Blown timing belt- pistons are hitting valves. Real common on these cars. I have one and mines been okay but it's definitly not a Civic or Corolla!! too bad, I like the car but they had some serious quality control problems. I think I have the only Lanos left-lol.

I'm thinking that the starting problem you are having is with the cracked terminal. Mine is very touchy about getting full power and demands a good terminal. I have one of these, 4 door model 103000 miles bought new in 2001 by my mom and passes on to me all before pineapple express. Only minor wear problems, great ride and handling and a suprising amout of umf under the hood for a 4 cylinder. I love this car and it was a smart purchase and loads of fun, much better than any kia.

@hitachi088 In the USA they were not a success, but there's more to the world...They sold very well in many european countries (esp Poland/Spain) and also did quite well in Australia where GM honoured their warranties fully when Daewoo automotive division got swallowed by them.. They are still very common on Oz roads, which suggests that they are quite reliable. Mine certainly has been for 9 years and 235000km, without a single mech or electrical problem. How's your car's record?

If you wanna start it, you need two more things to do: charge your giant battery cuz it's obviously discharged, and detach the car's dead battery, cuz it's grabbing the energy for charging when connected to the charged one.

i've got the same car - it's a '98 model - pretty much everything is manual, so there's less to go wrong. it has an annoying immobiliser which makes starting on low power difficult, but apart from that, it's the most reliable car i've ever owned.

this one seems pretty good though, i didn't know they were made with leather and airbags and the such...

No-one worked out why it didn't start?? It has an immobiliser - won't start without the little 'dongle' next to the key. It's a small black rod, about 1.3" long and .25" diameter that you just hang on your keyring. It doesn't require power, so if you can find it and just put it near the ig switch, it will start. I had one of these - unkillable! not sophisticated but very reliable, went everywhere. Friend now has it - 350Kkm still gong strong, orig motor...

Didn't know about the 1.6 - thanx for the info, as i will soon be getting mine back and might one day consider an exchange donk - I'll stick to the 1.5... Mine never let me down and was a *very* comfortable tourer - fairly gutless but it had a 'sweet spot' at 130kph (gps-genuine!) and would cruise all day at that - I used to drive it regularly between Adelaide and Brisbane - lots of loong stretches of open road... Still love that car..

@chrlz904 No worries, ur from australia thats good, lots of other countries have a variety of motors. Yeah the 1.5 is great! Like comapred to other cars like its main competiton at the time the hyundai excel 1.5. You see so many of them blowing blue smoke and all banged up. I guarantee you your lanos will never get smokey or use oil if it's cared for. Yeah it aint the fastest thing but they have a smooth engine and u can always guarantee is to start every time:)

Cheap? yes, and if you hammer it, it probably wouldn't last...but some folks look after their cars. The immobiliser depends on the year/model. *The key he showed looks EXACTLY like mine, and it comes with a 'dongle'.* Without that, it does EXACTLY what was shown here. ..using foul language doesn't make you smart...
