i saw the vulcan years ago at mildenhall air show and what a show, went along the runway at low level then went vertical and put the power on and boy did the ground shake
It's such a shame she's only allowed to use 20% of military power now she's back in the air. I was at Waddington 2008 on her first new public display and it brought a lump to my throat. Still a wonderful aircraft.
It's one of the V Bombers. Delta Wing, the inspiration for Concorde. It had its moments and now there is one left which flies. Fly safely Vulcan. I admire it and its voice.
The best sounding aircraft along with the Concorde,B1 Lancer, and F-14 Tomcat I ever heard at any air shows. First saw it in 1972. Then in 1973,1976,1977,and I last saw it along with the Concorde in 1983 at the CNE Labour Day weekend air show in Toronto Canada. The take offs and fly by's right over the crowd low completely shakes your guts and your ears are ringing for the rest of the air show, lol. Like the loudest heavy metal rock concert you can think of.
Good to see some 'vintage' show footage - standing the thing on its wing tip rather than disappearing off into the far distance in a long gentle turn. Thanks to the uploader.
Thanks for posting, This was the last time I saw her fly and sadly near the end of RAF Biggin Hill as an active RAF unit. That was a honour to have served at. great kite great display .
I watched the Vulcan at Waddington 2010. disappointing. The pilot flew it like he was afraid of it. No Vulcan roar. very poor.If its a museum piece, keep it there on the ground. If it a show stopper like it should be, try opening the taps a bit!!! Take a hint or fans will lose interest very quickly like myself. Lets see XH558 flown at the bigger airshows like it used to be or keep it parked up to save any dissapointment or embarrasment. Comments welcome!
@adrianswhitehead You are not alone in your comments however the operators are governed by the OEM of the engines to what can be tolerated. The airframe will outlive the engines based on OEM support.
@vulcan903 i noticed the same problem with regulations over here at airshows after the 1980s. you used to hear jet aircraft close up and at full throttle going to air shows from the 1960s to 1980s.
@adrianswhitehead Hey there. I agree. I live in York and It is such a shame that the Victor K2 XL231 at Elvington is not allowed to spread its wings! It's the victor that is in the videos on the right.
@adrianswhitehead I dont see why you would find it dissapointing can't you just be happy we have a vulcan back in the air? XH558 isnt as young as she was back then and she has limited life left on her if she was thrown around the way she was she would be retired much sooner than planned. The engines are limited to 1200 cycles which means she is only aloud to have full power on a limited ammount of times. And she is flown the way she is to preserve her. She is a show stopper no matter what. :)
the waffle was distracting ... but a great video. when the Vulcan stopped flying at Biggin the airshow went dull i felt. maybee a return one day we hope.
Thanks,These are probably THE most awesome aeronautical creations to see (and hear),I was a Child when i saw it never forgotten, plenty of power and lift on thee babys.
Hopefully XH558 will return to the air display circuit soon, sadly it costs absolutely tons to keep in the air, the government should provide funding for such a brilliant aircraft, XH558 flies again, but tehy're really struggling to find the money, especially with the current recession meaning nobody wants to spend money on stuff like that.
I wonder what it was like not being a Brit and seeing just how advanced we were. We have scrapped more cutting edge stuff than any other nation can shake a stick at.
Britain = Go to a musem and have a look at the future.
Keep Britain British, lets send the self richeous crap home and get back on top.
Search for English Electric Lightning -supersonic Interceptor (by user ispiffey).
Watch at the end as a whole squadron goes vertical = Scrapped technology from 1959.
No it was a solid v shape and much larger than a mirage i'm sure. I've checked and found out it wasn't a Vulcan as Tomk312 had rightly said........i wonder what the hell it was?!!!
Good to know if we ever needed to match the Russian bombers we could call up the blue prints of the vulcan add modern technology to it and begin production again. But i think the future is going to be unmanned aircraft.
the sound might me a bit naff but you can still hear that trademark HOWL as she launches down the runway, that noise has captivated both old and young alike and still gives me chills when i heer it!!
norwich city avation museum has a complete vulcan and they do tours up in the cockpit i highly recomend it for all those vulcan lovers out there not sure but i think it was XM612
I remember watching this graceful old lady of the sky at displays in Finningley near Doncaster as a child. The way she made the earth shake and the tremendous roar always gave me goosebumps. I cant wait for her return in 2008
Wonderful to thik this view will be gracing our skys once more! Can only agree whatever happened to the british aircraft industry, the TSR 2 is a beautiful aircraft and so ahead of its time. What do we have no? Eurofighter!
Nothing wrong with Eurofighter. It gets its job done. And to be fair some of the modern "junk" can carry the same payload as the TSR 2 or very close to it. I'm glad the Vulcan is flying again too but people who moan about what happened to the V Force have to remember that Submarine launched weapons are most cost effective and deadly and most modern planes can carry high yeild nuclear weapons.
I hardly call some of the US stuff "junk", I mean the F-35 is built partially by the UK and will be the sort of thing we can use off proper carriers, not the stunted assualt carriers we have now.
I remember this beautiful lady with great fondness. Especially how she sould shake the world at full throttle. Anyone who has never seen this fly, you re in for one hell of a treat next year.
they were part of the British "V-Bomber" force during the 'cold war' designed to drop a nuke on the ruskies. Their greatest moment in some minds was operation black busk in the falklands war between the UK and Argentina in the early 80's.... read a book called vulcan 607 for the inside in that mission... and some funny anecdotes about various exercises in the states...

The Concorde and Vulcan are definately the loudest of the British Rolls Royce Aircraft. The Nimrod was about 3rd.
