I have to say, this is embarrassing. I'm a total U2 homer and Christian/Christ-Follower - a Presbyterian to boot. Embarrassing to U2 and certainly embarrassing to a worship service. Did the congregation applause?

Don't get me wrong, U2 will be the worship band of heaven, but of course, it will be U2. =)

The word was not originally an adjective. . . it was a descriptive of a Christ follower. . . which, by the way, Bono claims to be. Bono also claims that this song is a worship song. . . so if a song that is written by a Christ-follower for the purpose of worshipping his God isn't considered "Christian". . . I don't know what would be. . . and maybe that label "Christian" should be reevaluated!!

I think it's awesome how church is just like a concert. There's nothing I love more than going somewhere where the worship band imitates all my favorite secular bands. I'm sure God doesn't mind - it doesn't matter what he thinks anyways...

Look, all Im saying is that there is a price to pay for being ultra hip /ecumenical /relevant /emergent. One of the things you give up is spiritual discernment.

As I said before, this song sounds great. In fact I really like the way its done here. But using it in worship is like getting your drinking water from a toilet bowl. Or perhaps getting your sermon notes from a Wicca meeting.

The source DOES matter and U2 is anything but Christian.

I guess I would have to ask your definition of "Christian". I've seen plenty that leads me to believe they hate Christianity. And I haven't seen anything even remotely Pro-Christian in anything they've done (in the past 10 years or so).

And don't say "They pray before their concerts", or "They give money to Africa". Demons also do those things. That's not proof of Christianity. And it's a stretch to find any 'hidden Christian meaning' in any of their songs. I've tried.

"Walk ON". Yeah, it's a good song. But Christian? Come on... No way. Worship? Maybe, but no way is it CHRISTIAN worship.

Look, I LIKE U2. They are one of the greatest bands in Rock history. No Question! But why do we have to "spiritualize" everything? They aren't Christian. They don't claim to be a Christian band. Singing "hallelujah" in the middle of your song doesn't automatically make it a Christian song.

They are good. But why can't we relax and say they are just "Great Rock-N-Roll"?

@theboofus423 Actually, Bono is an unashamed and unapologetic narcissist - which is directly and completely incompatible with being a Christ-follower. But regardless, using this song in a church service serves no purpose except to dilute the integrity and potency of corporate worship. It is simply a performance, used as a marketing tool to entice people to go to a cool church. How could anyone say it is anything different?

I do agree though, the label CHRISTIAN should be reevaluated.

Dessie10046-When in planning for the Easter Service we were truly struck by this song specifically because of the spiritual nature of the lyrics and the things Bono was quoted saying about it. In the feature in Rolling Stone for the new album, Bono said that "Magnificent" was entirely inspired by his reading of Mary's Prayer in Luke 1. He later said in a radio interview that its a song about two lovers turning their lives into worship for God. He realizes he was born to sing for his Maker.

What you see in this video cost no money (other than normal fixed expenses). All the musicians, vocalists, tech people, etc. that made this happen are all volunteers at Oakbrook. From the guitarists to the sound guys to the camera operators - they're all volunteers. They serve because they love God and want to share their gifts with others. (continued...)

Your assumption that Oakbrook uses money that should be given to the poor and uses it for a "show" is simply not accurate. Oakbrook has several programs to help the hungry and poor, some of which are in progress this very week!

It's sad to me that one could judge a church's mission based on one video. This 'church' as you refer to it filled a semi-trailer full of food 2 days ago to feed the hungry in our community...45 tons of food to be exact. This 'church' is reaching hundreds of children in our school system that no one else is reaching...this church is about one mission...to know Jesus and to live like Him. As this U2 song proclaims, "We were born to sing for you....to live for you."

i think its cool that the song is used in a spiritual context. bono's lyrics have always borrowed heavily from the scriptures but its only when its put in front of your face that it truly uplifts sometimes. i'm not even a christian (brought up as a muslim), i much prefer to uphold the virtues of secularism rather than religion but things like this are good for the spirit. we are all governed by the same god/energy regardless of how we manifest our beliefs and feelings or lack thereof.
