The string is acually used as an instrument. ( very cheap to build) : ) - It shows whether the helicopter is flying straight or not, That is "in line relative" to the front and back of the helicopter
@AussieAviator It's just a comment... and no... i don't know... it's just an opinion... don't cry! A man of your standing acting like a dick! You should be ashamed!
Well, until it is an faa cert. helicopter built in the factory and standardized....I wont fly it. I can respect it and I see alot of them, but I trained in robbies and flight instruct in robbies. It always sounds like it redline rpm when it flies. Nice auto.
I have trained with orv in a r-22. This man is an absolute helicopter genious. I would encourage anyone wanting to fly rotorway to contact him. He has a great web site/ " fly with orv" . A lot of good stories and tips.
That is why we practice autorotations many times during and after flght training. If something happens, the pilot immediately lowers the collective to enter the autorotation and flies the helicopter under full control to a safe landing area, flares, and sets it down. An autorotation is just another form of normal flight procedures for a helicopter.
Good to know that a heli will not just drop like a rock with a system failure, as many fixed wing pilots claim. With skill like this pilot, it's just another flight. Scary, yes, but only if you hear the engine stop and you must do it.
I remember my instructor first explaining the autorotation. And seeing it first hand, inside the cockpit. Still scares the hell out of me, and it's the one move i hope to never have to use.
Orv was my instructor here in CT and he's the best!

It is for determining that the helicopter is flying in trip and not side slipping.

Even with a commercial rotorcraft rating, those 4.5:1 autorotation glide slopes still make my toes curl.

Choppergod you're not , It has an Experimental Certificate, and is registered. Pilots are the weak link. Try one. I like the Turbine powered Exec.
