The back one only slides left and right. It does not slide forward with the bottom. So you have to slide it over to unlock the bottom and allow it to slide forward.
i dont understand why you have to slide the first hidden box joint in the back. it seems only necessary to slide the one the directly lets it open? correct me because i cant see.
@quintonbob I don't know where you'd buy one either, haha. I'm sure something like it exists out there somewhere but I couldn't find it so I built it. There aren't a whole lot of non-traditional puzzle boxes out there that I know of. Lots of one-offs (read expensive), but not many I know of that are mass produced. The only way to become good at wood working is to keep trying! This box took about $8-10 in wood and a couple dollars in finishing supplies. The tools were more of course.
very nice. a very thoughtful gift. good thing you left these instructions just in case your girlfriend decides to poison you and tries to hide the evidence.
Sorry, I didn't make plans for it. I just made it up as I went along. I started by deciding I wanted the bottom to slide forward for it to open. Then I figured out ways to keep the bottom from sliding by adding extra "steps" to opening it.
It was a 100% tung oil that I thinned a lot for the first coat, then gradually reduced the thinner proportion on subsequent coats until I used pure tung for the final coat. The box has been in use for almost 2 years now and still looks like I finished it yesterday. Tung Oil is amazing stuff.
Oops, I meant to hit "reply" and accidentally hit "remove" a comment. The user asked if it was a Japanese style puzzle box. It's actually not. The Japanese boxes I'm familiar with have a skin that slides around on other core box panels. In this box it is just the core box sliding around. So when you slide the bottom forward the actual bottom of the entire box is sliding. I made a small container inside to keep things in place when you open it, but the container is just held in by friction.
Thanks! Sorry, no plans. I kinda made it up as I went along. I made plans for the things I've made since then but I haven't made anymore puzzle boxes yet.
It took about a month working a few hours here and there. The toughest part was figuring out how to get pieces to slide. In the end I decided to use slotted keys. Making the finger joint jig was easy. The finishing process took nearly 2 of the weeks.
That's cool man. Where did you learn to make this? I would like to get into that. I can't stop trying to figure out puzzles, and making them is just as fun. I'd love some more information on this stuff if you could. Good job man, peace.
Haha, that was half the fun in making it. She's smart so she did eventually figure it out. I was disappointed that it took less than 20 minutes. I guess that means the next one will have to be that much more elaborate. Thanks for watching!

@stitchx2796 mabey it locks the front one?
Oblivion4pcand360 2 years ago
@stitchx2796 it locks the bottom from moving

That's right! The back locks the bottom from sliding and the front locks to top down. Can't open the top without sliding both. :-)

Give it to your girlfriend but put a ring in it. Tell her how to open it and then that will give her the best surprise of her life!

Was it 100% tung oil that you used, or merely a tung oil finish?
