If i had a time machine, i'd go to 1940/41 first and say, haha, yeah, we won. Also, apart from the war etc, Britain was a much nicer place than it is today:(
"In all my life nothing ever quite matched the perfect joy of that moment. My school lay in ruins, the river beckoned with the promise of stolen days."
Love the location settings used for this movie. The English scenes look so romantic! Especially the grandparents' home by the river. Wonder where they filmed it.
My late father was 8 in 1940 and remaind in London during the bombing as his mother refused to split the family up and have him and his sisters evacuated to the relative safety of the countryside. The boy in this film reminds me of my dad and what it must have been like for him. His father was away at war in the Royal Navy, so he did not see him for a very long time. RIP Dad; June 4th 2010.
lost count of how many times ive seen this makes me homesick after being brought up in ireland....anyone know where i can the scene where she plays the piano after their house was hit ive just learned to play that..
couldn't agree with you more. always thought i should have been brought up in the 40's. time was harder but people seemed to work as a team and were proud of their roots. seems a far better world in many ways than how we live today.
Yes, you are so right. A beloved time - our kinfolk do well in times of war and rough times, not so well in times of wealth and plenty, corruptions, everyone doing what they want.
This brings back memories, I'll have to watch it again!
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, I've always got confused with this film and Empire of the Sun, probably cos I used to watch them around the same time before I made it into double figures. . .
Wow!! Thank you sooo sooo sooo sooo much for putting this up here, its one of my ABSOLUTE favorites from back in the days!!! You wont believe how happy this has made me feel!
This is a FANTASTIC film

I lived at the same age in Czechoslovakia, liberated by gen. Patton (the lucky
fraction) and seeing this movie, everything I lived through came back to me.
Great Wonderful UK - what happened to you today? Need another Churchill?
The music on the piano is Mozart "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik"

Hi
Just watched Hope and Glory on Sky Movies and its still a great World War Two Adventure film.
I remember watching this as a kid back in the 80s but not seen it for like 15 years or more.
Am going to keep this one on DVD.
It gets at least a 7 or 8 I think.

What I'd give to have been brought up in that generation.
I'm 19 now; and the majority of people my age, don't have respect for anyone or anything.
Fantastic film! How Britain should be. Fearless.

This movie reminds me of all those bold and brassy dames and heroic men of that generation.
My Mum and Dad both being from the generation to save the world.
Thank You for giving up so much for saving the world and keeping us free and safe from harm.
Wherever you are may the gin be cold and the music jumping with Glenn Miller.

I loved this movie.
And I love this vision of England the way it once was, always was, always should be, but is now no more.

You realize that people in 60 years will say the exact same thing about today? It's called nostalgia.
jonasulrich 1 month ago
@jonasulrich Exactly. In my day we searched the internet using 'Alta Vista' and actually walked to the phone instead of the phone walking to us.

I was turning 5 when my family emigrated from England to Canada. Once in Canada I became embarrassed of my accent & English mannerisms.
In the end it took learning about my heritage (Battle of Britain) to make me feel proud of where I came from.
Hope & Glory for me rates as the best movie ever. It is a window into another time when life was simpler & people stuck together.
John Boorman, the director, struck gold with this one.
Move aside Casablanca & Gone with the Wind...

Did I see you with a soldier Dawn.
Just doing my part for the war effort mum.
This movie reminded me of so many people I grew up with in London so long ago and how odd they were and yet were also so giving to me.
They simply were the best ever and I do miss my Auntie Maddie.
She was the best ever.
