We can use some high speed rail in Australia. No I don't want to take a 4-5 day trip on the tourist train "The Ghan" just to get from one end of the country to the other. It's not the Tran-Siberian Railway we're traveling!
I wish Canada would stop wasting taxpayers dollars on these constant studies. They dont get us any closer to what this country needs. Use the money on building the actual train.
It's never going to happen because people don't vote. Half of the country just sit at home waiting for things to automatically happen for them. Canada always ends up with a federal government that doesn't want to do anything real and useful. If you want high speed rail, get out and vote for it!
@DannyandPatty why? Passenger rail costs and absurd amount of capital. The only way to get that money together is with govt subsidies, and that in turn means the railway becomes a public company, meaning it wont be competitive. Instead, itll be like Canada post; slow, expensive and also subsidized, poor customer service and an "if you dont like it what are you gonna do?" attitude...
If high speed rail were popular and in demand enough to actually show a profit, wed already have it.
@QCprepper Toronto to Montreal exceeds densities in Europe of places with HSR. The current study says the investment can be recouped in as little as 15 years. After that its massive profit ($1b+ a year) for the government. We're the only G8 country in the world without HSR or plans to build it. Our country was founded on rail and its embarrassing we've forgotten that.
@jigglysquishy If the costs could be recouped in 15 years, why havent any private corporations gotten in on it? they could make a killing. they havent because:
1) We stopped using rail; cars and trucks are cheaper, faster and more pleasant. theres no demand. If there were, VIA wouldnt have a monopoly.
2) the upfront capital is massive.
3) Greenies and vested interest will litigate against the project because they dont want the tracks in their swamp/backyard
@QCprepper That and you'd have three governments wanting to regulate it to death. The Federal government, along with the Provincial Governments of both provinces. They'd all want capital from it, and try and delay it even further by launching independent rail studies in addition to this one. Hence why private companies primarily hate investing in inter-provincial programs.
Although if they do like Britain and buy modified Shinkansen trains from Japan, you'll find people choosing rail over road.
@QCprepper Cause GO transit totally isn't public. They have good Customer Service, and are reasonably priced. Canada could do with a High Speed Rail, even if it is public.
@lightdark99 Whos GO? Here in Quebec we have VIA rail. They cannot afford their own tracks and lease them from CN and CP. Although the customer service isnt bad, delays and late arrivals and departures are very common. the end result is that although its true i save the aggravation of driving, the price isnt much of a saving vs my car, and although admittedly i dont use VIA that often if yet to leave on-time and arrive on-time.
@QCprepper GO Transit . Government of Ontario Transit Authority. Go Transit runs trains, buses & etc........ in the Toronto & the Greater Toronto Area
@QCprepper GO is the Southern Ontario Commuter-rail train company. Prices for a ticket range from $4 to $12 depending on where you're going. Just saying that I'd be in Montreal far more often if there was a high-speed train to go there.
It's so true... The Canadian governments in general never get around to making big changes or implementing great ideas. They'll spend millions on a study and consultants, then forget about it for ten years. If anyone actually gets as far as setting aside funds for a project, the next election occurs and some new guy comes in and ends it before it can begin.

As a Frenchman in the core of the most dense and used railway network in Europe, I strongly recommend to any country high-speed rail.

Sadly, that's the Canadian mentality; talk endlessly about doing something great, but do nothing about it.
