  • Way to go :)

  • Excuse the noob-ish question... But if you have this outside, doesn't rainwater cause this to over fill and flood out the fish? I would be concerned that rain could cause a bunch of issues? Unless I'm missing something?

  • Nice work John - really appreciate you going to the trouble to share your fantastic creation

  • how many times did you gone ahead?

  • Which pony is more cool - Aqua pony or Air pony?

  • umm that would be a 90degree rotation, not 180.

  • Great system, how did it cost you to setup?

  • cool so is it still working now? are the fish doing well?

  • For every ''ive gone aheads'', do 10 donkey kicks!!

  • @phackqu I've gone ahead and slit my wrists.

  • @phackqu I've gone ahead and slit my wrists.

  • you should use the white RV hoses ...they don't contain toxic plastic or LEAD!.....PLUS THAT GREEN TUB MIGHT NOT BE APPROPRIATE PLASTIC....AND I AM CURIOUS ABout the white container's plastic content, tho i will bet it is potable water quality

  • @iam1inamil The plants can't transfer the plastic into their fruit anyway.

  • @tonyinfinity .....i wouldn't be so sure about plastic content....plastic has been proven to have similiarities to hormones,it is a hormone "mimic".....and all garden hoses have lead content in the plastic/rubber

  • @iam1inamil This is something I was just thinking. On a slight different idea, how would it work to either craft it out of thick glass, OR if you had access to the resources, using Hemp instead to create that container, instead of plastic. One should be able to mimic the system, but without the hormones.

  • Short and sweet. Thanks. You actually turned the top tray 90 degrees, not 180, allowing room for drainage.

  • I'm not understanding the auto siphon loop? Can you detail taht a bit more.

  • Any chance you could elaborate on the Bacteria portion of the cycle?? Are they in the Reservoir? A little more detail would be great.

  • are you sure there isn't something you forgot to tell us you had gone ahead and done?

  • What do you think about using the store bought fish food? They are filled with artificial colors and preservatives . . . I have a worm compost and was wondering about feeding the fish worms . . . its free if you are breeding the worms AND you get great compost/fertilizer.

  • @sarahbe1 ...i saw a aquaponics site that has non gmo fish for sale....anybody concerned about having good food should try to get all non gmo vegs and meats....don't know what gmo is?...look it up, its freaky what [mostly america] is being allowed to be dna altered....spread the word ...these gmo's will make all "normal " foods die off because MONSANTO has developed plants to resist the herbicides that will kill everything but the monsanto plants.......we are talking extinction of known veggies!

  • Do you go into detail in another video? You may think you showed us how to build one but it was all in your mind.

  • Is there a difference between Hydroponics and Aquaponics? If so, what is it?

  • Nice one! since setting up have you stirred your gravel in fish tank? Not many fish care if there is gravel unless breeding.

  • I have gone ahead and enjoyed this.

  • @eocahill ..rarely do i comment or thumbs up,, ^^^made me lol

  • You know what would be more amazing? Use solar cells to power your pump! That way you'd be totally off the grid!! Great Video by the way!! Very Impressive!

  • Grows You Up To 10 Times The Plants Build your own aquaponics With this You will have step by step quality instructions in making your own aquaponics.

  • marihuana

  • Can I get by with 9 inches deep media bed?

  • Awesome.

  • good but you are supposed to use fish like tilapia not goldfish

  • dude i love it, but why don't people put fish you can eat in there like catfish or bluegill ???

  • Have U grown plants in the gravel?

  • do u eat the fish too?

  • @50kT Yeah that's the best part, you grow your plants and when the fish are big enough you can harvest them as well and start over. You could get entire meals from this system.

  • thank you....

  • Thanks for creating this video

  • How did you grow the algae? By just leaving that water in the pool for a couple weeks??

  • I thought the idea was to raise fish to eat as well as vegetables. Anyway I am going to use Tilapia for the fish. I will feed them algae pellets I also grow. I need to get more detail on the system layout.

  • How do your cherry tomatoes taste? Is there a noticeable difference in flavor due to the growing without having a soil substrate?

    Thanks for the nice video!

  • Together with The Zeitgeist Movement we can make this happen!

Have a look at Zeitgeist Moving Forward!

We need to change and work together :-D

  • Very cool! How big is your water pump?

    Majors Earthbag Builder

  • Thanks for sharing. Very informative.

  • Holy Cow! That's a heck of a lot of work! Instead of building that eyesore, you should have got a job at McDonald's or Piggly Wiggly and bought groceries and beer for a year! That thing can't grow beer, can it? How do you live without beer?

  • do you use a timer in your reservior?

  • beautifull video - utile!! grazie

  • My school is working on an aquaponics project. come check us out watch?v=cRMaxHTR7Dw

  • cool !

im going to raise comet goldfish to sell in these if i can.

  • AWESOME, I just picked up two IBC containers just like yours, I don't think I want to cut it up like you did but, I now have 3 bluegill in the tanks swimming around, with a bubbler going, I have my bilge pump on order and should see it soon I am so excited this is coming together!. Thanks for showing me it can be done.

  • @marthale7 Where did you find ibc container's? how much? I found some white barrel's but, worried what were in them prior (i will take this guy's advice and use alge to clean them up)

  • Hi, I think it's very cool that you made this video to explain, thx! In the beginning you go very slow and explain each step, but at the end you kinda lost me. What are all those cables (it seems like the resevoir is hooked to batterycables). How do you pomp around the water? and there seems to be a a large tube outside with addititional plants, but you didn't show it very clearly. I'm really a lay person at this and would like to know more. Also: did the tomatoes and peppers taste nice? thx!

  • im in the second year of a class at my school that teaches us this very thing. im lucky becouse its one of the only in the country.

  • ive gone ahead and gave you a thumbs up.

  • excelent video, thanks for uploading!

  • Can you give details about the planting medium for the vegtables?

  • You didn't happen to mention anything about the bacteria. Did you have to inoculate the water with something or are you just depending on the bacteria you need to grow by itself without getting it jumpstarted? How do you know you have the right balance? Do you test the pH on a regular basis? Where did you happen to find the container? That's a pretty cool setup. I'd like to try that out for myself one of these days! Thanks for sharing! :)

  • hmm ... keep videos coming..

  • I am testing a small aquaponic system and I have some questions than need to be answerd..

I am testing it currently in my home yard and I will move in to a larger size {green house}.

    And here is the questions

1, how can I know the amount of fish that I need per "Lettuce. like for an example if I have 1,000 lettuce, how many fish do I need?

2, in my aquarium I got talapia fish, can I know what food should I give it?

  • I plan to deploy Aquaponics on my indoor fish farm as a means to filter out ammonia from the fish water. I deploy big fish tanks of 40 m3 of water each. I need to calculate the optimum plant population as well as hydroton quantity to achieve perfect filtering of this water quantity. Is there a proven analogy (i.e., plant population and/or hydroton quantity to fish water quantity) that ensures a well-balanced nitrogen cycle? Your assistance would be invaluable.

  • do you need to add phosphorus to the solution to grow tomatoes?

  • Hi there just came across this great idea and I think i wanna try it. Ive read some of the comments. I just have just two questions: How is the energy consumption? along with this question is if you need to turn on the pump all day 24/7? I woul appreciate your answer based on your experience. Once again thank you.

  • That's really good information, but I still have a question. Do we need nutrients or compost in the planting cups or not? If not how do plants grow? Thank you.

  • Beware of bill S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010! If accepted [S 510] would preclude the publics right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes! Your aquaponics system will become illegal!

  • I've seen videos where they grow the fish feed in the top container. Something you should consider trying. I liked your video a lot. Gave it a thumbs up.

Then only other addition would probably be a solar pump. making it completely self sustainable.

  • very cool. where did you get that awesome container?

  • Thanks

  • Cool video and nice system. Love your improv. One question for ya involving flood/drain systems. Is their an advantage to a reservoir system over a timed pump?

  • Thank you for shairing this video with us.

Whats the best advice for someone wanting to get started with Aquaponics? Is there a site where I can learn more that you could refer me to or some books?

  • that is a cool setup, i will definitely look into that more.

    cheers.

  • Take care and have a good day.

  • excellent!

  • Thank You

  • I've gone ahead and left a comment.

    kidding, sweet setup!

  • Thanks

  • expect a lot more hits after the nytimes article

  • Thanks for the heads up.

  • Don't you have to add other nutrients to the water for the plants? If so, what? If not, then why not? Thanks.

  • great questions. It depends on your system. In general some people will add chelated Iron to their system because the system lacks this. You might also add some trace elements that are not produced by the fish or the system itself. I use a product sold in fish stores that is used for providing plants with trace elements. This seem to be enough and I add it once every month. Hope this helps.

    John

  • Growing algae does NOT prove that the container is safe for food. Algae will grow in toxic environments (see any polluted stream). Saving $100 is unwise when you consider the toxicity of dioxins, etc how long the system will be in operation and how much time you will put into building it. If you can't afford a food-grade tote then make a "barrelponic" system from some food-grade barrels, they can be found for around $15 each. A split barrel makes ~ 12 sq ft of growbed, a tote is ~16 sq ft.

  • great work! of all the videos i've seen so far yours was probably the easiest to follow, if you can recommend any good texts i'd be grateful

  • Why do you need a reservoir? Would it be possible to drip directly into the grow bed? Then once it's full, drain into the fish tank? Use a flood and drain technique utilizing a Bell Siphon. Feed back would be appreciated.

  • You don't need a reservoir. You're right you could drip directly into the grow bed and drain it back into the fish tank. The beauty of aquaponics is that there are many way to achieve the same out come. Thanks for the heads up. Take care and have a good day.

  • Where may i get these 275 gallon liquid storage container?

  • love it...you have inspired me to build this. Good man,

  • Thanks

  • nice job. I am having trouble finding one of those liquid storage containers

  • I picked up the container from a buisness that uses thme in their day -to-day operations. I stopped by and asked what they did with the empty one's and the said nothing because it was to expensive to ship them back to the company to get them refilled. So, I asked if I could have one and the said yes. Thats how I came about mine. I live in the city so traveling around the industrial district lead me to this company. Good luck!

    John

  • cool!

  • Thxs

  • in aqauponics i don't understand is if you leave the water running 24/7 or it's timed to pump the water to the plants once in a while because i feel if i leave them 24/7 they will drown

  • I use a timer to pump the water once a day, but there are systems that pump the water 24/7. These systems are deep water cirulation or NFT (nutrien film technique). If you goto the virgin Islands aquaponics web page you can see the deep water cirulation also check out barelponics web site, it has alot of information.

  • Once the oxygen level IN the water is high enough the plants will not drown. constantly moving means its constantly being aerated.

  • very nicce

  • Thanks

  • That's really awesome! Where do you get the container, and about how much did it cost you? I might want to do this as a second aquaponics setup with some catfish!

    John

  • Thank you so much. I've found them by where I live on sale for a little over $150 but am keeping an eye out for a free one. That's a great tip. Thanks so much for the video and the reply, I really appreciate it.

  • Could you use edible fish, preferably trout? Would they be safe to eat in such a contained environment?

  • Yes you can use edible fish. Most people running aquaponic systems are using Tilapia. If you wanted to raise trout then you would have to use colder water and then use plants that grow well with cooler water. For example some kinds of lettuse and other cold weather vegitables. These fish eat what you feed them so all natural means all natural fish.

  • Random note- there's also some people using shrimp. You can get shrimp fry from a company in Fort Worth.

  • nice experiment in sustainability

  • fantastic..............how may times an hour are you turning the system over.

ebb and flow at what intervles. on the long trem what are you wtr. peramiters like amo, trite, trate ect.......how bio. stable is it the way you set iut up.

this vid points out the fact that such bio tech's. are one the fundimental stepping stones to mars....... hope that dident snd. to wierd.

    thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for your intersest. The system cycles about 1 1/2 to 2 times daily. If you go to the barrel ponics web stie you sill see how stable his system is and I just modified it a little to use something I had at my disposal. Thanks again for your question please feel free to ask more. Take care and have a wonderful day.

  • thank you!...........your set up rules

  • I'm sorry if my question is too ignorant, can you eat those goldfish?

  • Maybe? Gold fish are used in my system because the where free. You can use other fish that would be better eating.

    John

  • You use more electricity then the yield. More lost then gain =0

  • I don't have the numbers to show one way or another

  • coupla solar panels would drive that pump most of the day.

  • o thats why we dont have commercial systems

  • There are a number of very successful aquaponic farms. Look up Speraneo Aquaponics.

  • Have you considered putting in a fish that feeds on algae, such as Tilapia, so you don't have to feed them?

Also, does this seem seem to never require cleaning?

    Thanks.

  • Great question, I have thought about this, but in the current climate that I am living in tilapia would nead a water heater and that would cost me to much. Even though I am using goldfish I could still grow duck weed and convert them over to that diet. Trust me I would love to do a few more things. If you have any further questions please feel free to e-mail anytime. Thanks John

  • thanks for the idea i put 1 up in egypt cairo look at aquaponics in eypt

  • fascinating! i want to try but my skills at building puting together are just awful.i would need stupid proof instructions.

  • I wish I could help you out there. If there are any particular questions you need help with please don't hesitate to ask.

    John

  • Check out Padikksons channel. He has a single barrel system that Is real easy to build. I just finished one yesterday! Took me about half a day after having procured all components.

  • Thanks for the heads up. Good luck and growing to you. Let me know how things are going.

    John

  • I have a question do you use electrical pump or what is this self-siphon? How does this self-siphon work? Do you have a plan about the self-siphon or site? Also what the main use of reservoir for? Isn't the plant use 24/7 running water like hydroponic?

  • These are great questions. To start I do not have a plan for siphon, but if you look at some of the other questions on this page I have answered the question on how it works. The pump is running 24/7 what this helps with is airation of the system and it will suply the reservoir with enough water for the grow bed to recieve a cycle for the ebb and flow consept which helps with oxegen to the roots. The self-starting siphone was used so there were no other moving part. Hope this helps.

    John

  • This system uses pea gravel because it a cheap medium to use. I would strat my seed first in a green house or somewhere else and them transplant them into your aquaponics system.

    John

  • How do you grow the algae before hand?

  • All I did was find some algae from a small pond or large pudle. With that I was able to see if it grew or died. It grew, so with that I started to add gravel and fish and plants. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. Take care and have a wonderful day.

    J

  • hey john cool vid but i have a question. how can i make my own reservoir and how does it works?

  • Good Question, you can make a reservoir out of many things. I had this around in the garage and it looked good. If you visit the barrel ponics website you can download the manual and travis go's over all of those kinds a questions. If you have any further questions please feel free to e-mail me.

    John

  • thnx alot

  • Thank you. It's very helpful.

  • Could you explain how you made 3 cuts? Seems like you would have one piece with a giant hole in it. Do you have any other videos or pictures detailing the cuts?

  • I made the 2 cuts by using a circluar saw. You are right I did end up with a piece that had a giant hole. This was so I could get my hand down into the fish tank. If you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail me. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

    John

  • Thank you for that great video! I have the same container and will making a system using your video.

  • Thanks

  • Hey aquaponic, cool vid, but I have a question. If the Fish help the plants, what do the plants do for the fish?

  • Thanks. The plants are the living filter. That take in the the nutrients returning the water to the fish tank cleaner and more oxegenated. So, to make everything work you need the plants for the fish and the fish for the plants. Take care and have a wonderful day.

    John

  • HI John, that was my 12 year old asking.... really awesome way to grow! Thanks so much. Have a great holiday.

  • How did you get your plumbing to work to do the ebb and flow to drain the reservoir?

  • The self-siphoning system works because you are reducing the interior diameter of the PVC pipe in the reservoir from 2" to 1/2" pipe on the outside of the reservoir. By reducing the PVC down in size, water that is overflowing from the 2" starts to back up in the 1/2" pipe because it is smaller. This is what cause the siphone to start, which in turn drains the reservoir completing an ebb and flow. Hope this helps a little.

  • Thanks for the video

  • You're Welcome.

  • Nice video. Would it be possible for you to give us a detailed drwaing of the self-siphoning system?

  • The self-siphoning system works because you are reducing down the diameter of the PVC pipe from 2" to 1/2". By reducing the PVC down in size, water that is overflowing from the 2" starts to back up in the 1/2" pipe because it is smaller. This is what cause the siphone to start. Hope this helps a little.

    John

  • I still don't understand how this self siphoning system can empty all the water from the reservoir judging by the angle of the PVC interior pipe. Can you post us the siphoning in action please? Thanks.

  • You have a good question. I don't empty everything out of the reservoir because I have adjusted it so I don't over flow my grow bed. I'll see if I can put together something to make it little easier to understand. Please visit the site for barrel ponics and look at his reservoir system. Take care and have a good day.

    John

  • I am very new to this and was wondering about your comment `self syphoning' and also what happens to the water that doesn't go into the green holding tank on top. Also is there a critical amount of depth of water in the growing bed and in the fish tank?

  • First lets talk about the self syphoning: There is a reduction in pipe diameter from the green reservoir to the grow bed from 2" pipe to 1/2" pipe, this inturn chokes the water and starts the syphoning process.

Second water that does not go into the green reservoir goes back to the fish tank to for circulating.

Third, depth in the grow bed is determined by how much water goes into the grow bed and how fast it is returned to back to the fish tank.

Thanks and e-mail if any more questions.

  • Which food industry is using that beautiful type of container? May i ask where you buy it and how much did you pay for it? I live in Costa Rica so any tips are welcome!

  • Many different industries use these types of containers. The container I used was used to store a mold inhibitor that was sprayed on to corn and then feed to cows (and then we eat it...great!), but you can find them online under (I think) 1000L square plasctic storage containers. If you go to Barrel Ponic you might see that other containers wook just as well. Thanks for the comments and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. Take care and have a good day.

    John

  • I have not checked out their web sit, so thanks for the heads up and your comment as well. Take care and happy planting.

  • nice job on the video, I added it to my aquaponics section of my sustainable living forum. I sent you an email about it and the forum URL

  • Thanks for your coments. I'll go and check it out. Take care and have a wonderful day.

    John

  • Nice setup! I think the aquaponic systems have a hard time producing tomatoes, peppers, and other fruiting plants. The fish dont provide enough nutrients.

  • People have thought that only green leafy vegies can be grown, but this is not true. If you pump all your fish waste into the grow beds, then even fruiting plants can grow. If you go to the barrelponics web site you will see that he has grown everything you can think of. Check out his papayas. Take care and have a good day.

  • it weems like everyone is using fish but one person I saw using compost water from his worm farm. Does it have to be fish to be a true AQUAponic farm? Cuz if the worms work I think I would prefer that method

  • Good Question? Aquaponics is made up of 2 words Aquaculture and Hydroponics. So, most people use fish for aquaponics, but if someone is useing something different thats great. There are many possibilities if you figure out away for your plants and whatever else you use to live in a symbiotic relationship. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

    John

  • I guess you are suggesting Vermiponics - catchy - go for it!

  • Nice, helpful video. I want to become more "self-sustaining" via a garden like this. Thanks for posting.

  • You can be more "self-sustaining" and there is alot of information out there. This was my first try and I'm excited for the spring.

Take care and have a wonderful day.

  • Real neat video. That is awesome. Really good idea with the container. It does not seem that the plants produced that much. It because they had a late start? oh, what did you feed the fish?

  • Nattoro-

Thanks for your comment and checking out my sytem. The plants were started in july and didn't really get going. This system is also located near the Mountains and there were many cloudy days. This was my first try with Aquaponics and I can't wait until this spring. Take care.
