The British housing situation is a joke. Everyone except property speculators and oldies who bought there house years ago are suffering. We need a law that deny's the right to own more than one house and not rent it out for someone for someone to live in. We also need a lot more housing built. I really hope that people becoming motivated to force governments to change things, governments don't do much when left to their own devices.

Yes. And... /you/ have the money to support that? Or the right to make others do it for you? Often renting a home is cheaper than owning, especially in the long run. But perhaps people just starting out should satisfy themselves with a huge mortgage or an apartment instead.

If the cost of a house was simply the building cost then people wouldn't need to pay huge rents or huge mortgages. The cost of housing is mostly the cost of land ie land with planning permission. look at countries like Germany very low rents and very small mortgages, plus a huge amount of space to live in. 'We' (most people) in the UK live like battery chickens because we won't interfere with speculaters right to make huge amounts of money trading land, its been like this for about 800 years.
