  • Now THAT's an entrance!!!!

  • Love her eye make-up and...her ;)

  • At 23 she had a sound quality and musical ability that was beyond anything that existed in music at that time. This performance is so extraordinary and is probably the best interpretation of this song she ever sang because of what she does with it live. AMAZING. This is why she will be deemed the greatest singer of the 20th and 21st Century.

  • Fuck this?

  • I cannot even imagine someone doesn't like her singing

  • Aaah. Remember that thing called "singing"?

  • Sheer magic:)

  • I was 9 when this aired on TV. I was a big Barbra fan from the first time I saw her. In the US Air Force, I met a girl who looked just like Barbra! This is just when "A Star is Born" came out, so I was head-over-heals for that girl. Too bad she was more of a Kiss fan than classical music. Still, great memories, from a great singer and actress. She's like "butter."

  • Pure Magic, Pure talent, Pure Love,............Our Barbra!

  • i love her entrance. :)

  • I love how the violinists tap their violins at the end of the number.

  • music holds the world together ;)

  • i get goose bumps listening to this and my eyes get filled up with tears.she is really remarkable.her gift is as a rare stone.a diamond.

  • I'm a gay guy and love this.....funny all the posts are emphasizing their sexual orientations.....you straights are funny.

  • Her phrasing is genius!!

  • The classic voice of Barbra. The Consummate Artist. The Living Legend. There are many divas from different eras but there is only one Songbird for all seasons. Bravo, Ms. Streisand! :)

  • What I love about Barbra is that not only does she have one of the best voices ever, but when she sings you believe every note comes out of her. She not only sings the song, she performs it too.

  • the music I grew up with is pure crap compared to this

  • Its overwhelming to perfection !!! Feel like I hit with a shot of ENERGY from the great beyond.

    BRAVO!

  • i'm 47 and i been loving her since 1968.

  • Pure magic and one of a kind! Long live Barbra! :)

  • Barbra has to be my favourite female singer... ever.

I would really like to see a young girl named Charice sing this piece. For an 18 year old, she knocks Whitney and Mariah songs out of the park... but what about the best of the best... Streisand!

  • I was luky enough to grow up in NYC in this era. My dear parents believed that I should see culture, so when they took me to a Broadway show, which then did not cost that much more than a first run movie, you saw Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet in Camelot, and when they let me watch TV, the great Gleason was on Saturday nights and Johnny Carson had guests ranging from Bob Hope to Groucho Marx and July Garland still performed. This performance is right out of that era-long gone, but not forgotten

  • Tthis performance truly amazing. Watch her left hand at :20 - :22 seconds. She actually tells conductor (the great Peter Matz) to bring the orchestra down a bit on the first chord before her entrance. Listen to brilliant phrasing at 1:33 -1:41. Of course the phrasing at 2:25 -end is so extraordinary that it is sheer genious. Listen to where she lands the words, "luckiest people". She never performed it this way again and that's why this performance may be the greatest "People" of all.

  • @djk1814

great stuff - you're right -I ike when she playfully touches the violin when she sings the "children"line. Thanks for posting!

  • at 2:01 where she opens her eyes, it's like "Bam!"

  • Astonishing :)

  • In the close up she looks so much like that other gorgeous woman Lee Grant. I could never forget that lovely actress.

  • Is it me or is she like really really pretty?

  • @LoveeMandy She's gorgeous.

  • My own Barbra with the honey voice. Thanks for this black & white. She looks super still, more sedate and relaxed and was still singing well up to her retirement. (I think she retired, didn't she?

  • I Love how the Young People Love HER I'm 47 & I heard her at 13 & Loved HEr Ever since She to me the Greatest Entertainer/Singer EVEr on the Planet

  • Good for you, FATE522, that you recognize the superior quality of 60's music. I make sure my children benefit; I'm so grateful for CD's, records and YouTube. The lyrics of this shining song which explains that LIFE IS MOST WORTH LIVING WHEN ONE CAN TREASURE OTHER PEOPLE. Most of the songs at the time had these positive, uplifting words set to lovely melodies. And no one sang them better than Barbra S. Peace & Love, Joy & Prosperity to ALL!

  • Probably the greatest singing artist of all time.

  • I saw a drink coaster made out of

this 45 rpm record. It's on Etsy

Just look up the song title to see

it. Very COOL! I LOVE this movie

    and the song!

  • Her voice is just beautiful. She's so talented!

  • One of my favorite singers of all time. I was lucky to meet her in 1990. We talked, she thought I was from Brooklyn. I ses 'Naaaah., em from Detroit, But I been to Brooklyn. I told her it was my dad who raised me on Television, watching Bogart, Cagney The 3 stooges, Marx bros, ect. And that he been to Brooklyn after the war. She told me I was a very intresting person shes' ever met.

  • @MrMotownmanny That is a fabulous story! I would've passed out had I met Barbra!

  • I loved this time ! wish i could have been around then.

  • one of the best..

  • I am seventeen years old. I'm thankful I know what music is, what it can create, and how special it can be. This song is timeless, especially its lyrics.

  • I'm the same way!

  • Talent personified.

  • Great song :) .. I'm a 90's child but I have to respect the greats in music^^ ... Barbra is an phenomenal singer! I have to thank MJ for this tho, cuz I hadnt heard it before he said he liked it and the first time i heard it , i fell in love :)! I might have heard it when i was younger, cuz my mother is a huge fan of music and she loves barbra :)

  • she had a thing for sailor attire at that time but no matter shes the best, she shaped my life for sure and still does.

  • I love her voice and I love her politics. She always advocates for us underdogs! Go Barbra. We love you!

  • @GarlandJudyFan Yea I feel i was born in the wrong era and I'm 28. Also a huge Judy Garland fan, also a Liza minnelli fan and met her. Music now doesn't have the same quality to it anymore

  • @balto4 I know what you mean :( Im 16 and this is the music I listen to. I love to watch these videos, but they make me sad that I missed it...as well as making me totally disgusted by today's world

  • @NewY0rkLivin I know, all of the music I like is from the past :( The only new artists I like are lady gaga and Prince Poppycock

  • @balto4 U r so gay and so right.

  • @adrienne6903 LOL I'm actually a straight female. Though people have thought I was a gay man based on my musical tastes ;-)

  • @balto4 Such a elegant taste for 28 yrs old straight girl. Hail to that.

  • @adrienne6903 I'm a straight man who loves Barbra's music.

  • @CMHism I'm straight girl who love her and Mr. Manillow since 1980.

  • @balto4 i agree completely the depth of meaning in the voices back then was way better!

  • @sespringstead24 Yes voices weren't mechanical back then

  • @GarlandJudyFan: I think its awesome to see such support and understanding thank you. :) Do you ever feel sad for Judy Garland's life since your a fan of her?

  • I like her singing but that's where it ends.

  • I'm not a fan of Barbra Streisand, but I can't deny the beautiful voice. :)

  • God, this performance just gives me chills everytime I hear it! :)

  • The closest thing we had in the last 30 years to Barbra, with the higher chest voice control and impeccable sound quality was Whitney Houston, and still it's nowhere near as good as Barbra.

This woman looks almost like she's possessed when she sings, like as if she taps into some weird part of her mind :S

  • @UpdownCourt09 Celine > Whitney. Barbra is entrancing and unique.

  • jayellefarmer, I played guitar for 43 years, and I believe we are operating under different terminology! The Beatles & Stones are definitely rock and/or R & B, and compared to them, Barbra is "popular"...Sinatra was mostly popular, as well. Every generation redefines the labels, but the music is GREAT, don't you agree??

  • the music nowadays is pure crap! i wish it was as beautiful and nice as it was back then! and i am very young.

  • such a pure perfect voice is very very rare nowadays...

  • musicalrich1, i completely agree with you, Barbra set the standard with that performance even for herself in future performances! I've always liked the way she expresses emotion through her singing, if you listen to her with your eyes closed you understand what she wants you to feel without having watched the performance. know what i mean?

  • brelfan, you make some interesting points. But there are those fans who'll say she never lost that "magic"...I remember getting interested in contemporary music in 1965, and always thinking this performance is the standard by which other pop songs are measured!

  • @musicalrich1

    >this performance is the standard by which other pop songs are measured!

Nonesense. Streisand is not a pop singer - she's a cabaret/musical artist - and I love her too, I might add - but "pop singer" she is *not* -even though she IS popular as an artist - *pop is not her genre.* If you want to make such a statement for that time (early 60's) you would absolutely need to consider the Beatles and Stones. They were the 2 bands that set the pop music standard for those who came after

  • I think she was great for that time and place. After a while, she became much too self conscious and lost her humor. But I think that she took expression to a new level. Interesting to hear her with Ray Charles, who also was extremely expressive, but much more subtle. Still, when hers worked, it worked as well as anything. She could conquer a song. Also, had a beautiful, piercing quality to her voice. She kept that over time.

  • @brelfan as absurd as it seems to criticize anything about a person capable of doing what she does in this clip (and countless other performances), i totally agree with you about her losing something when she stopped being able to laugh at herself. i also wish she had allowed others to direct her in more films throughout her career. nevertheless, there is something so thoroughly captivating about even her substandard efforts. i've been absolutely mesmerized by her voice for over 30 years.

  • There will never be another B.S. ever again.

  • shes not ugly at all

  • Why do you say that? Please help me to understand how you came to that conculsion.

  • MY Favorite, and BEST Singer EVER on the Planet!!!!

  • Sound performance!

  • Hearing her sing this song sent chills up spine she is so passionate and has one if not the most beautiful voices in the world.

  • One of my favorite songs of the 1960s !!!

  • Simply perfection!

  • I love Barbra Streisand. She is so Excellet, and has beautiful voice. My favorite is JUDY GARLAND!!!!! But Barbra is sensational in her own right.

  • sure! why not?!? i've been called awesome a couple of times in my life lol.

  • a couple of times?! You should be called awesome all the time.

  • The gown was designed by Ms. Streisand herself and is blue wool with white linen collar and cuffs trimmed in blue ribbon and red bow which streams down the front of the dress.

I saw a picture of it when it went up for auction a few years ago. It sold for around 15 grand.

  • With them just let one kid fall down and seven mothers faint... She truly is like butta.

  • Thank you for this beautiful video.
