I think there are three defining characteristics of the '95 Nebraska team:
(1) Margin of victory. The closest game they had all year was 14 points. Most other teams - including '71 Nebraska - had at least one close call.
(2) Tough schedule. Four top-ten teams. Two of them on the road, one on a neutral site. Nebraska obliterated them all, by an average of 31 points per game.
(3) The runner-up. '95 Gators were an awesome team that ran into a buzzsaw. Strongest runner-up in recent memory.
The only argument I ever see for the '01 hurricanes is their roster of future NFL players. They had a few all pros but some at the same positions where they would not have contributed in the '01 season. However 27 players from that 95 Husker team played in the NFL. Considering that the triple option isn't terribly adaptive to the NFL game, that is an amazing amount of players.
BTW that so called superduper '01 Miami team beat only one top ten team all year. The Huskers DESTROYED 4.
People forget that the '95 FLORIDA team was better than the '01Miami team! Florida had to play a tougher schedule and beat every team by at least 11. They didn't need a last-minute interception or a desperate stop on a two-point conversion to roll through the season undefeated.
Unfortunately they had to go up against the '95 Nebraska team in the Fiesta Bowl...
@DanielSong39 They also beat three top ten teams that year. They were so highly regarded that ESPN, Sports Illustrated and many others favored them against the Huskers even though Nebraska steamrolled everyone and were the undefeated and defending national champions. The Gators were so highly regarded that even though they lost by 38, they retained their #2 ranking, Evidently nobody thought any team could do better than their 38 point loss to Nebraska.
This team was the best team ever to play the game hands down. They didn't beat people they dismantled them. A fast, huge and experianced O and a swarming D. No other team, Not 01 Miami, 05 Texas nor 04 USC could beat these guys.

As an outsider from the state of Ohio(who beat most of the talent from that 01 Canes team) 95 Huskers are by far the best team that's taken to the college gridiron, you could NOT STOP that rushing attack, most talented college backfield ever, they could just line up and run iso plays alllllll day. And the defense to match
Major kudos to you. That backfield behind that offensive line, just plain dominant. They honestly didn't have a need to run option football. They could have run iso's, straight pitches to RB's, stretch plays, counters, traps, counter-traps, draws, dives, whatever they want. Oh, and don't forget the designed run plays for Frazier. Qb traps and draws. Then they hit ya' with deep play action and defense has to honor the run fake, ugh oh.

Also in 2001, Miami squeaked by Virginia Tech 26-24. Along with that Boston College game. They played 1 top 10 team and that team (Nebraska) gave up 62 points and lost the game before. What fool would compare the 2001 Canes to the 95 Huskers. WOW. Watch ESPN. Nebraska has the top 2 teams of all-time. Damn kids.

redline, at first I was a little irritated by your retarded comments. Then all I could do is laugh. You know NOTHING about Nebraska history. NOTHING. LOL, keep wasting your life on the Connecticut propaganda machine, it's a lot more fun than watching your program rot I guess. Stuffing the ballot box is more rewarding to NU these days than taking the field.
Let me ask you this. How did an 01 BC D with not ONE player from that D that went on to have any sort of impactful NFL career hold the 01 cane O to ONE offensive TD? A little reminder. 95 Nebraska defense put 17-19 guys from the two deep in the NFL and about 10 of those had long term careers as starters. Disproves this theory that 01 Miami would beat 95 NU because of NFL success of drafted players . Don't say it was too windy! ROFLMAO MEMO: football is an all weather sport.
Hey Red , Nebraska blew out 4 of the top 10 teams that year. And by "blowing out", do you mean like beating Boston College on an interception inside the 5 yard line with less than a minute to play. Damn, are you brain dead? Pull the plug on this idiot. As the people who play the game(like Ray Lewis) would say, "Nebraska was the greatest team to ever play college football. Maybe a diehard fan like you would believe Ray Lewis.
Hey RED , Tommie's blood clot also got off the bench in the 2nd half to win the National Championship in your backyard. Be glad southern teams don't have to go north to play in bowls. And where's Dorksey Now??? Ask your dad who would win. He's probably alot smarter when it comes to sports.
I remember how Gator fans said they were going to destroy Nebraska. The arrogance was and still is amazing. THE BEST THING THEY COULD SAY AFTER THE GAME WAS THAT NEBRASKA WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BEAT THEM IN THE SWAMP.
Wrong bozo. And your option football team would have found out what it's like to face a real offense that can romp that ass on the ground or the air. Oh, that's right, this team couldn't complete a pass if you gave them the P and the A. Try again cornfucker.
I'm not a Nebraska fan, but objectively I have to admit that they were a team that would have used a team like the 2001 Hurricanes as a sacrificial lamb.
Eric Crouch just called me, now that his summer football league folded he realized just how sore he still was from his ass kicking seven years later. Tommie Frazier's blood clot just got off the phone with me, it said that even as a 14 year old kid, John Vilma would have hit him hard enough to kill him and he don't want none of that. Keep worshiping that Osborne picture on your wall and keep dreaming buddy.
This 1995 Nebraska team blew out every single team they played, including a #2 Florida team and held them to -28 yards rushing. The same arguments you're using were used for Florida, and they looked more like Florida International than the University of Florida.
But there's really no way to know. I'm pretty confident that 1994 Penn State could have beaten any team that year, including 1994 Nebraska, but that was never tested out, and there's no way to test this out except on a video game.
OMG! NO? 2001 Miami and it's 17 future 1st round picks in the NFL draft would have wiped the floor with these roided-out, girl-beating, knuckle-dragging, forward-pass-eschewing corn-holers. PERIOD. And don't ever, EVER, compare 2001 Miami to ANY year Spurrier UF team. If you need a reason, you don't watch enough college football to understand and probably never will. But hey, that Tommy Fraizer, sure ran through a bunch of arm tackles that night, so that means he's UNBEATABLE! LMFAO.
2001 Miami was no slouch team, I'll give you that. But they would have lost to the 1995 Cornhuskers. It's not just that the game performances point to them being outmuscled, but Miami has a history of trouble with physical teams, look at them in 1987 against Penn State, 1993 against Alabama, and 2002 against Ohio State. And these are teams that Miami was supposed to steamroll over. Remember, that 1986 team was loaded with future NFL stars, but had their only loss handed to them by Penn State.
Watch the 1984 Orange Bowl, watch the '01 Rose Bowl. Put the option up against the deepest roster of a college football team in history, the epitome of pro-style offense vs. high school option football with a giant "training regimen of supplements" and you get routed. 2001 UM outscored everybody by the most dominating of margins ever in any sport when you look at the scoreboards. Bringing up Fiesta Bowls shows how little ground you have to stand on when actually matching up these two teams.
The 2001 Miami team, as I said, was a good team, but I'm more impressed by the 1995 Cornhuskers. They did a good job at passing the ball, but Frazier could also run. A dual threat quarterback is always dangerous (unless, of course, the rest of the team flat out sucks). If you were to say that the 94 Cornhuskers were not the best team, I'd completely agree, I'm confident that the 94 Nittany Lions could have beaten them. But the 95 Cornhuskers are likely the best in the modern era.
Damn kids.
Miami owns Nebraska. You and every sea or red wearing Osborn worshipers know it and will never be able to deny it. 2001 Hurricanes would hung Tommy Frazier up to dry by the end of the first half.
Bow down and kiss the rings, not Osborn's behind. Have some more steroids in the weight training regime again, that will get things right back in Lincoln.
Also, Nebraska has far more history and tradition over the course of a century than Miami does. Miami was good for 20 years. And what's this crap about steroids? That's a new one on me. You must be a hater. Nothing more, nothing less.
redlineoverload is totally right... college success is determined completely by the nfl draft and how well you do in the pros, nothing else. Terrel Owens was the best college receiver ever besides Jerry Rice who was tearin shit up at Mississippi Valley State. Results on the field are worthless, so what if they almost lost to a mediocre BC team, they had so many 1st rounders!!!
Doubtful that 94 PSU beats 94 Nebraska. 94 Nebraska Blackshirts proved what they would do to an offense filled with future NFL players. K. Stewart, R. Salaam, C. Fauria, M. Westbrook, R. Carruth, H. iRwin and a few other NFL lineman. CU scored a grand total of 7 that day. Let us not forget how dominant the 94 NU rush game was with Phillips, 1700 + yds or how soft the PSU defense was against the run. Chewing up clock, scoring and PSU O standing on sidelines. The right team was crowned 94 NC.
Most of Penn State's defensive weakness was because the second stringers went in really early. Remember that Indiana scored a grand total of 14 on Penn State before the backups went in, Ohio State 0 points before the backups went in, and Illinois only scored 10 after gaining a 21-0 lead due to a defense led by Simeon Rice that forced PSU mistakes. Oregon was another great defensive team ("Gang Green") and masterful at chewing up clock on offense, dominated the first half, but was behind 14-7.
You're an idiot. Re-read the first two sentences of what you wrote. In one sentence you imply that points Illinois scored very early on PSU against non starters of PSU d, very next sentence implies that EXACT opposite is true, that points scored were on starters, "scored grand total of 14 on PSU ( keyword coming next) BEFORE the backups went in. WTF?? Either the starters were in early,to anyone with a brain knows makes more sense, any coach worth SPIT is going to START a game with 1st team D!
Re-read what I wrote about Illinois. I said mistakes led to Illinois gaining an early lead, and not all three touchdowns were offensive. Illinois scored 7 offensively in the first quarter against the first string D with a very short field (much like Shonn Green's touchdowns against PSU's 2008 defense), and two touchdowns were defensive. After Penn State stopped making mistakes, that same defense stuffed Illinois like a Thanksgiving turkey. You misread Indiana for Illinois.
Either the STARTERS on D for PSU were in early when they gave up 21 straight to Illinois or they weren't! Oh, and you're crying about Simeon Rice making playys or making it difficult on PSU offense. OH NO! It's football! Probably why Illinois and Rice couldn't do it all game, because they were a one man show and the 94 Huskers had an entire defense filled with players that disrupt offenses. Go ask 94 CU, KSU, Miami. 94 CU probably beats 94 PSU with a better d and an explosive offense.
Don't laugh off Simeon Rice, he was a really good defensive player. I was merely pointing out that Penn State made mistakes and overcame them against a great defense in what was their worst game all year. 1994 Colorado was a good team, but not on PSU's level. Remember, take away the Miracle in Michigan and they're a two loss team. Penn State dominated Michigan most of their game with them, though. Yes, NU had a good defense, but so did Oregon, nicknamed "Gang Green" for the pain they inflicted.
Don't for one minute make a correlation between Oregon and there "Gang Green" defense, if they want to call it that, and the 94 Blackshirts! Don't make me PUKE! PPPPUUULLLLEEEAAAAASSSSSEEE!!?? Trying to talk about Oregon, a soft Pac 10 team in same sentence as 94 Blackshirts! Get REAL YOU STUPID FUCK! ROFLMFAO AT YOU MVILLANI85 I can't debate with someone that refuses to see the forrest through the trees. Comparing 94 NU d to a soft Pac 10 D. WTF did you say? DISRESPECT
I never said that Oregon was every bit as good as Nebraska, but they had one thing in common, a good defense. Comparing 94 PSU to 94 CU is like comparing 94 NU to 94 Oregon. But Oregon was no joke. After losing to Hawaii and a decent Utah, they got their act together and didn't allow more than 21 points the rest of the regular season, including a 31-20 win over a Washington team known for "The Whammy In Miami". But I do think 94 PSU vs 94 NU would be much, much closer than the Rose Bowl was.
You just said in same sentence, one thing in common a good defense. PUUULLLEEEAAASSSEEE! Do not insult me or the Blackshirts further! Got there asses kicked by Hawaii! by Hawaii!! Because this supposedly great defense gave up 36 points to HAWAII!!!
What I said was "Both teams had a good defense", and I also said that after Oregon got their act together, they became a good team. That was simply a response to comparing 1994 Colorado to 1994 Penn State because both teams have a good offense.
And Colorado had a defense, something PSU did not. We can go round and round about PSU's defense or when the starters did or didn't play during games. But, most any objective observer, or non resident of Penn will agree that PSU 1994 defense was not very good and not good enough to win a NC. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, OFFENSE IS FOR SHOW.
Penn State's defense was a good defense, but not a good defense by Linebacker U standards. But defense wins important games (like when they shut down Illinois after digging themselves into a hole). Also, most of the teams Penn State faced were pretty good, the only pitiful team, a 3-9 Minnesota, was dispatched 56-3. I'd say 1994 Colorado is more like 1996 Penn State, 96 Penn State only lost one game big, 38-7 to Ohio State on the road, but dominated most other opponents.
94 PSU runs into 2 problems if they face 94 NU. Problem 1) PSU O would be facing a great defense, unlike any they had seen in 94. 94 NU D had already seen an offense in 94 filled with all sorts of future NFL players, CU = 7 points. Problem 2) and just as glaring, the 94 NU offense would be playing defense against the 94 PSU offense by keeping them on the sidelines by sustaining long time consuming drives up and down the field. Can't score w/out ball and PSU D wouldn't stop NU offense enough.
I think what we would have seen would have been a situation where Nebraska gave up more than they're used to but Penn State scored much less than average (but I guarantee more than 7 points). I'm not sure if the Nebraska offense would have been able to consistently chew up clock. Defensive teams often would do that against Penn State, at times holding the ball for what seemed like another hour, but Penn State was just so explosive that they could score in the blink of an eye.
i am from wv but i always say i am the biggest huskers fan east of the mississippi and this team they could of played in the nfl and maybe made the playoffs they are the best dont get me wrong i like the mountainers but i bleed red and white go big red for ever they will be back
Quite Simple and True. The Greatest team of all time. Mindlessly blab up your Trojans, your Canes and your Longhorns. Nebraska 1995 proved it on the field. 38 point average victory margin. Go Big Red!
Hate the Gaytors so much. Hope they go 0-12 every year.

MVillani1985 4 years ago
OMG! LMFAO.
redlineoverload 4 years ago

But the 95 Cornhuskers are likely the best in the modern era.

agreed 95 huskers those players were scary all of them
80tk2009 3 years ago
Also in 2001, Miami squeaked by Virginia Tech 26-24. Along with that Boston College game. They played 1 top 10 team and that team (Nebraska) gave up 62 points and lost the game before. What fool would compare the 2001 Canes to the 95 Huskers. WOW. Watch ESPN. Nebraska has the top 2 teams of all-time. Damn kids.
husker69 3 years ago
Miami owns Nebraska. You and every sea or red wearing Osborn worshipers know it and will never be able to deny it. 2001 Hurricanes would hung Tommy Frazier up to dry by the end of the first half.

I was under the impression we had a 5-5 record against the Candy Canes? Am I wrong? Redline, you are out of your element!

Bow down and kiss the rings, not Osborn's behind. Have some more steroids in the weight training regime again, that will get things right back in Lincoln.
redlineoverload 3 years ago

Jaddy2020 3 years ago
You dont know much about sports do u. College football is based on the NFL draft. What a moron.

95skersbestever 2 years ago
Most of Penn State's defensive weakness was because the second stringers went in really early. Remember that Indiana scored a grand total of 14 on Penn State before the backups went in, Ohio State 0 points before the backups went in, and Illinois only scored 10 after gaining a 21-0 lead due to a defense led by Simeon Rice that forced PSU mistakes. Oregon was another great defensive team ("Gang Green") and masterful at chewing up clock on offense, dominated the first half, but was behind 14-7.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
You're an idiot. Re-read the first two sentences of what you wrote. In one sentence you imply that points Illinois scored very early on PSU against non starters of PSU d, very next sentence implies that EXACT opposite is true, that points scored were on starters, "scored grand total of 14 on PSU ( keyword coming next) BEFORE the backups went in. WTF?? Either the starters were in early,to anyone with a brain knows makes more sense, any coach worth SPIT is going to START a game with 1st team D!
95skersbestever 2 years ago
Re-read what I wrote about Illinois. I said mistakes led to Illinois gaining an early lead, and not all three touchdowns were offensive. Illinois scored 7 offensively in the first quarter against the first string D with a very short field (much like Shonn Green's touchdowns against PSU's 2008 defense), and two touchdowns were defensive. After Penn State stopped making mistakes, that same defense stuffed Illinois like a Thanksgiving turkey. You misread Indiana for Illinois.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
Either the STARTERS on D for PSU were in early when they gave up 21 straight to Illinois or they weren't! Oh, and you're crying about Simeon Rice making playys or making it difficult on PSU offense. OH NO! It's football! Probably why Illinois and Rice couldn't do it all game, because they were a one man show and the 94 Huskers had an entire defense filled with players that disrupt offenses. Go ask 94 CU, KSU, Miami. 94 CU probably beats 94 PSU with a better d and an explosive offense.
95skersbestever 2 years ago
Don't laugh off Simeon Rice, he was a really good defensive player. I was merely pointing out that Penn State made mistakes and overcame them against a great defense in what was their worst game all year. 1994 Colorado was a good team, but not on PSU's level. Remember, take away the Miracle in Michigan and they're a two loss team. Penn State dominated Michigan most of their game with them, though. Yes, NU had a good defense, but so did Oregon, nicknamed "Gang Green" for the pain they inflicted.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
DISRESPECT
95skersbestever 2 years ago
I never said that Oregon was every bit as good as Nebraska, but they had one thing in common, a good defense. Comparing 94 PSU to 94 CU is like comparing 94 NU to 94 Oregon. But Oregon was no joke. After losing to Hawaii and a decent Utah, they got their act together and didn't allow more than 21 points the rest of the regular season, including a 31-20 win over a Washington team known for "The Whammy In Miami". But I do think 94 PSU vs 94 NU would be much, much closer than the Rose Bowl was.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
You just said in same sentence, one thing in common a good defense. PUUULLLEEEAAASSSEEE! Do not insult me or the Blackshirts further! Got there asses kicked by Hawaii! by Hawaii!! Because this supposedly great defense gave up 36 points to HAWAII!!!
95skersbestever 2 years ago
What I said was "Both teams had a good defense", and I also said that after Oregon got their act together, they became a good team. That was simply a response to comparing 1994 Colorado to 1994 Penn State because both teams have a good offense.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
And Colorado had a defense, something PSU did not. We can go round and round about PSU's defense or when the starters did or didn't play during games. But, most any objective observer, or non resident of Penn will agree that PSU 1994 defense was not very good and not good enough to win a NC. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, OFFENSE IS FOR SHOW.
95skersbestever 2 years ago
Penn State's defense was a good defense, but not a good defense by Linebacker U standards. But defense wins important games (like when they shut down Illinois after digging themselves into a hole). Also, most of the teams Penn State faced were pretty good, the only pitiful team, a 3-9 Minnesota, was dispatched 56-3. I'd say 1994 Colorado is more like 1996 Penn State, 96 Penn State only lost one game big, 38-7 to Ohio State on the road, but dominated most other opponents.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
94 PSU runs into 2 problems if they face 94 NU. Problem 1) PSU O would be facing a great defense, unlike any they had seen in 94. 94 NU D had already seen an offense in 94 filled with all sorts of future NFL players, CU = 7 points. Problem 2) and just as glaring, the 94 NU offense would be playing defense against the 94 PSU offense by keeping them on the sidelines by sustaining long time consuming drives up and down the field. Can't score w/out ball and PSU D wouldn't stop NU offense enough.
95skersbestever 2 years ago
I think what we would have seen would have been a situation where Nebraska gave up more than they're used to but Penn State scored much less than average (but I guarantee more than 7 points). I'm not sure if the Nebraska offense would have been able to consistently chew up clock. Defensive teams often would do that against Penn State, at times holding the ball for what seemed like another hour, but Penn State was just so explosive that they could score in the blink of an eye.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
This team was fucking illegal
they were so dominant against everytime and i think they will never be a team in college football like that again

Quite Simple and True. The Greatest team of all time. Mindlessly blab up your Trojans, your Canes and your Longhorns. Nebraska 1995 proved it on the field. 38 point average victory margin. Go Big Red!

Totally agree. That team was untouchable. They could surly use Coach Osborne now :(
