First of all,Tchaikovsky is about EMOTION.To play his pieces the right /and notable/ way,one must have the soul of a little child,of a grown up man and a passionate woman all in one. And not just show technique.
Colorless orchestra,over-speeding soloist and conductor, tasteless approach to this exceptionally emotional concerto. That's what this performance is.
In my opinion, the Gilels/Maazel and the Gilels/Kondrashin recordings are by far the best, although some may criticize Mazel for being slow
I think it interesting how the conductor is all over the place but the pianist is very light and composed in his playing. Wonderful piece! Wish I could here the rest.
@MrYou2ber No, but they sure beat the crap out of Op. 23 again, didn't they? Pletnev won the Tchaikovsky Competition VI. I don't know what his final round performance was, but I know that in the course of the Compeition he did play the Second Concerto. (I graduated from U-Michigan right at that time, but other than a piano score of the Second that I couldn't affford, I knew nothing of the work, LOL.)
@pitschi2001 Agree completely; the First has its charm but I've never understood why #1 was so much more popular than the Second. The G concerto is MUCH better in melody, harmony, orchestration, musical developments, pianistic "style," and yes, pure bombast too... I don't care all that much for this performance, it's very rushed at the end, but the Pletnev-Fedoseyev CD done right about the same time is *definitive* of hte Tchaikovsky Second.
I completely love this Piano Concerto. It has a mix of so many qualities, just unbelievable. If you would like to listen to another great composer YouTube the Great Great Grandfather in Composition of Peter I. Tchaikovsky:
This is an outstanding performance. if you'd like to see a young pianist's performance of Tchaikovsky 2, who is a pupil of Sergei Babayan (who studied in Russia with Pletnev) go to Richterkleiber's channel. For someone who was just 24 at the time of his performance it was astounding!
All the best playing, of late, seems to be coming from Russia. This guy is phenomenal. I've also gotten into Konstantin Scerbakov, lately, though it seems most of his albums have suddenly and inexplicably been removed from iTunes...
@ciliaspippi It is a sad commentary on the rigidity of social discourse that you would even imagine that a comment on Russias' turmoil would be construed as racist. It is a statement of fact and in no way racist or demeaning of Russia. Never apologise for truth and never mind the small minded dictates of 'political correctness'.
Incredible playing - he plays with such lyricism. Reminds me a lot of Byron Janis years ago. Lang Lang (Bang Bang)should take many lessons from Pletnev.

Best music ever. I have tears in my eyes as I am listening to this piece

G major is a key so associated with classical, I thought it funny that Tchaikovsky would choose such an uncommon key for his style.

I know the Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 2 in G major. Mikhail Pletnev plays it in a brilliant, unique way. He is indeed an awesome discovery.

I think it's the moscow and st Petersburg conservatories, those places are amazing. It is a shame that so much of Russia is in such a turmoil.
And before all you haters start commenting on my racism, I am Russian, and lived there.
