Diffenderfer was on the beach and Greg Noll took a wipeout. Someone yelled the classic Japanese warcry "Banzai!" At the same time they were doing roadwork on the nearby Ke Nui Road and there was a sign that said "PIPELINE." Diffenderfer put the two together and its stayed Banzai Pipeline.

*This is true and was even in a pipeline documentary

Even though Teahupoo hasn't killed as many people, it's most likely alot more dangerous than pipe. Think about it, the reef is about four feet underwater at both breaks, except that teahupoo's wave is a fuckin thick slab. Pipeline is pussy shit compared to that.

shamanjon -what a bunch of shit. pkaalekahi is right, Phil Edwards and Mike Diffenderfer went there in 1961 when there was a construction project on an underground pipeline on Kamehameha Highway. Diffenderfer made the suggestion to name it Pipeline. You don't have to walk over a pipe nowadays and I don't know if you ever had to but that's where the name comes from. Jeez
