It's certaintly not cheap or free, just because you're blind to it with our smoke and mirrors tax system, doesn't mean you're not paying through the nose for it.

It really shouldn't be the role of government or the people to pay for someone elses health. The National Health Service hemorrhages money needs to be reformed.

If 40% of the nation opted out, tax would be lowered across the board because less people would need public healthcare. Making the NHS more managable for those who do need it.

I think that the 40% who earn over £34,600 pay about 40% to the government in tax. Which in my opinion far too steep. That bracket purchase more taxed goods, which makes up for the difference anyway.

I'm not saying they won't have to pay for the NHS, I'm saying that there will be less tax to pay because overall there will be less people using the services.

Then the government can focus its funding on the smaller portion of the polity who need healthcare but who genuinely can't afford it.

i don't think that's really workable. if 40% opt-out of the nhs then they will, in fairness, not want to pay for it. also it will lead to a large cut in services if less people are useing it leaving tousands stranded for healthcare in rural areas especially. it's better to keep the nhs for all so it is a level playing field and everybody receives the same oppotunity. spending a little less on the armed forces may be a start by pulling out of the fabricated war on terror.

But the people who can afford private care are the ones who use private care at the moment. The only way in which your plan would lower spending is if the threshold was set artificially low so many middle-class are forced to pay for private treatment; worsening their position in favour of the rich. Effectively the middle class would end up paying twice.
