Death Magnetic was released 2008 (you said 2009). Still, considering there was 5 years between garage inc and st anger, and between st anger and DM, 3 years is pretty quick yes.

I'm a big metallica-fan, not a lou reed fan though (yes i have listened to his solo-songs). to be honest, i think the album isn't gonna be that great, but still hey - its metallica! :D
