I'm Mexican and I grew up listening, dancing and living the Tango with my grandmother of blessed memory, I would be more than delighted to be able to listen to the beauty of this tango with her; alas I must rejoice with it alone.

~~In the year 1996 my beloved Paz went away, almost six years after Grandpa'. It was only I could understand that it was a tango that saw her live and saw her die and it kills me every time to know that I was not near her to sing her away with Carlito's words. my Paz.

The Jewish immigrants to Buenos Aires in the 1880's, 1890's, 1900's, along with other ethnic minorities, contributed GREATLY to the development & evolution of el "Tango Argentino" with their tearful, heartfelt ballads, their happy klezmers and other E. European musical styles that they brought with them. They disproportionately contributed both in musicianship as well as in authoring lyrics & song of many of the greatest tangos ever written. Unfortunately, many do not know this today.

The version of José Derasner is not a comercial one, but a divertimento of young men. Derasner, my uncle José and a third one whom I do not remember played for fun with the name Trio Gedeon around 1930.

Before the singer starts to sing (another ddifferent lyrics)is used in this tango -La Cumparsita- to make a small "recit resume" of the story: (quite melodramatic) speaking most of all about the abandon as subjet. The man abandon his mother (now dead)to follow a "percanta" young beautifull woman who later abandon him. Bye, best for all.

We are Chileans, and also we were enchanted with this version. It's a strong Argentine accent, along with yiddish, that prevented us to understand it completly.

Like you, we recognized "the cumparsita", a popular tango and many loose words, of yiddish and Spanish.

Entertaining version. I can't make out even one whole sentence (partially because of the heavy Hispanic accent) but from the few words I catch it sounds like a parody of the tango. I'm amazed by the existance of such curiosities! Thanks for presenting them.

The singer does use several words from the Argentinean dialect of Spanish, 'Yiddishized'. Being fluent in both languages myself, I can follow every word of the song with ease.

Yiddish has many German words very similar to my mothertongue Dutch so I'd be able to understand something if sound weren't so muffled, sadly I can't identify one single word.

Koestler's book is not historically accurate. The Ashkenazim are not the decedents of the Khazars. By the time the Khazars converted to Judaism, there was already a sizable Jewish community in Germany -- where Yiddish was born as a Jewish dialect of the local language.

By the time the Khazar kingdom fell, Rabbenu Gershon had written his famous rabbinical rulings in Worms.

The very use of Yiddish shows Koestler was wrong.

Nothing could prevent Khazars mixing with German Jews when the latter arrived in Eastern Europe. Kagan and Kaplan are Turkish words meaning "ancient king" and "tiger".

Wrong on both. Kagan is the Russian pronunciation of "Kohen", meaning a descendant of Aaron, Moses brother. It has been scientifically proven that the kohanim are actual descendants of biblical Aaron.

Less than 5% of Jews today have any Khazar ancestry at all, and that is mostly among Sephardim and Central Asian Karaite Jews. There is no evidence that the survivors of the Khazar kingdom ever made it to Central Europe. Koestler was completely wrong.
