I agree with you that it was an impressive tornado and probably the most photogenic storm of the year. I actually read on a NWS website some of the wind speeds for the Minnesota and Yazoo City tornados were in the 170 to 185 mph range so I believe it may be assumed they were equally strong as Bowdle. I'll try to find statistics on the Bowdle storm.

Easily the strongest tornado of 2010. Had it hit a more populated area, it would have received an EF-5 rating for sure. This was a monster.

@jw870206 Rated an EF-4, There was plenty of vehicles in the area with equipment , did anyone get a measurement on the winds? Yazoo City was just as impressive. The tornadoes in Minnesota were also equally impressive and they were all rated EF-4. How can you be certain this would have been an EF5 unless someone was able to obtain wind readings over 200mph ?

@GOODY61 Well, there are no measurements that put it at EF-5; so, my argument is merely speculation. However, the motion at the cloud base and with the entire funnel is some of the most amazing motion I have seen with a tornado.

But if you read my comment you'll find that wasn't my point. I said that a huge tornado doesn't have to be an EF5, not that an EF5 doesn't have to be huge.

There have been a number of huge tornadoes this year. Not a single one of them has been rated EF5.

Ah, the envy I feel for these stormchasers... It's a dream to get that close to those beautiful specimens of nature's wrath. The damage those twisters must have caused makes me shudder. I'm almost saddened by the fact that where I live is too far north to truly be considered "Tornado Alley". I'd move south just to be closer to this.
