I believe it was actually the Andantes that did the background vocals on the original Mary Wells hit version of this song, not the Supremes. Look it up on Wiki...
@coolsweetgroovy Yes. The Supremes did the harmony vocals on Mary Wells original, more solid version of this song. But, I agree with most. Diana doesn't do a great job of carrying this song. Her vocals are weak. Mary Wislon would have been better suited to do that job. Diana can't always carry a song. Sorry.
@ChakaFanTV That's a good description of how Ms. Ross carries this song. It's not just sugary sweet, it's sappy. Sorry, but Diana can't carry every song she is given. This is the reason why Berry Gordy should have allowed Mary and/or Flo take the lead sometimes. Some songs were just not ment for Ms. Ross. And, this is one of them.
Overall this is really week. The more developed backing vocals are nice but Diana sounds (uncharacteristically) uncommitted here. That and the breakneck tempo trivialize the song. Mary Wells' version was a sensual (for the time) declaration of devotion. This sounds like someone humming to themself on the bus.
I think Mary could have done a nicer job on this (slowed down some) though it might not have different enough from the original to justify doing.
It's simple....if you like the Supremes, you'll like their version of this song. We tend to unfairly compare every note and nuance to the original and so we usually feel the original is better. Had Diana and the Supremes hit with this song first, Mary Wells' version would have sounded odd. Both artists did a great job with the song. My opinion.
@viken51 I don't think the Supremes version of this song would have made it had it been released on them.. It seems shallow compared to Mary Wells for solid version. Sorry. But Diana can't sing anything and have it come out right. I'm with mafdetays. Mary Wilson would have carried this song alot better. And, no, I don't hate Diana Ross.
I think it's "funny" when people get all nasty about Motown covers of Motown songs, which were usually done with the same backing band (The Funk Brothers).
The original was done in 1964, this one not much later. I think Pistol Allen may be the main drummer on this whereas Benny Benjamin did the original... But this version sounds 10 years newer and Jamerson tops himself.
To all the haters, open your damn ears. Singer is personal preference!
Diana's vocal is a little thin here--that's the problem. She could have sung with a little more force. But Wells was an alto--as is Mary Wilson. It would have been better to have Mary's sexy alto on this (to my ears). But this is still fun to hear.
I'm surprised by all the negative comments. I think it's terrific. I love the Mary Wells version, and I don't think they were trying to replace it. The Motown artists all covered each other's songs. Diana's diction is so "supreme" the words by Smokey really pop!
Not that anybody even said anything about this but people need to stop blamin Diana for the break up of the Supremes and stop giving her legacy such criticism . Face it, she was the Justin Timberlake of her time and that was that. Business sadly is business. I love all of the supreme equally as they went their own separate paths. That was all Berry's doing but it's over and done with, I got over it and so should everybody else that still speculates about it.
@iwritethemsongs Actually, that's not true. Flo was thee voice of the group. Watch the story on cable called, "The Unsung Story" of the Supuremes, w/ the interviews from the sigers themselves.
Diana fell into lead....and when she taste the spotlight, she, herself, said that she wanted to stay in it, and...there's too much to type here, but watch the documentary. :)
Diana nicked it from Mary. Supremely better version from Mary. The only reason Diana became lead singer with the Supremes, Florence was a much better lead singer, was that she was knocking off Berry Gordy Jr.
@nelson1eye These girls were young here, so why can't people just enjoy the music. Motown had different artists redo songs. Many BLACK people hate Diana because she was COMMERCIAL in looks, voice, & style which caused the Supremes to be the most successful artist at Motown/60’s. Berry Got it right! When you are considered not black enough, but you take the group to stardom, over someone who is considered more black, then black people have a big problem, even though they did not buy the music.
This song was made to be a soft lead.even the great Whitney sang it honoring Motown and i still prefer Wells version.Like it or not it put motown and Wells on the hit list.laugh or not the other version I favor is Whoopi version in sister act.lol
Mary could not sue for the song She did not write it Smokey did..so that is false. you cant sue for as u did not write. sorry. she could sue for bye bye baby(her first release..but it wasnt a big hit
This - this is classic filler - a track designed to fill the spaces between the hits in albums. Remember Motown didn't take albums seriously until the '70's. Therefore don't be expecting it to kill the Mary Wells original. Even The Supremes wold have known it was a filler when they recorded it - I bet they probably did this in one or two takes.
Motown often recycled tracks and as fillers because it cost less, since Motown owned the rights to the song.
I agree this has Mary Wilson all over it.Remember Eddie Holland wanted mary wilson to lead Where did our love go.again songwriters know who they here singing there songs. Remember the hiot machine left the gates with Diane singing lead.If it had left with Florence or Mary singing lead the outcome would have been different.the supremes had a lot of flops before the hit pay dirt even with Diane singing lead this is a fact .
The book was good it put the finger on Diana. She was definitely jealous of Mary that is why she broke the group up. Until this day I have no respect for Diana because of it. She does not have half the talent Mary Wells has and never will.
Gladys Horton and the Marvelletes were a much better group.
Very true, Mary would have been nice. I could even hear her and Flo sharing it, sort of like a competition between the 3 of them - who has the best guy lol
I think it's great to hear different versions of a well known song - and every singer or group make a good job - I know that My Guy will forever belongs to Mary Wells - and I understand that ;)
