is cut off because it contains thousands of stem cells that are of similar value of embryonic cells.despite needing more research they could end the debate on morals etc and diseses such as parkinsons etc.look up immortal worms here on youtube.
cut up the dead babies. its not like they're getting any use. the thing that bugs me the most is when people bitch about embryonic stem cell research is its not like someone is out their talking mothers into giving up their unborn children for science. these women are throwing out these dead babies already. I know it sounds harsh but who cares. there are too many of us on this planet already. our species isn't going to die out because of abortions but it might from disease. what then jesus?
It's also important to note that you can get stem cells from the placenta after a birth, which doesn't involve killing an embryo either. The whole embryonic stem cell controversy is just an excuse to get votes.
it really is, these neo cons that use the non sense to get votes don't care about human life, most of them are willing to send our troops off to war and kill hundreds of thousands of babies without batting an eye.
Not only do they not care about human lives (born or unborn), they also don't care about Americas future ... or perhaps they are just not sufficiently intelligent to grasp the implication of raising artifical barriers to technological progress for nothing more than short term gain.
The creationists that rail against evolution, the "pro lifer" that protests stem cell research and the treasonous, hypocritical theist that harbours nothing but contempt for science, is stealing Americas future.
If the embryonic stem cells are going to be destroyed anyway, is it better to use them for medical research that might save human lives in the future or just destroy them? I think we should use any available stem cells for research. I haven't heard about the new source of stem cells you mention. But if they are also useful for research, I support that.
Actually, if possible, I would like to get links or book reco's to the research in which you get this information from. I always am very interested in what you speak of whoever maybe my searches would be quicker if I knew were you got your information from. Bah ! What do I know anyway =(
The new thing liberals say to sound cool is that they believe in science (global warming, stem cells, etc.)Why then are so many against medical testing on animals? Isn't that science? They should say they only believe in science when it doesn't make them sad.
I think you're conflating two separate issues. The question isn't whether animal testing can be used to further our understanding of medicine--clearly, it can and it does. The question in this case is an ethical one: Does the end (scientific progress) justifies the means (causing animals to experience pain and/or die)?
This might really offend big govt types but this country has been doing a ton of research into stem cells without the govt. Many big private companies have been researching stem cells in the hopes of curing diseases. I guess we have been conditioned to think that if govt ain't doing it then it isn't being done. Oh well.
As for the embryo question, I believe all life is sacred, and I know that I could not destroy a life in order to save another. To me, that's just wrong. But, if this concept works, it would be such a medical miracle. Let's hope and pray that it does!
Do embryos have souls?
Well, look at it this way...
God sacrificed his son to save the world. (That's the story, right?)
I don't see much difference in that and sacrificing and embryo to save people from cancer.

People saying "eww " your dumb why because you were from a women and in that women there was menstrual blood involved. its promoting life.

hi, not exactly to whom or what u r asking but if ur meaing about differentiation, there is symmetrical and non-symmetric cell divisions, the exact models ofhow stem cells replicate is still currently debated. but if u ONLY make transit amplifying cells (part wy differentiated) you would exhaust the stem cell pool, so some divisions need to make more stem cells for maintenance also, and some cells become daughter cells that get more specialised. the model will vary in diff tissues.

I think it's worth it to harvest stem cells in anyway possible..even if it's gross/contriversal. Stem cells can help to possibly cure may diseases that we have no current cure for like Stroke and some extreme forms of cancer.

in the first 30 sec, ".are undifferentiated cell.....without differentiate" i was thinking you and J.madden should be friends.lol stem cells are particular cells that by the process of mitotic cell division differentiate into complex specialized cells.
falconi1026 3 years ago
i wanted to know if your using differentiate?, i can use all dr mombo jombo but that is the proces a cell goes to from being one cell to a complex cell type. if the cells have "ability to replicate without differentiating, they just cant, its medicaly imposible, please let me know if this is what you ment?
falconi1026 3 years ago
Your forgetting stem cells from umbilical cords. They have been used successfully to treat children with several types of cancers. The whole Embryonic stem cell argument was nothing more than a money grab by those scientist that are publicly funded or eligible for grants at the cost of tax payers. Bush's limitations on funding did not constitute a ban. The private sector can and were always able to develop as many lines of embryonic stem cells as they please.

cord blood doesnt cure cancer...chemotherapy does...the cord blood only provides new blood stem cells
lighthouseshines 3 years ago
Wrong.........leukemia is a form of blood cancer that will spread throughout the organs and bone marrow. Cord Blood stem cells have cured many forms of leukemia in children under the age of ten......Did you have any other misleading facts on life?
luke55664 3 years ago 5
well, stem cells have also been known to come from bone marrow. this is learned in basic biology because where to we get our cells from originally?...the marrow cells are blank so that if there is a lack of a certain cell in the body, the brain sends a message to the marrow to produce that type of cell. So i don't even see why embryos should be used, it is just wrong.
monkey0415 3 years ago
marrow cells are not blank. pls read up before mentioning heresay. MSC are just 1 form of adult stem cells. they arejust the most widely experimented with, for longest time. ive worked with them for 6+yrs. they only make certain cells types by default, and others if pushed, in the dish.
danblash 3 years ago
I was just mentioning something I learned in biology that my teacher had said oh about six years ago. the technology has advanced since then, but it was still an option at that point for RESEARCH. I wasn't saying that the cure could be there instead of in embryos. I was just showing that all the discussion is about embryonic stem cells when you could get them from other areas, now this being found in menstrual blood will lessen the debates hopefully.
monkey0415 3 years ago
no not really.

ATHFfan2003 3 years ago
I dont wanna sound stupid but either way, we should rather try to find cure for these diseases otherwise we're gonna die for cancer - probably all of us. the prediction is then in about 200 years or maybe even earlier, every second person on the planet will have cancer. and of course, this is not only issue concerning us.
btw - just fyi scientist were already able to cure rats suffered with paralysation this way. . .
so.. I didnt mind embryos, I dont mind womens blood either :))

I believe in stem cell research whether it's from embryos or your period.
svanvolk 3 years ago

In any case I have no issues about using aborted lifeless husks that get thrown in the trash, although if you are against abortion then you have to be against using the stem cells, otherwise you come out sounding hypocritical.

cut up the dead babies. its not like they're getting any use. the thing that bugs me the most is when people bitch about embryonic stem cell research is its not like someone is out their talking mothers into giving up their unborn children for science. these women are throwing out these dead babies already. I know it sounds harsh but who cares. there are too many of us on this planet already. our species isn't going to die out because of abortions but it might from disease. what then jesus?

It's also important to note that you can get stem cells from the placenta after a birth, which doesn't involve killing an embryo either. The whole embryonic stem cell controversy is just an excuse to get votes.
colossus999 3 years ago 5
it really is, these neo cons that use the non sense to get votes don't care about human life, most of them are willing to send our troops off to war and kill hundreds of thousands of babies without batting an eye.
czorbin 3 years ago 4
Not only do they not care about human lives (born or unborn), they also don't care about Americas future ... or perhaps they are just not sufficiently intelligent to grasp the implication of raising artifical barriers to technological progress for nothing more than short term gain.
The creationists that rail against evolution, the "pro lifer" that protests stem cell research and the treasonous, hypocritical theist that harbours nothing but contempt for science, is stealing Americas future.
TheModestAgnostic 3 years ago
If the embryonic stem cells are going to be destroyed anyway, is it better to use them for medical research that might save human lives in the future or just destroy them? I think we should use any available stem cells for research. I haven't heard about the new source of stem cells you mention. But if they are also useful for research, I support that.

The new thing liberals say to sound cool is that they believe in science (global warming, stem cells, etc.)Why then are so many against medical testing on animals? Isn't that science? They should say they only believe in science when it doesn't make them sad.
whitechocolate367 3 years ago
I think you're conflating two separate issues. The question isn't whether animal testing can be used to further our understanding of medicine--clearly, it can and it does. The question in this case is an ethical one: Does the end (scientific progress) justifies the means (causing animals to experience pain and/or die)?
