What a blessing of God to have such a powerfully talented group. I grew up a huge fan of U2 music, and I couldn't see any better purpose for this song. :)
I have to say, this is embarrassing. I'm a total U2 homer and Christian/Christ-Follower - a Presbyterian to boot. Embarrassing to U2 and certainly embarrassing to a worship service. Did the congregation applause?
Don't get me wrong, U2 will be the worship band of heaven, but of course, it will be U2. =)
In response to goodwindpro. . . what makes something "Christian" anyway?? The word was not originally an adjective. . . it was a descriptive of a Christ follower. . . which, by the way, Bono claims to be. Bono also claims that this song is a worship song. . . so if a song that is written by a Christ-follower for the purpose of worshipping his God isn't considered "Christian". . . I don't know what would be. . . and maybe that label "Christian" should be reevaluated!!
I think it's awesome how church is just like a concert. There's nothing I love more than going somewhere where the worship band imitates all my favorite secular bands. I'm sure God doesn't mind - it doesn't matter what he thinks anyways...
just because a song relates to christianity doesnt make a christian band. Linkin Park has a song that relates to Christianity, does that mean Linkin Park is a christian band. No
Don't listen to the haters. They don't know what they're talking about. & don't let it stop you from doing ANY song you want to in the future. Always remember the saying: those who matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter. :)
just thought i'd point out that Bono has said in interviews that this song was written almost as a worship song. search it on google: song meanings of Magnificent by U2
Okay... Normally you go and search Youtube for a full band cover, and normally they're just downright awful, so you eventually just search for a cover band to see how they can ruin a song... I've changed my mind... This is amazing (for a cover)!!!!!
when some Hillsong conference opened up with Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve, nobody said anythng. The video is here on Youtube, and some Christians didn't even know it was a secular song.
Look, all Im saying is that there is a price to pay for being ultra hip /ecumenical /relevant /emergent. One of the things you give up is spiritual discernment.
As I said before, this song sounds great. In fact I really like the way its done here. But using it in worship is like getting your drinking water from a toilet bowl. Or perhaps getting your sermon notes from a Wicca meeting.
The source DOES matter and U2 is anything but Christian.
I guess I would have to ask your definition of "Christian". I've seen plenty that leads me to believe they hate Christianity. And I haven't seen anything even remotely Pro-Christian in anything they've done (in the past 10 years or so).
And don't say "They pray before their concerts", or "They give money to Africa". Demons also do those things. That's not proof of Christianity. And it's a stretch to find any 'hidden Christian meaning' in any of their songs. I've tried.
"Walk ON". Yeah, it's a good song. But Christian? Come on... No way. Worship? Maybe, but no way is it CHRISTIAN worship.
Look, I LIKE U2. They are one of the greatest bands in Rock history. No Question! But why do we have to "spiritualize" everything? They aren't Christian. They don't claim to be a Christian band. Singing "hallelujah" in the middle of your song doesn't automatically make it a Christian song.
They are good. But why can't we relax and say they are just "Great Rock-N-Roll"?
@goodwinpro . . . what makes something "Christian" anyway?? The word was not originally an adjective. . . it was a descriptive of a Christ follower. . . which, by the way, Bono claims to be. Bono also claims that this song is a worship song. . . so if a song that is written by a Christ-follower for the purpose of worshipping his God isn't considered "Christian". . . I don't know what would be. . . and maybe that label "Christian" should be reevaluated!!
@theboofus423 Actually, Bono is an unashamed and unapologetic narcissist - which is directly and completely incompatible with being a Christ-follower. But regardless, using this song in a church service serves no purpose except to dilute the integrity and potency of corporate worship. It is simply a performance, used as a marketing tool to entice people to go to a cool church. How could anyone say it is anything different?
I do agree though, the label CHRISTIAN should be reevaluated.
If there is no Heaven, no Hell, No nothing after we die. Then everyone has nothing to worry about...NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. Nobody loses. BUT If there IS a Heaven and Hell. Then....the Atheist should be very VERY Afraid....hehehehehe....this is from a business point of view. ;)
This song / composition means a lot to me and I really appreciate it. It really fits in with what I'm going through--This is a great song from the perspective of someone going through major life change that seems weirdly incomprehensible with the Christian religion combined with it's ecumenical or more dichotomous movements. thx.
i have to laugh every time i watch this.. just the idea that this "church" decided to "open up their easter worship" with this song??? yer fuckin brainwashed!!!
Dessie10046-When in planning for the Easter Service we were truly struck by this song specifically because of the spiritual nature of the lyrics and the things Bono was quoted saying about it. In the feature in Rolling Stone for the new album, Bono said that "Magnificent" was entirely inspired by his reading of Mary's Prayer in Luke 1. He later said in a radio interview that its a song about two lovers turning their lives into worship for God. He realizes he was born to sing for his Maker.
If you have proof, it becomes science, not religion. In religion (like most other life issues) the faith becomes important. And faith is slightly (!) go against human senses, since we are grown as "individuals". It is not in our nature to trust anything other than ourselves.
The song Magnificent is my favorite from U2's new CD, and this is a very nice version of it. Thanks for sharing this, and kudos to whoever choose this song to open your Easter worship.
This of all of the needy people who could be fed and clothed with the money this "church" spends on giving teenage U2 cover bands a place to rock out under the spotlights and video coverage. This "church" should be taxed as a business.
I don't normally reply to many YouTube comments, as we try to take a hands-off approach. But I thought your comment deserved a reply.
What you see in this video cost no money (other than normal fixed expenses). All the musicians, vocalists, tech people, etc. that made this happen are all volunteers at Oakbrook. From the guitarists to the sound guys to the camera operators - they're all volunteers. They serve because they love God and want to share their gifts with others. (continued...)
(...continued) Additionally, our budget for the technical support equipment you mention (lights, cameras) is extremely conservative compared to like-size churches. In fact, every "spotlight" you see in the video was donated by a corporation who was throwing them away!
Your assumption that Oakbrook uses money that should be given to the poor and uses it for a "show" is simply not accurate. Oakbrook has several programs to help the hungry and poor, some of which are in progress this very week!
(Sorry for the multiple reply posts, but YouTube has a character limit)
We enable comments on our videos because we want to hear what people have to say - both positive and negative. But we won't allow name-calling, profanity, or stunning inaccuracies about the church. We hope you can understand that.
It's sad to me that one could judge a church's mission based on one video. This 'church' as you refer to it filled a semi-trailer full of food 2 days ago to feed the hungry in our community...45 tons of food to be exact. This 'church' is reaching hundreds of children in our school system that no one else is reaching...this church is about one mission...to know Jesus and to live like Him. As this U2 song proclaims, "We were born to sing for you....to live for you."
i think its cool that the song is used in a spiritual context. bono's lyrics have always borrowed heavily from the scriptures but its only when its put in front of your face that it truly uplifts sometimes. i'm not even a christian (brought up as a muslim), i much prefer to uphold the virtues of secularism rather than religion but things like this are good for the spirit. we are all governed by the same god/energy regardless of how we manifest our beliefs and feelings or lack thereof.
amazing cover, well done lads, you really nailed it, even if the singers voice is a little too high for the song (not his fault i suppose). if the upcoming u2 tour has a version of the song as good as this i will be happy.
Awesome...... One of my favorite U2 songs... Beautiful cover...God Bless, Peace...
