married couples," but would those couples be more likely to stay together if they got married? Probably not.

You might be right. But I think the wider picture is more important. The important thing is that if people value commitment more highly we would live in a better society. We need to work towards a cultural shift where children will grow up to take relationships seriously.

So, should we all sign the online petition calling on the Prime Minister to "Conduct a 12 week public consultation regarding whether or not to make sex and relationship education a statutory requirement for children five years old and over, expressing regret that this did not take place before the decision was announced by Jim Knight on October 23rd"?

Some might, but the best solution would be figuring out which couples are most likely to break up ahead of time (for cohabitations and marriages). And when you discount the 50+% of cohabiting couples who separate within five years of the birth of a child, the statistics for marriage and the remaining cohabitees start to look more similar (though marriages still seem more stable).
